In addition, reconfiguration using portions of both rings to circumvent faulty elements in a double ring network is shown to be equivalent to the single ring configuration already studied. First, it is used as a basis for an implementation on a multiprocessing platform. Second, it reveals the areas where protocol modifications and/or tuning would yield more efficient implementations on multiprocessors. The focus is on the analysis, and detailed dependence graphs among the atomic TCP/IP protocol functions are presented. Franta","doi":"10.1109/LCN.1992.228112","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/LCN.1992.228112","url":null,"abstract":"The 800-Mb HIPPI data channel has been defined by ANSI X3T9.3 for the purpose of connecting supercomputers, large-scale peripheral systems, high-performance workstations, and network layer routers. In addition to being a capable point-to-point medium, the HIPPI standard permits traffic to be routed through a series of intermediate crossbar switches, similar to telephone switching technology. The presence of crossbar switches requires a technique to control the selection of intermediate trunks between systems. An implementation of link state routing algorithms that can be practically used in this environment is described. The algorithms used take advantage of the fact that paths cannot be reentered as data progress from source to destination and are not directly applicable to many upcoming switching technologies such as ATM. The model reflects the station's perception of the subnetwork and it has been developed by mapping the media access control (MAC) protocol to a queuing service discipline. The model is a discrete-time single-server queue with two classes of customers served according to a quasi-gated discipline. The one class of customers represents the data packets generated by the station, while the other class represents the requests registered by the station. The experimental results show that the communications requirements of graphics-intensive applications are very high. The ATA mechanism is able to prevent with short response time any saturation or any underload of the network. The medium capacity is fairly shared between active nodes by keeping permanently the network global load under a given threshold. Offered as public network equivalent of a MAC-level service, the datagram transport offered by SMDS is easily integrated into networking protocol architectures using local area network (LAN) or metropolitan area network (MAN) technologies such as Ethernet and fiber distributed data interface (FDDI). A customer network management (CNM) service has been defined in conjunction with SMDS, based on SNMP. SMDS and the accompanying CNM service were successfully demonstrated. This type of system presents some advantages over conventional cable systems. Besides, when IRED is used, the radiation is negligible for the users and harmless. The problem of the management of traffic made up of the various actuation and control signals present in a car is addressed, and criteria for allocation of the available bandwidth and assessing the behavior of the FieldBus in various traffic conditions are discussed.
