Fabrication of on-chip coils is costly and suffers from low Q-factor. Design, simulation, and fabrication of novel off-chip solenoid inductors with high quality factor are reported. Minimum feature size of standard PCB fabrication has been used to make embedded solenoids in Duroid substrate with 2.2 relative permittivity. A solenoid turn included two imbedded copper via of 125 µm radius and two surface conductors of 250 µm wide to shape a rectangular coil. Different pitch sizes, conductor lengths, solenoid heights, and numbers of turns were simulated and fabricated. The maximum quality factor was 160 for a 500 µm pitch size and 1 mm conductor length in a substrate of 380 µm thick. In addition to the very high Q-factor, the inductor benefits from facilitated design and ease of fabrication. Analytical design has been investigated by a lumped circuit model and electromagnetic simulation. The result of S-parameter measurements was in close agreement with the designed circuit. The micro-solenoids had a higher quality factor compared to all other counterparts.","PeriodicalId":253374,"journal":{"name":"WAMICON 2011 Conference Proceedings","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129732008","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In term of efficiency, the most important element is the amplifier. In order to obtain high efficiency performance, it is possible to use several architectures associated with switched amplifier. In this paper, we propose different figures of merit established from DC characteristics of a device used in switched mode. We propose our approach of establishing a Mobile WiMAX test bed as a part of our collaborations with the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) for investigating the performance of current and upcoming broadband wireless technologies in a railroad environment. The focus is on studying the impact of mobility on the wireless system throughput for moving trains at high velocities. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive measurement that will assist others in understanding Mobile WiMAX performance and guiding future network deployment. In this paper, we describe details of our test bed and discuss test results obtained from our laboratory and test bed. Based on our measurements, we can achieve a throughput of approximately 2.8 Mbps downlink and 2 Mbps uplink with the most robust modulation scheme, a maximum distance of 7.5 kilometers, and a speed of 60 mph, making Mobile WiMAX a promising candidate for large-scale deployments in environments such as the railroad industry.","PeriodicalId":253374,"journal":{"name":"WAMICON 2011 Conference Proceedings","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122158619","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These SOA results were achieved by combining 16 GaN amplifier modules in a low-loss spatial power combiner network. The combining structure has shown a port to port loss of 0.25–0.75 dB from 8GHz to 12 GHz. The 16-way combiner demonstrates an overall combining efficiency of 90%. The size of the 16-way amplifier/combiner is 2.2″ dia. x 6″ length. In a regular predistortion power amplifier (PA), the AM-AM and AM-PM distortion (Or IMD3, Third Order Inter-modulation Distortion, and IMD5) of the PA are not known before measurement. In the Mirror Predistortion technique, we choose a PA with identical design as, but smaller than the main PA, as a Mirror Predistorter (PD). Since this Mirror PD's nonlinear characteristics tracks the main PA, there is no need for nonlinear characterization for the PD or the PA. We have reduced this concept to practice and have built a mirror predistortion linear PA having 23 dB improvement in IMD3, at a 2-tone total output power of 34 dBm, with 7.5 dB back off from P1dB of 41.5dBm.","PeriodicalId":253374,"journal":{"name":"WAMICON 2011 Conference Proceedings","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129294566","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

RF-PWM signals are generated with a dedicated 65 nm CMOS modulator and subsequently amplified with a GaN Class-E power amplifier (PA). The modulator use extended drain MOS (EDMOS) high voltage transistors to provide the required voltage swing to drive the GaN used as a switch. The imaginary load impedance of the Class-E is electronically tunable and is implemented with in-house high breakdown voltage SiC varactors. The tunable imaginary load impedance enables optimization of the Class-E versus the duty cycle (pulse width). The peak efficiency is therefore preserved over a wide range of output power levels. The measured drain efficiency of the Class-E output stage is above 70% over a 6.5 dB output power dynamic range. The overall transmitter efficiency is above 60% for the same dynamic range.","PeriodicalId":253374,"journal":{"name":"WAMICON 2011 Conference Proceedings","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130766264","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This VCO is designed for use in licensed E-band (i.e., 81–86 GHz) transceiver systems. In contrast to conventional LC-VCO topologies, a standing wave transmission line resonator instead of a lumped LC tank is employed to provide an extended output frequency range and relatively low phase noise. A slow wave coplanar waveguide (CPW) structure was used as the transmission line to reduce conductor and radiation losses and to minimize substrate attenuation. Both simulation and chip measurements show good VCO performance. Wide tuning range (1.7-GHz) and low phase noise (−102-dBc/Hz at 1MHz) were achieved.
