{"title":"SEEKING THE MARKS OF KNITTING WITHIN THE HISTORY: NALBINDING","authors":"","doi":"10.7816/idil-10-87-02","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.7816/idil-10-87-02","url":null,"abstract":"Being a textile surface formation method basing on binding and passing the loops prepared separately with an assistant such as crochet needle, knitting needle or shuttle and coming from the ball through one another, weft knitted fabric’s development process within the history has mostly been associated with hand-knit started with knitting needles. Together with this, scientific examinations and dating methods conducted on the needles and breadths brought out in the archaeological digs carried out world-wide proves that the commencement of hand-knit within the history dates back older times. The findings came up in archaeological digs show that knitting began with world-widely known nalbinding technique or single needle knitting. Nalbinding is based on binding the loops formed with needle and thread to one another in the form of a cyclic hoop within themselves. Although nalbinding is expressed in several Turkish resources related to knitting, it is an old technique that is not commonly used. This technique used in Northern Europe shows similarity with shuttled knitting, fishnet knitting, point lace techniques commonly known in Anatolia and in terms of formation of surface with thread hoop and usage of single thread carrier. Even though nalbinding technique is not common in Anatolia, the fact that some needles thought to have been used as knitting needle were found in the recent archaeological digs (Başur Höyük–Siirt, Körtik Tepe-Diyarbakır) makes us consider that the history of knitting dates back to 11.000 BC in these lands and knitting technique made by using knitting needle might have been used in Anatolia. Besides this, there is not an assessment on whether nalbinding was used in Turkey or not. It is observed that there is an increasing interest in nalbinding technique, which is used for gloves, socks and knit cap around the world since 1970s. Revival of this technique in Scandinavian countries is in question. For that reason, this research was designed for the ones showing interest to textile design techniques as a collection to introduce the history and technique of nalbinding technique, and its needles over knitting needles found out in recent archaeological digs conducted in Turkey and around the world. {"title":"SEMIOTIC ANALYSIS OF SOCIAL POSTERS ON CIGARETTE ADDICTION","authors":"","doi":"10.7816/idil-10-87-04","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.7816/idil-10-87-04","url":null,"abstract":"Cigarette, which has 1.1 billion users globally, constitutes an important social health problem in Turkey and in the world and continues to find new addicts day by day. Worldwide, one person dies from smoking-related diseases every 4.5 seconds. In addition, more than 600,000 non-smokers die each year due to passive smoking. Many levels of government and non-governmental organizations carry out various studies and seek new methods to find a solution to this global problem. One of these methods is public service announcements and posters with social content, which are an important mass media tool. Social posters, which transform various persuasion methods into visual codes, are effective in raising awareness in societies with their striking and informative features in the context of health communication. Since posters with social content convey many implicit meanings with the literary and visual indicators they contain, the semiotic method is of great importance in the analysis of these meanings. In this research, samples of anti-smoking posters with social content, in which visual codes are intense, were examined and the connotations of the indicators in these posters were revealed. As a result of the examinations, it has been observed that fear-based persuasion methods are generally used in preventing smoking addiction and creating behavior change. As a result, it has been seen that the examined posters have many deep meanings that are overlooked at first glance. {"title":"EVALUATING THE ROLE OF PINTEREST IN EDUCATION AND THE PROFESSION OF INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE","authors":"S. Parallel to the increased use of Pinterest among designers and students, there is concern about pros and cons of this platform for education and profession of interior architecture. This study aimed to understand if interior architecture instructors, students and professional are engaged with Pinterest and how they evaluate the role of this platform for the profession and education of interior architecture. Accordingly, this study offers a theoretical framework that would underline the opportunities and threats of using Pinterest as a designer. In this scope, data was collected from 225 students, 30 instructors and 50 interior architects. Comparing the findings showed that while most of the students and instructors find Pinterest useful for education of interior architecture, the number of interior architects who believed Pinterest presented disadvantages for the profession of interior architecture were higher that those who found Pinterest useful. Results claim that educating both students and instructors about the dynamic role of the social media in transferring the teaching materials, collaborative learning and efficient academic interaction could enhance the integration of online media development and education. Findings from this study contribute to the existing literature on the role of social media on design-oriented education and professions. In the research, it is aimed to examine the studies on individuals with special needs and music education conducted between the years 2000-2020 in Turkey. For this purpose, the distribution of studies according to publication year, publication type, university, journal in which they were published, subject area, type of disability, sample level, number of samples, research method, data collection tools and data analysis method were analyzed. The research group of the study consists of 27 articles, 27 master's theses and 4 doctoral theses, which were scanned with YOK National Thesis Center and Google Scholar on individuals with special needs and music education. Therefore, the contents of 58 studies included in the research were examined according to year, publication type, university, journal, subject, type of disability, sample group/number, research method, data collection tool and data analysis methods. The research is considered important in that the content analysis of the studies on individuals with special needs and music education gives an idea about the methods, data analysis, sample group that they will use for the researchers who want to work in this field in the future, and that there are few similar studies done in the field. The findings obtained from the research were arranged according to sub-problems and presented descriptively as frequency and percentage tables. In the research, the most studies on the subject were conducted in 2011 and 2016, these studies were published as articles and master's thesis, the most postgraduate thesis was published in Gazi University, the article was published in the Journal of the Faculty of Education of Abant İzzet Baysal University, most of the studies were conducted for mainstreaming students, and the most The results were obtained as many quantitative data analysis methods were preferred. In this context, in this research designed as a qualitative study, the information obtained from the literature review in Turkish and English about the composer's life, style and works were compiled by making descriptive analysis. As a result of the research; Although Ernest Bloch was born in Switzerland, he is known as an American composer because he spent the most productive years of his artistic life in America, he consciously used Jewish cultural elements in his music and thought that a composer should not be independent of his own roots, that he was a good music educator besides his composing. It has been seen that he has articles on education, in addition to the influence of his national identity in music style, he uses descriptiveness as a harmonic language, he uses various styles such as tonal sets, serial and modal harmony, the use of harmony with percussion, and he uses independent forms as a form style, being aware of the traditional. It is thought that this study will be a source for other studies about Ernest Bloch, since no other source can be found in Turkish about the composer. The 1950s was a period of intense creativity in jazz, defined by emerging styles such as third stream, cool jazz and hard bop. The end of that decade, 1959, is considered to be a watershed year in which some of jazz’s most influential recordings were made and also effected the free jazz movement, which dominated until 1967, known as the \"year that jazz music died\". Therefore, 1959 becomes a bridge between the stylistic homogeneity of first half of the century and an outpouring of creativity in the second half. The echoes of the pre-fusion period 1959-1967 are still influential on the musical output of jazz in the twenty first century. This study aims to convey the variety of jazz styles between 1950 and 1967 by looking at the foundational elements that create the musical understanding of these styles by means of a descriptive methodology. A single group pre-test-post-test design was used in the study, which was carried out in a trial model and in which quantitative data were collected. The study group consisted of a total of 6 cello students studying at Karabük University Safranbolu Fethi Toker Fine Arts and Design Faculty Music Department in the 2020-2021 academic year. “Cello Knowledge Test” and “Rubric” were used as data collection tools. Single group (uncontrolled) pre test-post test data were analyzed with Wilcoxon and Friedman tests, which are non-parametric methods that are used to compare data that do not show normal distribution. According to the quantitative findings, it was observed that the scores obtained from the knowledge test and the rubric, As a result of the research, it is suggested that the potential of problem-based learning should be investigated further by music educators and researchers should apply the problem-based learning model in distance or face-to-face education with different scenarios and different materials. These values, which determine the lifestyle of a nation, people and society, have been passed down from generation to generation. The unique life models, art, morality, laws and order of the society determine the culture of that society and shape the daily lives of the people who make up the society. When the social structure and life of different nations are examined, it is noteworthy that the cultures differ significantly and diverge from each other. While human beings adapt to all kinds of changes with the instinct of survival, they consciously or unconsciously keep pace with their social life in order to continue their social life within the changing cultural structure. Fikret Mualla, a Turkish painter, was born in 1903, until his mid-thirties naturally lived and produced works by being influenced by Turkish culture and society. Although he went abroad for a short time many times during this period, he went to Paris in 1939 and lived there for twenty-six years. During this long period, his art, like himself, was influenced by the culture he lived in, and he reflected the daily life in Paris and artistic expression forms on his works. Cafes, circuses and streets in Paris have become the main subject of the artist's works. To analyze the effects of contemporary life in the context of cultural change through artists and works of art; It is aimed to contribute to the relevant literature by examining the changes brought by the French culture and life in Fikret Mualla's works. In addition, it is aimed to examine how the cultural difference affects the works of the artist in question in terms of subject and technique.
