Various network resources are required when connections are established and become available when connections are released. In order to make effective use of these resources and to reduce end-to-end delays, run-time configuration management is essentially required in such an environment. In this paper, we discuss run-time configuration problems and provide high-level solutions for them. We then propose a framework for run-time configuration management and present the design of run-time configuration manager.","PeriodicalId":248693,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IEEE International Workshop on System Management","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131231148","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is also responsible for change management. This service, along with monitoring management, can be considered as the most basic management service that all other services need. It becomes particularly important with modern distributed systems where we have a large number of heterogeneous components with complex relationships between them and with the need to meet the requirements of a continuously changing working environment. The management kernel of our system is an extended configuration management service which provides also monitoring functions. This paper focuses on the configuration management tasks, it represents the specification. Language used to describe managed entities, along with an algorithm which realizes a difficult compromise between consistency, performance, change transparency and support for a wide class of applications.","PeriodicalId":248693,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IEEE International Workshop on System Management","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116968489","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unfortunately, existing approaches achieve scalability by severely limiting flexibility. This paper considers an approach that infers navigations from a dimensional representation of the measurement name space. Doing so provides flexible navigation and results in dramatic improvements in scalability, as quantified by analytic models that are developed in this paper. Indeed, our models indicate that it is inherently unscalable to automate navigation by requiring the specification of relationships between measurement names, as is done in existing approaches. In contrast, the dimensional approach is optimal for the class of data sources considered in our models. Exploiting the dimensional approach requires addressing issues such as: irregularities in the measurement name space; mappings between the name space used for measurement collection and storage and the dimensional structured name space; and the efficient storage of measurement names. Solutions are proposed for all of these issues.","PeriodicalId":248693,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IEEE International Workshop on System Management","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129356112","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To distinguish between other kinds of relationship bindings, such as associations and aggregations, we call the interactions across object interfaces \"cooperation relations\". In order to manage the configuration of distributed systems, we introduce the configuration state of a cooperation relation, and refine the lifecycle of such a relation according to the value space of its configuration state. A formalization of the configuration state and an example of a self-manageable cooperation relation are presented. The identification of different kinds of cooperation relations is presented across a distributed system which is currently being used as an experimental platform.","PeriodicalId":248693,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IEEE International Workshop on System Management","volume":"123 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132982238","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Within this context, a proposal for performance evaluation applying the proactive concepts is here introduced. In addition, simulation facilities and programming concepts for distributed system were employed to obtain the required results. A telecommunications management network (TMN) has been envisioned to provide a framework for the operation, administration, maintenance and provisioning (OAM&P) of telecommunications networks and services in today's open, multi-vendor environment. Due to the inherent distributed nature of managing systems and managed systems, supporting distributed processing is an essential requirement in TMN. This paper examines the general requirements for supporting distributed processing for the purpose of open distributed management in TMN and proposes a solution which is based on the integrated use of two distributed processing technologies: the X.500 Directory Service and the ODP (Open Distributed Processing) Trader.","PeriodicalId":248693,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IEEE International Workshop on System Management","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127853282","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we propose a policy based approach to distributed systems management. The use of different abstraction levels allows a stepwise refinement from an informal strategic level to a formalized operational level. On the lowest level, we use a formal language for separate definition of policies and events, that enables the computer to check the syntax of a given policy description and to translate policies into executable rules. To increase the capability for reasoning on a given set of policies, we extended the architecture by a graph model of the process semantics of operational policy and event specifications. The graph model is supported by a compiler mapping operational specifications into their semantic graphs, and performing analysis and manipulation functions on such graphs.","PeriodicalId":248693,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IEEE International Workshop on System Management","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131244096","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most commonly, performance problems are detected by applying threshold tests to a set of detection metrics. For example, suppose that disk utilization is a detection metric, and its threshold value is 80%. Then, an alarm is raised if disk utilization exceeds 80%. Unfortunately, the ad hoc manner in which detection metrics are selected often results in false alarms and/or failing to detect problems until serious performance degradations result. To address this situation, we construct rules for metric selection based on analytic comparisons of statistical power equations for five widely used metrics: departure counts (D), number in system (L), response times (R), service times (S), and utilizations (U). These rules are assessed in the context of performance problems in the CPU and paging sub-systems of a production computer system.","PeriodicalId":248693,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of IEEE International Workshop on System Management","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-05-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128717529","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
