However, cost and technological limitations make sparse wavelength conversion networks preferable. In this work, we propose a technique for wavelength converter placement under non-uniform traffic in the network. The algorithm that uses normalized cut based graph partitioning technique is extended for non-uniform traffic. A comparison of the performance under uniform and non-uniform traffic is given to highlight the effect of traffic on optimal placement. The algorithm is attractive due to lower complexity and efficiency.","PeriodicalId":245218,"journal":{"name":"The 13th IEEE Workshop on Local and Metropolitan Area Networks, 2004. A thorough view of a complete project of a network infrastructure is definitely more important than its single details. Among the many innovations introduced in the IP networks, an interesting issue is represented by enhanced architectures where services like telephony and video transmission are provided on the same infrastructure used for data traffic. At the same time, actual networks are heterogeneous in terms of access network technologies, end user's device and finally operating systems. In these new scenarios innovative and efficient management's approaches are needed. This paper describes a proposal to improve the management of different network scenarios. This work presents a \"partitioning algorithm\" and some of its possible practical applications in the field of shared LANs, full switched LANs, VLANs (virtual local area networks) configuration, and in WLANs (wireless local area networks) environments.","PeriodicalId":245218,"journal":{"name":"The 13th IEEE Workshop on Local and Metropolitan Area Networks, 2004. For future wireless systems, there are activities to integrate the heterogeneous wireless accesses into all the IP network using the IP technologies. However, the enhanced IP technologies face addressing and handover related issues for mobility management and need security considerations for wireless access. We proposed the mobile Ethernet architecture based on Ethernet technologies, which provides layer 2 mobility solution, and discussed the IPv4/lPv6 independence and addressing simplicity. The architecture is scalable by reducing extra traffic in the metropolitan area where the various wireless accesses are available. In this paper, we propose a virtual MAC address scheme on the mobile Ethernet as a unique identifier of a mobile device and present a handover mechanism by the address scheme to realize fast movement across different wireless accesses within the network. We also evaluate signaling traffic by using a simulation related to mobility management on wireless access and show that the architecture based on the address scheme has scalability when it supports fast and frequent movements of mobile devices.","PeriodicalId":245218,"journal":{"name":"The 13th IEEE Workshop on Local and Metropolitan Area Networks, 2004. IEEE 802.11e is an emerging supplement to the IEEE 802.11 standard in supporting quality-of-service (QoS). It introduces EDCF and HCF, and the former is the focus of this research. In this paper, the EDCF parameters' influences on the performance are studied. A new algorithm, called CW-EDCF, is proposed. This scheme dynamically adjusts the sizes of CWmin, CWmax and the CW parameter of the high priority traffic class, taking into account both the applications requirement; and network conditions. We compare it with the EDCF scheme through simulations. Results show that CW-EDCF outperforms the basic EDCF.","PeriodicalId":245218,"journal":{"name":"The 13th IEEE Workshop on Local and Metropolitan Area Networks, 2004. The intent of the study is to characterize the behavior of the network in terms of throughput, packet loss rate, and average delay under different degrees of network loading and prioritization profiles. It is shown that the quantitative results can be derived using the Smartbits network analyzer. Based on the measurement results obtained, a QoS model using the weighted fair queuing algorithm was developed for the CMTS scheduler. Simulation results from OPNET demonstrated a close match between this model and the measured results. The empirical results and QoS model presented in this paper is useful for researchers and network designers who wish to understand the practical characteristics of the DOCSIS network.","PeriodicalId":245218,"journal":{"name":"The 13th IEEE Workshop on Local and Metropolitan Area Networks, 2004. MIMO has been proven as an effective method to achieve this. Previously, the focus of MIMO-OFDM research in high performance metropolitan area network (HIPERMAN) systems was on space time coding (STC) and beamforming. Recently, multi-user detection (MUD) has emerged as a novel approach in MIMO-OFDM-based HIPERMAN systems. In this paper, we have proposed a new MAC design, which includes the new and flexible MAC frame structure and an efficient dynamic resource allocation algorithm, in order to accommodate the MUD techniques in uplink transmission in HIPERMAN systems. The performance of the new MAC design has been evaluated via simulation means. The simulation results show that the new MAC design based on MUD can significantly increase the system capacity.","PeriodicalId":245218,"journal":{"name":"The 13th IEEE Workshop on Local and Metropolitan Area Networks, 2004. However, the bandwidth available to people has been increasing rapidly with the advent of broadband and wideband access. The result is that many new services like voice and video are now desired that requires far better QoS than what the \"best effort\" IP can support. Two new innovations were discussed in this paper. First, flow routing permits IP to support all the ATM QoS features like guaranteed rate and delay with lower cost and higher reliability. Second, the new additions to IPv6 now in the standards track permits users to signal at line rate their requirement for guaranteed rates, get rate feedback for TCP, and add priorities for delay and preemption. These QoS features along with IPv6's virus, spam protecting security, and full terminal mobility makes the IPv6 a compelling alternative in the near future.","PeriodicalId":245218,"journal":{"name":"The 13th IEEE Workshop on Local and Metropolitan Area Networks, 2004.
