The fog and smoke are generated and controlled homogeneously along the indoor atmospheric chamber of length 6 m. The experimental results from the selected wavelengths are compared for the continuous spectrum range (0.6 μm <; λ <; 1.55 μm) attenuation. The results show that, unlike the fog attenuation, the resultant smoke attenuation linearly decreases from the visible towards the near infrared (NIR) range from dense to light smoke conditions.","PeriodicalId":244805,"journal":{"name":"2012 International Workshop on Optical Wireless Communications (IWOW)","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133335097","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The well-known high-impedance front-end design of an optical receiver is extended by combining multiple PIN photodiode-FET circuits with optimized equalizers in order to achieve a better SNR at the output of the receiver. The receiver is optimum in a sense that it reduces the effective equivalent input referred noise current spectral density by a factor propertional to the number of PIN-FET combinations.","PeriodicalId":244805,"journal":{"name":"2012 International Workshop on Optical Wireless Communications (IWOW)","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115505473","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Time and spatially variable distribution of the refractive index as well as different weather conditions result in fluctuation and attenuation of the optical beam. The presence on-board of remote sensing instruments with ever increasing accuracy and resolution fuels the need for transmitting huge amounts of data. This contribution investigates the impairments to optical beam propagation due to clouds by exploiting concurrent radiosonde observation (RAOBS) data collected in three European sites. Long-term yearly statistics of path attenuation are calculated by first discriminating between different cloud types and, afterwards, by integrating their contribution to the total attenuation along each vertical profile of RAOBS data. Finally, the effectiveness of dual-site diversity schemes is evaluated: results confirm that this approach is necessary to achieve an acceptable system availability.","PeriodicalId":244805,"journal":{"name":"2012 International Workshop on Optical Wireless Communications (IWOW)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125771627","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, atmospheric optical turbulence generates optical power fluctuations at the receiver that can degrade communications with fading events, especially, in high data rate links. A way to mitigate FSO link outages can be to add a coding to communications. Nevertheless, in order to study innovative solutions (software or hardware) and to improve the FSO link performance it needs accurate testing models. In this paper we describe an accurate time-correlated channel model able to predict random temporal fluctuations of optical signal irradiance caused by optical turbulence. Moreover, concerning the same channel, we also report simulation results on the error mitigation performance of Luby-Transform, Raptor, and RaptorQ codes.","PeriodicalId":244805,"journal":{"name":"2012 International Workshop on Optical Wireless Communications (IWOW)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125249230","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we investigate the use of MIMO in the design of luminaires supporting VLC and, specifically, in enabling localization and high data rate services. Localization and transmission appear as two different problems in the communication system; however, the former is helpful to understand which is the diversity degree that the system can adopt, in order to achieve the required performance in terms of BER and data rate. Finally, we consider also how different users can access the Internet by means of a TDMA-like access scheme.","PeriodicalId":244805,"journal":{"name":"2012 International Workshop on Optical Wireless Communications (IWOW)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133263119","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we investigate both illumination and communication properties of OLED based lighting configurations in a typical room. Two lighting designs are introduced and compared by deterministic and Monte-Carlo simulations. These show that there is considerable potential to optimize both the illumination levels (and hence the received signal to noise ratio for communications) and that sufficient bandwidth is available (when considering that of the OLED) for communications.","PeriodicalId":244805,"journal":{"name":"2012 International Workshop on Optical Wireless Communications (IWOW)","volume":"131 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121391296","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Under the luminaire-as-transmitter model, wireless communication is achieved by modulating LED(s) that must simultaneously meet the illumination mission. Illumination requirements include maintaining energy efficiency, constant color and intensity control whereas communications requirements are speed and BER goals. In this paper we explore the perceptual qualities of visible light from LED luminaires to render color. We then propose a novel modulation scheme for visible light communications which can maintain constant perceived ambient lighting. By using D>;3 LEDs, multiple lighting states that are indistinguishable to humans but are distinguishable to an electronic receiver can be achieved. Changes between these states are detected as intensity modulation in different wavelength bands.","PeriodicalId":244805,"journal":{"name":"2012 International Workshop on Optical Wireless Communications (IWOW)","volume":"114 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121513223","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
