Both are large, heavily worn bronzes, probably minted during the reign of Claudius. One has a rectangular countermark with the legend TRAIAN DACIC (GIC 603), while the other bears four countermarks, two each on the obverse and reverse. The obverse has a countermark depicting a circular shield (GIC 538) to the right, and an oval stamp to the left, representing the GIC 108 type with the head of Domitian. The reverse features a rectangular countermark with the legend TRAIAN DACIC (GIC 603), of the type known from the first coin, and an oval countermark with the bust of Hadrian and the inscription AVTO KAI ΑΔΡΙΑ (GIC 38). What makes these coins interesting is the sequence of countermarks. While the first coin only bears a countermark with Trajan’s name, the Trajanic countermark on the second coin was evidently struck later than that of Hadrian. This seems to support the view that at least some proportion of countermarks made with the TRAIAN DACIC stamp were applied after Hadrian’s portrait and name had already been struck on the coin.","PeriodicalId":253378,"journal":{"name":"Notae Numismaticae - Zapiski Numizmatyczne","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124499899","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This coin is a dupondius with a value equal to 24 units, as attested by the value mark Κ-Δ on the reverse. The finder, Mr Marcin Haraburda, handed it over to the Regional Museum in Augustów. Although the coin find does not have any clearly determined context, it is possible – on the basis of a general analysis of the inflow of the Imperial and Roman provincial coinage into the area of the West Balt Culture Environment and the broadly conceived archaeological context – to link the presence of this dupondius with the milieu of the Sudovian culture, which started to develop in that territory beginning from the Younger Roman Period.","PeriodicalId":253378,"journal":{"name":"Notae Numismaticae - Zapiski Numizmatyczne","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125363422","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A die study with an emphasis on the analysis of iconography, conducted on a corpus consisting of twenty-nine specimens, allows three typologically distinct stages to be distinguished in the development of the series. The identification of prototypes employed at each stage enables the origins of all discussed types to be reconstructed and provides a new terminus post quem for the series. A brief summary of the available metrological and metallurgical data is also given, as well as known findspots, which, in the case of several previously unpublished specimens, shed new light on the distribution of the last issues.","PeriodicalId":253378,"journal":{"name":"Notae Numismaticae - Zapiski Numizmatyczne","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115405373","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The authors identified 38 punches that were used for countermarking, allowing us to say with confidence that the size of this countermarked issue was quite large. The countermarked imitations of the dangs of Said-Ahmad II have not previously been examined in the numismatic literature. This is due to the rarity of these coins, which were previously known only from occasional, single finds. Such countermarks have rarely been published on the pages of Internet numismatic forums and have received the conditional name of “inverted Allah”.","PeriodicalId":253378,"journal":{"name":"Notae Numismaticae - Zapiski Numizmatyczne","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127362440","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The timespans are considered rounded up to full years, i.e. the shortest timespan would be 1 year, while the longer ones could cover several, a dozen or more years. This works well, for example, with Roman coins from the Imperial period, or with some categories of medieval or modern European coinage. The method is based on a simple mathematical model and the values calculated for each year are presented in a graphical form (as values of a discrete function spread on a timeline) to show the chronological distribution of coins in percentage terms. Such distributions make sets of coins easy to compare. The method is much less effective when applied to precisely dated coins (e.g. with an accuracy of one year), like Roman coins from the Republican period, or certain categories of early medieval Islamic coins.","PeriodicalId":253378,"journal":{"name":"Notae Numismaticae - Zapiski Numizmatyczne","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126969002","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Myzgin","doi":"10.52800/ajst.1.17.a8","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.52800/ajst.1.17.a8","url":null,"abstract":"The four gold coins (three solidi and a semissis) of the usurper Magnus Magnentius (350–353) recently discovered accidentally in Ukraine, probably in the Cherkasy, Sumy, Volhynia regions and in one of the central or eastern parts of the country, are discussed in this article. All of the coins were minted in Trier. Before that, on the territory of Ukraine, the only gold coins of Magnentius were known from the hoard of aurei and solidi discovered in 1892, not far from the village of Brestiv, Zakarpattya region. Three of the new coins have loops for use as ornaments (the fourth coin is presumably also looped), which is indirect evidence of their authenticity as finds and may be further evidence that the elite of the Barbarian society used the solidi pendants as symbols of power. The lack of data on the archaeological context of the coins makes the question of the ways and reasons for their appearance in eastern Barbaricum very complex. Two equally valid hypotheses in this article are considered. The first could explain the influx of these coins as a result of payment for the participation of barbarians as mercenaries in an army serving Magnentius. The second hypothesis is that the coins could have come from the territory of southern Scandinavia (where such finds are also well known) due to tribal exchange, which was particularly active during the 4th century. A promising research prospect is the identification of die-links among the finds of the gold issues of Magnentius found in the Roman Empire and Barbaricum, that provide a more precise direction on when and how these coins came into the region.","PeriodicalId":253378,"journal":{"name":"Notae Numismaticae - Zapiski Numizmatyczne","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131851524","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
