Descriptions, illustrations, distri- bution maps and a key are given for the 18 Australian species. The tribe is endemic in Australia and comprises five genera, Dicrastylis, Lachnostachys, Mallophora, Newcastelia, Physopsis, and 48 species with 37 infraspecific taxa. The following new species are described: Dicrastylis brunnea, D. cordifolia, D. georgei, D. glauca, D. incana, D. linearifolia, D. micrantha, D. microphylla, D. morrisonii, D. obovata, D. petermannensis, D. sessilifolia, D. velutina, Mallophora rugosifolia, Newcastelia elliptica, N. interrupta and TV. velutina. The new combination of Dicrastylis corymbosa (= Mallophora corymbosa Endl.) is made. The affinities of the genera and species are discussed, and their distribution considered. A new key to the genera and species is provided and the revised description of each taxon is supplemented in most cases by a habit sketch of a flowering branch and analytical drawings of the flowers.","PeriodicalId":246712,"journal":{"name":"Brunonia","volume":"171 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133095897","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its taxonomic position is in subgenus Symphyomyrtus, series Viminales following the informal classification of eucalypts proposed by Pryor and Johnson. In adult characters it superficially resembles E. baeuerlenii F. Muell. but differs markedly from that species in its shortly petiolate and narrow-elliptical seedling and juvenile leaves and in its smaller and shortly pedicellate fruit. The species is known only from the vicinity of Mother Woila Mountain in Deua National Park, New South Wales. Evidence for recognition of this taxon was gathered from the comparative morphology of E. wilcoxii and E. baeuerlenii. The oil composition of adult leaves and isozyme analyses of seeds showed clear differences although the wood anatomy was not distinguishable between the two species. The ecology, distribution, taxonomic status, natural affinities and conservation status of E. wilcoxii are discussed.","PeriodicalId":246712,"journal":{"name":"Brunonia","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134598348","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

F1 hybrids of the two species were also produced to assist evaluation of a previous hypothesis of phantom hybrid origin. The Grampians populations were similar to E. cypellocarpa in adult morphology, but had distinctly different seedlings that were not the same as the F1 hybrids. The Anglesea population, although intermediate between E. cypellocarpa and E. goniocalyx in some adult characters, had the same seedling form, including root/shoot ratio, and the same bark type as the Grampians populations. The study provided no evidence to support the hypothesis of a phantom hybrid origin for the Grampians and Anglesea forms. A more parsimonious interpretation is evolution by the splitting of an ancestral taxon. The Grampians and Anglesea populations are described as E. alaticaulis sp. nov., with minor population variation being interpreted as a result of geographic disjunction.","PeriodicalId":246712,"journal":{"name":"Brunonia","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130081636","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
