For this purpose, Edward Said's seminal study Orientalism is applied as a methodical framework and source for critical theses. The paper debates urban conditions, music industry discourses as well as extra-musical factors that have been essential for the origination of the Orientalism trend. The main part, however, concentrates on the detailed analysis of two examples of Orientalism in popular music: the Pussycat Dolls' »Buttons« and Maroon 5's »Shiver«. The pieces on the CD representing the music of Bamako can only be understood on the background of the 700 years old tradition preserved by the Jelis, the bards of the Western Sudanic countries. The CD chosen as an example for the music of Kinshasa contains the newest creations by Mbilia Bel, who sings in the manner of Franco, the founder of the new music of Congo.
