Methodology: A total of 300 patients were interviewed verbally on a questionnaire translated into Urdu. Results: Regarding CKD, only 13% of the participants knew that it is a long term and irreversible condition, with only 6% of them being aware that it can also be asymptomatic in initial stages. Only 5% of them knew that disease management revolves around reducing its progression and complications. 33% of the patients knew about hepatitis B or C, out of which 26% had knowledge that it can progress to chronic hepatitis. Only 21% knew that the infection is lifelong and incurable. Almost 80% of the respondents were not aware regarding the different routes of transmission, the symptoms or the complications. Conclusion: The research identified dismally low level of awareness up to 80-90%, regarding awareness aspects of two very common health conditions. Thus, it is imperative to design religiously and culturally acceptable public health strategies to increase awareness for earlier detection of both CKD and CLD for better health outcomes and therefore to reduce the economic burden of our country. Addressing this pressing issue requires prioritizing childhood asthma within the healthcare agenda of the country. This editorial aims to shed light on the importance of prioritizing childhood asthma, highlight the challenges faced, and propose strategies to enhance awareness, prevention, and management of this chronic respiratory condition. Childhood asthma imposes a substantial burden on affected children, their families, and the healthcare system in Pakistan. The prevalence of childhood asthma has risen significantly in recent years, with various factors such as environmental pollution, allergens, and urbanization contributing to its increasing incidence. Recognizing the burden and impact of childhood asthma is vital for developing targeted interventions and improving health outcomes. One of the key steps in tackling childhood asthma is raising awareness and promoting education about the condition. Empowering parents, teachers, healthcare professionals, and communities with knowledge about asthma triggers, symptoms, and proper management techniques is crucial. Public awareness campaigns, school-based initiatives, and community outreach programs can play a pivotal role in promoting asthma education and dispelling misconceptions surrounding the condition. Prevention plays a vital role in reducing the burden of childhood asthma. Implementing measures to minimize exposure to environmental triggers, such as air pollution, tobacco smoke, and indoor allergens, is essential. Collaborative efforts between the government, environmental agencies, and healthcare institutions can help establish policies and regulations aimed at reducing asthma triggers and promoting a cleaner and healthier environment for children. Access to quality healthcare services is crucial for effective management of childhood asthma. However, barriers such as limited availability of specialized care, high medication costs, and lack of trained healthcare professionals pose significant challenges. It is imperative to prioritize the development of pediatric asthma clinics, ensure the availability of affordable medications, and enhance the training of healthcare providers in asthma management. Additionally, telemedicine and digital health solutions can bridge the gap in access to care, particularly in remote areas. Collaboration among healthcare providers, researchers, policymakers, and international organizations is essential to address the complexities of childhood asthma. Robust research efforts should be encouraged to understand the epidemiology, risk factors, and genetic determinants of asthma in the Pakistani population. These research findings can guide the development of targeted interventions, personalized treatment approaches, and prevention strategies. The outcome of breathing is to ventilate the lungs and we also know that there is lung compliance which reflects its efficacy. But most of the people including doctors may not know that outcome of breathing is also the ventilation of middle ear and there is a middle ear compliance, which is consequently related to hearing. Rhinitis- a simple inflammatory disease of nasal mucosa, characterized by nasal discharge, nasal blockade, itching and sneezing is a very common disease in children as well as adults. Chronic Rhinitis due to its continued and exhausting character drastically influences the patient quality of life. Allergic Rhinitis is one of the most prevalent longstanding diseases. The current prevalence of allergic rhinitis is 10 to 40%. It is one of the diseases that mostly remains undiagnosed1. Atmospheric and climatic factors which are changing rapidly, largely responsible for the rising worldwide occurrence of allergic rhinitis and related constrains such as chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, and finally it has resulted into a worldwide health issues, influencing about twenty five percent of the world’s population2. Moreover, allergic rhinitis along with its associated other illnesses related to lungs and the increasing cost of treating these conditions can grossly affect the economic features of patients as well as the community. The main issue is poor perception of this condition, which is directly related to failed control of the disease3. In addition to the direct effects of primary symptoms of rhinitis patients might encounter sleep disorders, fatigue, impaired memory and depression, all of these factors lead to reduced quality of life. Quality of life reflects happiness, comfort and prosperity. Health has a direct impact on quality of life. So keeping in mind the notable and outstanding consequences of these manifestations on patient’s quality of life, making a timely diagnosis of disease is the first step towards the desired prompt actions. Consequently we can take various steps to counter the frequency of accompanying diseases of sinuses, lungs and ears. Most of the time the patients, their family members and sometimes physicians as well used to take it lightly without knowing the long term effects on patient general health and some specific diseases which at times might end up with serious complications, some of which are even fatal. Allergic Rhinitis can have a negative impact on various components of patient’s life including sleep cycle, behavior and daily activities. Children having Allergic rhinitis used to clean their nose very frequently due to nasal discharge with the upward movement of palm of their hand against the tip of nose which ultimately result in the formation of a skin crease over the nose and is called Allergic Crease, which remains there as a lifelong esthetic issue. Moreover they are prone to develop recurrent throat infections like tonsillitis, ","PeriodicalId":253275,"journal":{"name":"Isra Medical Journal","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128535946","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Study Design: Comparative cross sectional. Place and Duration: This study was conducted in the Chemical Pathology department at Combined Military Hospital, Lahore for a period of six months from November 2022 to March 2023. Methodology: A total of 100 arterial blood samples were taken from 50 patients admitted in ICU using a regular plastic syringe flushed with 5000 IU/ mL liquid heparin and another containing lyophilized heparin. Samples were analyzed immediately after collection on Roche Cobas b121 ABG analyzer. Three of the measured parameters (pH, pCO2 and pO2) were then compared among both syringe groups. pH, pO2 and pCO2 were compared using mean difference. Results: The difference of means for pH was insignificant (p- Value >0.05). But pCO2 and pO2 showed significant difference in means with p- Values <0.05 (0.007 and 0.037, respectively). Bland Altman plots were also plotted for all three parameters. 12% of the pH values, 8% pco2 and 6% pO2 values exceeded the total allowable error. Conclusion: Arterial blood pH was comparable between the two types of syringes used. The pCO2 and pO2 differed significantly and where found to be lower in blood samples collected in the liquid heparin syringes. Study Design: Descriptive, cross-sectional. Place and Duration: The study was conducted in the Department of Medicine, Pakistan Railways Hospital, Islamic International Medical College/Riphah International University, from 1st August 2022 to 31st January 2023. Methodology: A total of 200 diabetic patients were included. Study variables included age, gender, duration of diabetes/hypertension, glycemic/blood pressure control, target organ damage, compliance to treatment and life style modification, regular follow ups and awareness of target blood pressure goals. Data was recorded on a self-developed proforma. Diabetic patients with hypertension were classified into those with optimally controlled blood pressure (< 140/90 mmHg) and those with uncontrolled hypertension despite treatment (BP > 140/90 mm Hg). Results: Prevalence of hypertension in our diabetic population was 68.5%. Blood pressure was optimally controlled in 50.4%. Poor glycemic control was observed in 56.5% patients. Patients with sub-optimal glycemic control were more likely to be hypertensive (77.8%) as compared to their normoglycemic counterparts (56.3%). There was a significant correlation between uncontrolled hypertension and poor glycemic control (p-Value 0.202). Older age, female gender, duration of hypertension, lack of awareness of target BP goals and non-adherence to pharmacological and non-pharmacological measures were independent predictors for uncontrolled hypertension. Conclusion: Blood pressure is not optimally controlled in half of the diabetic hypertensive patients despite treatment. Uncontrolled hypertension correlates significantly with poor glycemic control.
