Consequently, even hospitals that have implemented HMIS and invested huge amounts of money on these systems are faced with several difficulties that need to be addressed before taking full advantage of these technologies to improve their health care service quality. The lack of improved quality in healthcare may create negative patient perceptions that my hinder their motivation to seek for health care in such facilities. In addition to HMIS implementation challenges, service quality challenges persist in hospitals. Consequently this paper investigates the HMIS implementation characteristics that influence the Service Quality of Healthcare in Private Hospitals in Kenya. The findings indicate that HMIS Relative Advantage, and healthcare dimensions - Quality Responsiveness, Responsibility, and Reliability have a significant influence on the successful use of HMIS.","PeriodicalId":248893,"journal":{"name":"2014 IST-Africa Conference Proceedings","volume":"90 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116841178","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The philosophy assumed is that businesses which follow good corporate governance principles and act in transparency by disclosing all relevant information to stakeholders are highly likely to be sustainable. A sustainable business purposively designs and /or develops its business strategy and operates its enterprise in the context of stakeholder-driven economic, political, social, and technological environmental influences to meet organizational objectives and needs (Strom, 2010). The furniture industry, in Mauritius, is fragmented and faces aggressive foreign competition. This article proposes a model to make the industry more productive, innovative and competitive. Sustainable businesses may be developed by the application of Social, Mobile, Analytics and Cloud technologies (SMAC). Trust is considered a key element in the model. With the application of SMAC technologies small and medium enterprises (SMEs) will be at par with large enterprises. Porter has developed an integrated framework that highlights the benefits of disclosing information with the objective of increasing productivity, innovativeness and competitiveness (Porter, 1990, Porter, 1998). Disclosure of information on corporate governance and sustainability reporting via the SMAC technologies will strengthen the relationship among stakeholders and build sustainable competitive advantages.","PeriodicalId":248893,"journal":{"name":"2014 IST-Africa Conference Proceedings","volume":"152 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127512304","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

But accessing of patient records by the patients and sharing of patient records amongst different stakeholders still needs more room for improvement. Even though there are a lot of Patient Care Information Systems (PCISs) and Computerised Provider Order Entry (CPOE) systems, these systems have not provided sufficient platforms for both patients and stakeholders to judiciously have access and share the records of the patients. A patient's medical record is one of the essential resources for enabling prompt and accurate diagnoses of the patient. Unavailability of such records can sometimes delay or prevent the patient from getting the right diagnosis. These problems can lead to death or the patient contracting other diseases. In this paper, we use a design science approach to propose a cloud computing framework where patients' records can be shared and accessed by those who sign up to the system with strict authorisation from the patient.","PeriodicalId":248893,"journal":{"name":"2014 IST-Africa Conference Proceedings","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115279607","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The use of biometric features for identification purposes requires that a particular biometric factor be unique for each individual, that it can be readily measured, and that it is invariant over time. In this work, a review of biometrics is made, including the characteristics of biometrics. The existing biometric technologies have been detailed with their relative strengths and weaknesses. Finally, applications using biometrics have been outlined with the view to understand that not all biometric are suitable for all the applications, each application has its requirements and the right biometric chosen will enhance the security of that application.","PeriodicalId":248893,"journal":{"name":"2014 IST-Africa Conference Proceedings","volume":"198 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116693355","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This change has brought the need for a new set of skills in the workplace, including the ability to solve problems. Introducing technology in education is one response to this reform. Intelligent tutoring systems are one form of e-learning. They are designed to reasonably adapt to each learner or user based on their background and progressive achievement. Because of the various advantages of these systems attempts are made to incorporate problem solving skill impartation abilities for learners. This paper describes an adapted version of ActiveMath, which explicitly teaches problem solving to students using the House Model framework. Results show the technique does contribute to improve the problem solving skills of learners.","PeriodicalId":248893,"journal":{"name":"2014 IST-Africa Conference Proceedings","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122667114","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In times of special events (such as extreme weather, emergencies, sporting goals, etc), status updates on Twitter often give people a better view of the event than traditional news operations or weather services. This paper describes a project in monitoring Twitter for weather status updates for a specific city and being able to automatically determine the current weather by analysing those tweets.","PeriodicalId":248893,"journal":{"name":"2014 IST-Africa Conference Proceedings","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134526134","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is contended that the integration of four key drivers (mobiles, data, sensors and social media) has a profound impact on society and human interaction on the social as well as the business scene. Whilst this impact has been intrusive, in that integration of these four key drivers eliminates the natural boundaries of privacy, it has also been beneficial in socioeconomic terms. These benefits are discussed from the perspective of the medical (mobile health) and business marketing (right time experiences) disciplines. Moreover, other business benefits from the use of these technologies have also been discussed in this paper. It is envisioned that this discursive paper will lead to an enlightenment within the continent and deepen the appreciation of integrative technologies. This paper asserts that these drivers, as stellar examples of best practice within the fields of medical and business marketing, can lead to similar innovations in other service industries.","PeriodicalId":248893,"journal":{"name":"2014 IST-Africa Conference Proceedings","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133985781","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is shown how the implementation of commercial-off-the-shelf application software has enabled Mauritian Government organisations to adopt global best practice. The paper focusses on revenue management, with particular reference to Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA) and Central Electricity Board (CEB), and how the achievements at these two organisations could be used as a template for other revenue collecting agencies within Mauritius. As Mauritius has built-up considerable skills and expertise in the domain public revenue collection and disbursement, potential ways of applying the existing competence and of replicating the established solutions to assist other departments will be discussed. The paper further shows how - based on the solid platform created within Mauritius - new innovative technologies, such as Big Data, Cloud Computing or mobile applications can easily be deployed.","PeriodicalId":248893,"journal":{"name":"2014 IST-Africa Conference Proceedings","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131929652","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
