For this purpose, Edward Said's seminal study Orientalism is applied as a methodical framework and source for critical theses. The paper debates urban conditions, music industry discourses as well as extra-musical factors that have been essential for the origination of the Orientalism trend. The main part, however, concentrates on the detailed analysis of two examples of Orientalism in popular music: the Pussycat Dolls' »Buttons« and Maroon 5's »Shiver«.
