On the one hand, “veteran” colonies, having a long tradition of colonial coinages, maintained the Roman character of their issues. On the other hand, most colonies created in the 3rd century, recognised by scholars as “titular”, since no colonists were supposed to be settled there, also decided to follow the pattern of universal colonial coinage. The use of Latin, the exposure of status and typical colonial motifs such as a “foundation scene”, military emblems and Marsyas were exploited in the final issues of the Roman colonies. Even though the Romanitas of many colonies was merely superficial, coins performed the role of a medium which manifested the Roman nature of the colonies.","PeriodicalId":253378,"journal":{"name":"Notae Numismaticae - Zapiski Numizmatyczne","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132406021","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The location and context of the hoard also provide an opportunity to relate it to the results of research on the monetization of villages and the role of cash rents in the transformations of the rural economy in the early modern era. A high technical level coin counterfeit from the Perespa hoard deserves A separate reflection as it suggests that it was the product of an official mint.","PeriodicalId":253378,"journal":{"name":"Notae Numismaticae - Zapiski Numizmatyczne","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132399402","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The chronological structure of silver and bronze coins, including those found individually, in hoards and in small foundation deposits, clearly indicates the existence of only a few stages of increased coin inflow in the almost two-hundred-year history of the presence of Roman army units in Apsaros. All of them coincide with important military events in the East and seem to be a testimony to the periodic concentration of Roman troops in the fort. Between the waves of monetary inflow, one can easily observe periods in which coins only reached Apsaros to a limited extent. The aim of the paper is an attempt to interpret the main waves of coins entering the fort in Apsaros in a historical context.","PeriodicalId":253378,"journal":{"name":"Notae Numismaticae - Zapiski Numizmatyczne","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128434883","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Type I, known from just two specimens, features a crouching horse reverse. Type II depicts a trotting stallion and comprises two sequences – Series A and B. Die linkage shows that most of Series A was struck using two to four anvils concurrently to speed production. The entire coinage of staters was minted during a short period of time in the mid-4th century BC. It is argued that Series A represents cavalry pay for the joint Macedonian and Thessalian army commanded by Philip II in the Thessalian campaign of c. 352 that culminated in the battle of the Crocus Field, and Series B represents cavalry pay for his subsequent operations in Thessaly.","PeriodicalId":253378,"journal":{"name":"Notae Numismaticae - Zapiski Numizmatyczne","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134569489","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are also suggestions that various images placed on royal coins refer to the mythical founder of the dynasty and his foreign origin. But a review of these images does not provide convincing arguments to justify the above-mentioned opinion. The preserved fragments of poetry dedicated to Alexander I seem to speak rather in favor of his interest in the Trojan myth. If the Argive origin of the royal family is so strongly emphasized by Herodotus, Thucydides, and Euripides, then perhaps the “establishment” of the genealogical ties of the Macedonian kings with Temenidae of Argos took place in Athens. The Greek authors presented the Macedonian rulers with versions of the mythical past of their family linked to Greek tradition. But there is not much to indicate that the predecessors of Alexander the Great attached particular importance to them.","PeriodicalId":253378,"journal":{"name":"Notae Numismaticae - Zapiski Numizmatyczne","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130192063","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It was detected during archaeological investigations led by L.D. Dmitrov in 1946. It was found outside the fortress, on its glacis, as part of excavation site “A”. Until recently the hoard was unknown in the numismatic literature. \u0000At the moment of discovery, the hoard was composed of 34 coins (according to excavation diary kept in the archive of the Institute of Archaeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine). Today, only 33 coins are kept in the collection of the Institute of Archaeology. All of them are divisional copper coins of the Moldovan prince Alexander I, minted 1425–1430. \u0000Since the hoard can be classified as a small pouch of money of the same type – copper puls – it is difficult to set the period when it was lost or hidden. Most probably, this could have occurred either soon after the issue of the coins, at the end of the reign of Alexander I, or later, during the reign of his sons, Ilyash I in 1432–1433, or even Stephen II in 1433–1435.","PeriodicalId":253378,"journal":{"name":"Notae Numismaticae - Zapiski Numizmatyczne","volume":"189 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114198105","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
