Meanwhile,theempiricalevidencefortheassociationbetweenpsychopathyandlyingissomewhatlimited.Inthepresentstudy, non-clinicalvolunteerscompletedameasureofpsychopathy,andwerethenbroughtinanexperimentalsituation(apuzzletask)in whichtheycouldopttolieforpotentialpersonalgain(i.e.monetary reward).Findingssuggestthat19%ofparticipants(i.e.31outof166)liedabouttheirperformanceinthepuzzletask,thusincreasingtheir likelihoodofgainingadditionalreward.Theselyingparticipantsscoredsigni fi cantly higher on psychopathy than did their honest peers. Thus, the fi ndings support the hypothesis that psychopathy is characterised by deceitful behaviour.
