Sprout by-product includes used media, part of the sprout stems and roots left after harvest. The accumulation of this waste with increasing amounts over time can cause serious environmental pollution in production areas. To reduce waste volume at the resource, this study provided several treatment methods of sprout by-product to effectively recycle it for safe sprout production. The treatment methods proposed for sprout by-product were i) To incubate with microbial product called as EMUNIV for 30 days to create the first organic growing medium - GT2, pre-treat with 1% lime solution; ii) Mix with dried soybean husk at a ratio of 1:1 to create the second organic growing medium - GT3; or iii) Mix with dried soybean husk in a 1:1 ratio to create the third organic growing medium - GT4. The results showed that the created organic growing media had neutral pH, high organic matter, and nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium content. The treated substrates were not contaminated with some heavy metals (Pb, Cd, As) and pathogenic microorganisms (E.coli, Salmonella). Raphanus sativus var. radicula sprouts grown on new organic media had the seed germination rate of 95-98%, normal growing with higher productivity than the control from 1.14 to 1.2 times, crude protein, vitamin C content also higher than the control. Sprouts grown using this recycled media were assessed safe because of not being polluted by heavy metals (Pb, Cd), pathogenic microorganisms (E.coli, Salmonella) and nitrate. The treatment of sprout by-product according to the method for creating organic medium GT2 was most suitable and recommended for sprout production areas. \u0000

In this study, the hood experiments were conducted to investigate the emission of air pollutants from rice straw burning (RSB). Samples of PM were collected isokinetically following the U.S. EPA methods 1, 1A, and 5. Gaseous pollutants were directly measured using a flue gas analyzer (Testo 350 XL). Emission factors (EF) (g.kg-1) determined for PM, CO2, CO, and SO2 were 17 ± 3.8, 1399 ± 228, 68 ± 22, and 1.5 ± 0.4, respectively meanwhile NO and NO2 were not detected in the flue gas. It was observed that flaming is the main phase in the process of RSB. The total emission from rice straw burning of 13 provinces in the Mekong River Delta of Vietnam in 2020 was estimated using the EF obtained from the hood experiments. The result shows that Kien Giang, An Giang, and Dong Thap were the high emission group in the Mekong River Delta, contributing 19%, 17%, and 14% to total emissions. The results of this study provide a scientific basis for further studies to determine EF from rice straw open burning in the fields and find sustainable measures to control this activity. \u0000

It requires accurate coastal vulnerability assessments (CVI). The aim of this study is to propose (1) a new approach to classify the coasts and (2) the selection of appropriate criteria to assess the CVI index at the regional scale. Accordingly, the study has calculated the CVI index for the coastal area of Son Tra - Cua Dai region based on 5 coastal characteristic variables, 3 coastal dynamics and 4 socio-economic variables. The results show that more than 15% of the coastline of the study area has very high CVI values, especially in the coastal area of Hoi An. The projection of changes in sea surface temperature (SST) in these regions is an important research topic in marine science. However, this is a very difficult problem due to the lack of available long-term projection data. Recently, with the development of numerical modeling technology, it has become an important way to help us understand climate change. This paper focuses on studying the SST changes in the East Vietnam Sea during the history of the 20th century and the change under 3 emission scenarios in the 21st century based on a combination of 20 global models (GCM) from Phase 5 of the the Climate Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) and together with the observed data set. Compared with the observed data, most of the global GCMs models can simulate well the spatial and seasonal changes of the SST over the East Vietnam Sea regions. The spatial and annual SST trends over the the 20th century based on both observations and multimodel ensemble averages show that the warming trend of SST over most of the East Vietnam Sea with the largest warming trend occurred in the center and southern regions of the East Vietnam Sea. However, compared with the observation, CMIP5 underestimated SST trends over most regions of East Vietnam Sea. In addition, there is a consistency between the CMIP5 and the spatial and seasonal observations of the SST trend in the East Vietnam Sea areas. The future SST projections for East Vietnam Sea indicate that RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5 exhibit a gradual increase in annual SST during the 21st century at a rate of 0.1 °C and 0.3 °C per 10 years respectively. The lowest emission mitigation scenario, RCP 2.6, produces the lowest rate of warming. By the end of the 21st century, the annual SST is projected to increase by 0.5-2.0 °C in 3 emission scenarios of typical representative concentration pathways (RCP) 8.5, 4.5 and 2.6. \u0000

A greenhouse experiment was carried out by mixing biochar with the tested soil at ratios of 0; 0.7; 1.5; 3, and 6% (w/w) and incubating for 100 days. Experimental soil samples were taken on days 5, 15, 30, 60, and 100 to analyze for 11 physicochemical parameters. The soil quality index (SQI) was calculated based on the principal component/factor analysis (PCA/FA). The results showed that biochar increased the exchangeable concentration of K, Mg, Ca, and pH value while reducing the exchangeable concentration of Fe, and Al, as well as the values of Cl-, H+, and exchange acidity in the soil. Biochar changed the electrical conductivity (EC) and Na parameters, increasing them in the first few measurements while decreasing them in the last measurements. Biochar increased the SQI of the tested soil, even with a low biochar application rate of 0.7% after 100 days of the experiment. The study suggests that biochar made from rice husk could be a potential amendment for ameliorating saline acid sulfate soil. \u0000

South East Asia, especially Vietnam, Sentinel-2 imagery has short re-visit cycle and observations tend to be contaminated with cloud and cloud shadow. Traditional cloud removal methods require close date multi-temporal data to avoid seasonal land cover changes. In this study, a method of integrating Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNN) and Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) was proposed. This machine learning model estimates the information loss over cloud contaminated areas on a single Sentinel-2 image. The results show that for images with cloud cover rate under 25%, our model can reconstruct cloudless images with PSNR (25 – 40 dB) and SSIM (0.86 – 0.93) compared to real clear images. On the other hand, with cloud cover rate up to 40%, the model performance will be affected heavily by the distribution of cloud and cloud shadow areas. By investigating DCNN and GAN, our method has proven to be an effective tool to remove cloudy images with low and medium rates, which enriches the clear optical remote sensing data sources for environment monitoring. \u0000

Mining wastewater with the high content of heavy metals often causes negative impacts on the ecosystems and human health. In this study, the capacity of using limestone, hydrolyzed rice husk as filter materials and the CWs planted with Caladium bicolor to treat iron and manganese in artifical wastewater treatment are evaluated. The wetland model has the size of length x width x height of 50 cm x 15 cm x 20 cm. 10 liters of the synthetic wastewater were used and initial Fe and Mn concentrations varied from 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 mg/L. The results showed that limestone and hydrolyzed rice husk with the weight ratio of 5 : 2.5 (kg) had good ability to remove Fe and Mn with treatment efficiencies of approximately 99.8% after 144 hours. During a 24-hour retention time, the Fe and Mn concentrations in the wastewater decreased rapidly in CWs and the initial Fe and Mn concentrations affected treatment performance. When the initial Fe and Mn concentrations were below 20 mg/L, treatment efficiencies of Fe and Mn reached about 99% after 144 hours in the CWs and Fe and Mn concentrations met the national regulation QCVN 40: 2011/BTNMT, column B.
