Rutgers also holds the records of the N e w Brunswick Colonization Society which include its minutes , memberships lists, and constitutions. T h e Society was active in 1838-1839 and revived in 1853-1854. T h e records of M i d d l e s e x County , N. J . , include a vo lume of slave manumiss ion records, 1800-1825, and a vo lume recording the births of Black children in the county, 1804-1844. T h e manumission register's entries include the name (and somet imes age) of the freed slave, the date of manumission, and the name and residence of the person registering the manumission. T h e volume is indexed by the name of person freed. Entries in the birth register include the name and sex of the child, the mother's given name, the name of the person reporting the birth, and the dates that the birth was reported and recorded. T h e Peter Still Papers (Burlington County, N . J . ) include correspondence, 1850-1875, relating to the purchase of his wife and family held as slaves in Alabama and to the publication of his biography. T h e collection also includes a Still family genealogy, 1798-1821.","PeriodicalId":247763,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of the Rutgers University Libraries","volume":"48 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120864478","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is not unusual for a shopper to take a copy of Consumer Reports to a stereo or appliance store, or consult any number of specialized consumer publications before purchasing a particular product. Prior to 1927, there were no organizations dedicated to helping consumers choose between competing brands of products. Frederick J. Schlink, born in Peoria, Illinois, in 1891, pioneered the effort to research and disseminate unbiased product information to consumers. Trained as an engineer, Schlink had acquired extensive experience in the field of standardization at the National Bureau of Standards in Washington, DC, and with the American Standards Association in New York City. He combined his interest in the standardization of products created for mass production, a disdain for bogus advertising claims, and a background in testing products to form the Consumers' Club in New York City in 1927. With the publication of his book Your Money s Worth (co-authored with Stuart Chase) in the same year, public sentiment was stirred to demand a consumer testing organization. This book exposed the excesses of advertising and the hazards of shoddy products, and called for independent product testing. The overwhelming response to the Your Money's Worth led to the publication of the first consumer rating bulletin entitled The Consumers ' Club Commodity List. The first issue of The List was published on October 27, 1927. In the introduction, Schlink explained that The List was the first step toward giving the small consumer access to critical information about everyday products. The format of the bulletin included two columns subdivided by various products. Products endorsed by The List were filed directly under a column \"A\" list; those commodities receiving a negative mark from the compilers were placed in the \"B\" list. Douglass Library serves students and faculty at Douglass College, the largest women's college in the United States, and Cook College, the Land Grant College of New Jersey, and the Mason Gross School of the Arts. The collection on women in agriculture includes profiles on farm women, anthropological studies and case studies, particularly from the Third World. Most of this literature is written by women. When Ester Boserup, an economist, published her book, Women in Economic Development m 1970, she was one of the first to focus on the relationship between women's role and economic development. Boserup documented the connections between certain land use patterns and agricultural techniques and its relationship to division of labor based upon gender. Experts on both colonial and contemporary agriculture have viewed crop production as being a male oriented task because that reflected the traditional European concepts. Consequently, women in underdeveloped countries were rarely involved in the development process. They were not permitted to participate in training programs for agricultural modernization and development and their contributions to agriculture have been ignored. Rural women were deprived of their right to land ownership as a result of land reforms instituted by male oriented European administrators. Boserup's study initiated a considerable amount of debate and research on the participation of women in world agriculture. The books cited in the bibliography reflect women's roles and contributions to agriculture in the industrialized countries and the developing countries. These books have been acquired for the Douglass collection to serve the disciplines of agriculture, rural sociology and women's studies. A growing role for women in agriculture is anticipated in the future as the struggle for women's rights grows and receives more serious consideration in the world arena.","PeriodicalId":247763,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of the Rutgers University Libraries","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129809366","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A native of New York City, Hobhouse was graduated from Oxford University in 1969. She subsequently worked as an editor and also wrote articles on art topics for several magazines. Her first novel, Nellie without Hugo, appeared in 1982 and was hailed as the work of a talented new writer. Her subsequent books Dancingin the Dark (1983) and November {1986) received generally favorable reviews as well. These three novels, set variously in New York and London, explore conflicts between freedom and security in the context of personal relationships. A fourth novel, published posthumously, is the autobiographical Furies, released in 1993. Nonfiction books by Hobhouse include Everybody Who Was Anybody (1975), a biography of Gertrude Stein, and The Bride Stripped Bare: The Artist and the Female Nude in the Twentieth Century (1988). Present in the Hobhouse papers are notes, manuscripts of writings, reviews, correspondence, photographs, appointment books and other documents totaling approximately twelve cubic feet in size. Completing the collection are family photographs and papers of the author's mother, Frances Hobhouse, a New York-based sculptor. Theatrical papers donated by Paul Foster (RC '54) reflect three decades of his activities as a playwright. Foster is a former president of La Mama E.T.C., the off-off-Broadway venue where many of his earlier plays debuted or were staged. The papers received document the full range of Foster's experimental theater output, from his early one-act plays such as \"Hurrah for the Bridge\" and \"Balls,\" through the internationally acclaimed Tom Paine and Elizabeth /. The approximately 21 cubic feet of papers consist of a biographical file, 1964-1989; calendars, 1972-1990; address books, 1969-1984 and undated; correspondence, 1963-1993, including letters exchanged with American and European actors, directors, producers, theatrical agents, publishers, and foundation","PeriodicalId":247763,"journal":{"name":"The Journal of the Rutgers University Libraries","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133438678","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
