A FEMINIST READING ON VIOLENCE AND OTHERNESS","authors":"Elena Popa","doi":"10.31178/cicsa.2021.7.2","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.31178/cicsa.2021.7.2","url":null,"abstract":"Neo-Assyrian reliefs are known to depict various types of violent acts performed by the conquerors against their defeated enemies. The visual material speaks volumes about Assyrian state ideology, and about how the Assyrian elite viewed their adversaries. The latter should be submitted to all kinds of atrocities to emphasize the king’s glory and the greatness of the god Assur. The reliefs usually depict gruesome scenes, but the vast majority of those who suffer such a fate consists of enemy soldiers and leaders, and are almost exclusively men. In Neo-Assyrian war reliefs, women are seldom represented and they are not shown as victims of the atrocious conduct of the conquering armies. Nonetheless, there is a striking representation of violence against women depicted in the so-called relief BM 124927 from Ashurbanipal’s Northern Palace, hosted nowadays by the British Museum. Even though the ripping of enemy pregnant women seems to be a topos in the Hebrew Bible, it is rarely encountered in the Mesopotamian area which makes this relief even more interesting. In this article, I will try to discuss why such an atrocity was committed against the Arab women, what makes them different, and why they are the only female victims of the Assyrian rampage depicted in the visual sources.","PeriodicalId":244215,"journal":{"name":"Revista CICSA online, Serie Nouă","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117253606","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Starting from Galen's work, De Subtiliante Diaeta, we will try to see how the diet, especially one rich in liquids, modifies the ratio between the four constituent elements of the organism and therefore influences the individual`s relationship with their water and food supply needed for proper bodily functions.In drawing up this analysis we will pursue both a historiographical approach, regarding Galen's theory, as well as a systematic approach to the primary source. The relationship a man has with the water he drinks or extracts from the consumed food is approached by all written cultures, from the beginning of history to the present day, water being the main necessary element of survival. As many of the Ancient, Medieval and Pre-Modern conceptions have their root in the humoral theories of Hippocrates and Galen, the issue becomes even more relevant as drinking water was not easily accessible (compared to the Contemporary period in developed countries), and water-rich foods provided a great supply of liquids.","PeriodicalId":244215,"journal":{"name":"Revista CICSA online, Serie Nouă","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129821274","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

According to the answers they give to questions such as whom the Attic painters intended to depict and what were the actual sources of inspiration for the „Scythian‟ archers, the modern essays of interpretation range from a „photographic‟ view to a „structuralist‟ perspective. However, the methods used until now for analysing the relevant pots are deemed not to be enough and a new methodology, inspired by semiotics and linguistics, is proposed.","PeriodicalId":244215,"journal":{"name":"Revista CICSA online, Serie Nouă","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130277568","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They were the principles by which the Mesopotamians guided themselves, be they kings or simple citizens of the Empire. Time was considered to be a primordial element, being treated with the utmost respect, and, was perceived in a counter-intuitive way, as if the past was the future, and vice-versa. Time allowed the Mesopotamians to be one of the first history-oriented civilization, as they always used the events in the past to avoid mistakes in the present, and in the same time to pay respect to their ancestors. For them, time was not linear, but cyclic, and everything that had a beginning had to have an ending. Since time in the beginning was at its purest condition, we can assume that the end of time should also bring this purity and serenity back. Space was also a very important concept that created the Mesopotamian civilization, being the instrument par excellence of the royal ideology, as the Mesopotamians always defined themselves in opposition with the enemies, by an interior-exterior/good-bad discourse. Space was also important as it allowed self-knowledge, and self-improvement by means of voyages, that very often transgressed the limits of the known world.","PeriodicalId":244215,"journal":{"name":"Revista CICSA online, Serie Nouă","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117120010","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

During this period, the Bulgarian territories were occupied by the Empire, which facilitated the penetration and wide distribution of Sgraffito Wares. The South Bulgarian lands had always been a buffer zone and a way of transmission for Byzantine culture, goods, and influence. Sgraffito vessels are discovered not only in Bulgarian medieval towns and fortresses but also in small villages, convents, and seasonal settlements. The sgraffito plates found in them find exact parallels in Byzantine centres like Corinth, Athens, Sparta, Pergamon and, of course, the capital of Constantinople. Furthermore, some of the specimens have no analogue, and there is indirect evidence that somewhere in today’s South Bulgaria, there used to be local sgraffito production centres. This work will present and review all of the published materials from the territory of today’s Bulgaria, as well as some unpublished sgraffito pottery from South Bulgaria’s museums.","PeriodicalId":244215,"journal":{"name":"Revista CICSA online, Serie Nouă","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124879076","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Here were founded legendary cities like Miletus, Priene, Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Adramyttium or Troy. All these “new world” cities were different in many aspects from the origin of their inhabitants to the products they commercialized, but they had one big thing in common-water. During their prosperity apex these cities had either sea exit or river access but in the present day we found their ruins strained on land. These dramatic changes were caused by the vertical and lateral displacement of the numerous faults in the area. Anatolia is one of the most active tectonic areas on Earth which gives it a high mobility in terms of water bodies and shore line configuration. In order to calculate how much the shore line migrated since then, we have compiled GIS data, geological maps, archaeological reports, urban plans and ancient sources. We have seen that the shore withdrawn between several hundred meters (most common) to almost 30 km (in the Meander river delta) while the vertical displacement varies between several centimeters to several meters. The tectonic movements are neither uniform nor continuous and the tension released on faults through earthquakes can cause sudden topographical changes and physical damages of the urban areas. These events happened often in the past and continue to happen nowadays influencing the modern cities.","PeriodicalId":244215,"journal":{"name":"Revista CICSA online, Serie Nouă","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117076838","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
