However, the application of Lean outside the factory floor is not straightforward, where principles and practices may be translated and contextualized when introduced in functional areas that differ significantly from manufacturing. Especially in such multifaceted contexts as to be found in System Engineering (SE) companies. In this article, we investigate the extent to which SE companies relate their practices to the knowledge component of Lean product development, and the degree to which such lean practices and capabilities are implemented. The overall goal is to determine how SE companies compare to companies in other industrial sectors in this regard, and thereby gaining new insights into strategies for more contextual implementation of lean in engineering functions. A survey is conducted in the Norwegian manufacturing industry to determine Lean practices from the construct of a generic model as basis. The survey was answered by 257 respondents from 50 companies, providing the opinion of individuals as to where they place their current practices and capabilities on the lean maturity scale for each question, including a supplemental set of performance and productivity related assessment items. Results indicate that there seems to be significant differences between perceived LPD - performance in Systems Engineering versus the other sectors when talking about knowledge management. Traditional design procedures do not take the recursive and adaptive nature of these systems fully into account. The author starts from the premise that the feedback loop and recursive causal nature inherent to agri-eco-socio-technical systems make them inherently wicked1. The design of a low carbon footprint farm takes this into account and uses a transdisciplinary approach to consider the solutions from a broad stakeholder group. Countering the need to maintain and extend the business value of these systems is the need to do so in the simplest, cheapest, and least risky manner available. There are a number of approaches used by software engineers to mitigate the negative impact of evolving a legacy systems, including leveraging service-oriented architecture to automate manual tasks previously performed by humans. A relatively recent approach in software engineering focuses upon implementing self-managing attributes, or “autonomic” behavior in software applications and systems of applications in order to reduce or eliminate the need for human monitoring and intervention. Entire systems can be autonomic or they can be hybrid systems that implement one or more autonomic components to communicate with external systems. In this paper, we describe a commercial development project in which a legacy multi-channel commerce enterprise resource planning system was extended with service-oriented architecture an autonomic control loop design to communicate with an external third-party security screening provider. The goal was to reduce the cost of the human labor necessary to screen an ever-increasing volume of orders and to reduce the potential for human error in the screening process. Especially the interface between systems engineering and sales can be a bottleneck. While configurators help to generate valid system variants, the definition of configuration rules is essential. However the functional dependencies often are implicit knowledge of the systems engineer and are not known to the sales departments. This paper develops a tool to bridge this gap. It supports the systems engineers to store their knowledge using logical dependencies and translates them into a configurator. The bit error rate (BER) performance of several pulse design methods that meet the federal communications commission (FCC) requirements on the TR-MAS receiver is compared in this paper. The odd or even pulses based system significantly outperforms the prolate spheroidal (PS) pulses when the same pulse duration (or effective bandwidth) is employed in the TR-MAS system for multiple users. This concept of Product-Service Systems (PSS) rises attractive opportunities for customers and companies. Based on literature an introduction into PSS development is given. PSS modeling and the dynamic behavior of PSS are discussed. Three suitable modeling methods are identified: Agent-Based Modeling (ABM), System Dynamics (SD) and Discrete Event (DE) Simulation. In this paper the well-known DE approach is transferred from its traditional applications to PSS development. Characteristics of DE simulation and its benefits and limitations in context of PSS are presented. A major advantage is the forecast and evaluation of different scenarios. This contribution identifies possible application areas to support PSS development with DE simulation in context of both development process and PSS type. Three examples show the applicability of the DE approach in a wide range, one from literature and two academic ones. This paper will examine the effectiveness of MPX. Herein we attempt to find false positives and false negatives, and to determine what attacks may still be feasible. In particular we wish to see if a system protected by MPX is still exploitable. In this context, the determination which of the product components shall be individualized by the customer represents a major challenge for the product development. In order to meet these challenges, the “Design for Open Innovation (DfOI) Methodology” will be presented in this extended abstract and shall support the product developer during the definition of an area of individualization within already existing products. Therefore, a five phase methodology is proposed. Each phase contains several work steps which follow sequentially.
