The train is equipped with a UHF-RFID reader, and a set of passive tags are distributed along the railway track at assigned known positions. By exploiting the measurement of the phase samples of the signal backscattered from each tag, the reader position with respect to the tags themselves is estimated through an algorithm with a relatively low computational complexity. The algorithm exploits the knowledge of the tag positions and the train speed vector. Based on a number of assumptions, preliminary numerical simulations demonstrated that the proposed technique could be a valid alternative to more expensive systems that are available for train localization, as for example active transponders.","PeriodicalId":251364,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE International Conference on RFID (RFID)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115727551","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The measurements are done with off-the-shelf EPC Class1 Gen2 tags, an automated tag positioner, a modified software defined radio (SDR) platform as the RFID reader, and a PC post-processing the ranging results. The ranging error and its variance is measured and discussed at tag distances of 0.1–4m for different tags, operating frequencies, and ranging signal power levels.","PeriodicalId":251364,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE International Conference on RFID (RFID)","volume":"311 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124419756","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
