An analysis is made of the influence of various objective functions on maximum link utilization, average packet delay and fairness. How the parameters in the proposed objective function affect network performance measures like the flow in the entire network, amount of rejected traffic, maximum link utilization, average packet delay, and unfairness among users is studied. These measures are evaluated for various networks and traffic configurations, and, on the basis of these studies and results, suggestions are made for obtaining the best network performance and utilization.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":249184,"journal":{"name":"[1992] Proceedings 17th Conference on Local Computer Networks","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-09-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126681808","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using synthetic workloads, packet capture success rather than signal propagation characteristics was measured. Specifically throughput, packet loss rates, range, and patterns of errors within packets were measured. It is concluded that CSMA/CA is quite successful in allocating bandwidth under stress, but that packet capture rate degrades very quickly once the LAN's effective range is exceeded. Hence, network maintainers should plan the layout of wireless networks at least as carefully as they plan wired networks.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":249184,"journal":{"name":"[1992] Proceedings 17th Conference on Local Computer Networks","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-09-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133528660","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is based on the use of learning automata to reduce the number of receiver collisions and, consequently, to improve the performance of the network. Each station has a learning automaton that decides which of the packets waiting for transmission will be transmitted at the beginning of the next time slot. The learning automaton used is a multifeedback automaton, specially designed for the receiver collision avoidance problem of WDM broadcast-and-select star networks. The asymptotic behavior of the system, which consists of the automata and the network, is analyzed. The probability of choosing each packet asymptotically tends to be proportional to the probability that no receiver collision will appear at the destination node of this packet. Extensive simulation results indicate that a significant performance improvement can be achieved when the algorithm is applied on the basic DT-WDMA protocol.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":249184,"journal":{"name":"[1992] Proceedings 17th Conference on Local Computer Networks","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-09-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125015428","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
