Current treatment systems in many countries have presented a serious socioeconomic situation for low- to middle-income countries. As such, monitoring mechanisms present a clinical need for effective diagnosis, prevention and treatment of numerous non communicable diseases, such as CKD. Non-invasive, continuous monitoring of renal function using a complementary split ring resonator (CSRR) microwave sensor confers potential benefits to meeting this clinical need. The sensor was sensitive to changes in the relative permittivity of a material under test with the electrical properties of blood, for the frequency range investigated in COMSOL Multiphysics®. The correlation of the electrical parameters with relative permittivity changes highlights the applicability of CSRRs as a sensor module for CKD monitoring.","PeriodicalId":253379,"journal":{"name":"2016 Loughborough Antennas & Propagation Conference (LAPC)","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123409138","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our approach allows for fast assessment of compact antenna performance by identifying the best possible trade-offs between the antenna size and its reflection responses. Analysis of such Pareto-optimal designs obtained for various antenna topologies allows for their fair comparison, particularly in terms of the minimum size they can be designed for (assuming acceptable reflection response levels) or the best attainable reflection characteristics. The multi-objective optimization algorithm utilized in this work exploits sequential domain patching technique and variable-fidelity EM simulation models. The proposed approach is demonstrated using two topologies of compact UWB monopole antennas.","PeriodicalId":253379,"journal":{"name":"2016 Loughborough Antennas & Propagation Conference (LAPC)","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124177498","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The first stage of the filter is a U-shaped half-wavelength resonator, whereas the second one is the planar dipole antenna. The bandwidth of the dipole is controlled by the edge coupling between the two stages. The U-shape resonator also acts as a balun. A truncated microstrip ground plane is used as the reflector to achieve a directional radiation pattern. The measured results show a bandwidth of 21% between 4.2 GHz and 5.2 GHz with a sharper roll-off than a conventional planar dipole, and an end-fire radiation pattern.","PeriodicalId":253379,"journal":{"name":"2016 Loughborough Antennas & Propagation Conference (LAPC)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122475684","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The key component of our technique is an inverse surrogate model that is constructed using reference designs representing optimum antenna geometries for selected values of the substrate permittivity and thicknesses. The surrogate returns the values of antenna dimensions corresponding to the substrate parameters of interest. For the sake of computational efficiency, the model is set up at the level of low-fidelity (coarse-discretization) EM antenna simulations and further corrected by means of a single high-fidelity reference design. The presented procedure is demonstrated using a planar dual-band dipole antenna re-designed for a target range of substrate permittivity from 2.0 to 5.0 and thickness from 0.5 mm to 1.5 mm.","PeriodicalId":253379,"journal":{"name":"2016 Loughborough Antennas & Propagation Conference (LAPC)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116775548","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The capacity calculations are applied for a new proposed channel model entitled the spherical model. The presented MIMO antenna systems are consisted of two configurations. Each configuration has four trapezoidal antennas. Configuration I is designed with and without defected ground slot. Configuration II also is designed with and without slot integrated waveguide. The DGS and the SIW structures are added in order to reduce the mutual coupling between the antennas. The two configurations differ in the mutual coupling obtained from each one, and in the geometrical shapes of the configurations with respect to the positions of the antennas relative to each other. All of the configurations are fabricated. A strong agreement between the measured and the simulated results is obtained. Matlab codes are used to depict the capacities versus the SNR at 4.96 GHz with a band of 80 MHz. The results discuss the effect of the mutual coupling and the spatial correlation on the capacity of the system using the proposed model.","PeriodicalId":253379,"journal":{"name":"2016 Loughborough Antennas & Propagation Conference (LAPC)","volume":"324 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116299385","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
