The framework, called end-to-end media paths, provides a new approach for building multimedia applications from component pieces. Based on input from the user and resource requirements from the media object, the system first discovers the sequence of nodes (end-to-end path) that both connect the source device to the sink device and possess sufficient resources to play the object. It then configures the individual nodes along this path with the modules (path segment) that implement the service.","PeriodicalId":243728,"journal":{"name":"2001 IEEE Open Architectures and Network Programming Proceedings. The active application is reliable multicast with congestion control; the platform comprises the Bowman Node Operating System and the Composable Active Network Elements (CANEs) Execution Environment. The importance of the work stems from the lessons it provides about the design and implementation of active platforms in general and Bowman/CANEs in particular. For example, our experience shows that timer-driven active node processing is as important as packet-arrival-driven processing. Thus, execution environments cannot focus exclusively on forwarding, but must also provide efficient timers and allow timer handlers the same capabilities as packet-driven computations. Other areas in which the implementation provides insight include service decomposition approaches for active applications and information sharing among service components.","PeriodicalId":243728,"journal":{"name":"2001 IEEE Open Architectures and Network Programming Proceedings. These custom network services can be deployed by the user inside the packets themselves. Furthermore, the custom network services require that the infrastructure performs much more sophisticated operations on packets than the traditional forwarding. Consequently, there are heightened concerns from users and network operators about security. We discuss security requirements and issues in active networks with respect to authentication and authorization in a node. We describe our prototype implementation of a solution to those issues. We go on to describe a security architecture derived from our experience and relate our prototype to the architecture.","PeriodicalId":243728,"journal":{"name":"2001 IEEE Open Architectures and Network Programming Proceedings. This paper studies the active networking approach using the Openet programmable networking platform. Openet comprises ORE (Oplet Runtime Environment) and hierarchical services from low-level systems to high-level applications, and provides a neutral service-based programmability to network devices. Moreover, Openet can have customer network services including active networks based services deployed on current commercial network platforms. We demonstrate the active networking with commercial network devices by deploying the active network service ANTS onto the Accelar routing switches. The performance of active network communication is examined by the experiment in an Accelar-routed active net and compared with regular non-active network communication. The experimental result reveals that Java network I/O is a bottleneck of enhancing capsule processing capability and ends up a look at what active network services are applicable to current commercial network platforms. Finally we present observations and future works about active networking through the Openet platform.","PeriodicalId":243728,"journal":{"name":"2001 IEEE Open Architectures and Network Programming Proceedings. This flexible architecture facilitates the deployment of new network protocols and services. However, the programmable nature of a network also raises serious safety and security concerns. These concerns must be addressed before programmable networks can be deployed. One particular security question is how we can limit what resources and data active extensions can access on the router. While existing operating systems address this question for end-points and servers, routers have been designed to perform a different task, namely forwarding packets, and the existing OS solutions turn out to be inadequate for routers. We look at how we can restrict active extensions' access to link bandwidth and data traffic. Our solution is based on access control lists that are used to check all active extensions' operations that may affect the use of link bandwidth, or may involve access to user traffic. We implemented these mechanisms in Darwin, an example of a programmable network.","PeriodicalId":243728,"journal":{"name":"2001 IEEE Open Architectures and Network Programming Proceedings. This work has produced positive results: a competitive mobile agent platform was built, the run-time benefits of mobile agents were proved, and our industrial partners have developed practical applications that are being integrated into commercial products. However, despite the positive results, we feel that mobile agent technology is still not ready to enter the path of mainstream software development. In our perspective, one of the main reasons for this situation arises from the traditional approach to mobile agent technology. This approach, based on the familiar concept of the mobile-agent distributed platform as an extension of the operating system, focuses too much on the mobile agents and associated issues (mobility, agent lifecycle, security, coordination, etc.) and provides poor support for the development of applications where mobile agents are just one of several available technologies. Learning from past experience, we are now working on a new approach where the focus is brought back to the applications and mobile agents become just one the tools available to develop distributed systems. This provides a much lighter framework for application-based mobile agent systems. This paper presents the lessons learned from our previous project and discusses the new concept we are developing: application-centric mobile agent systems.","PeriodicalId":243728,"journal":{"name":"2001 IEEE Open Architectures and Network Programming Proceedings. With the emergence of new application domains, such as multimedia and real-time applications, flexible support of QoS and real-time requirements becomes a major challenge. Reconfigurable bindings and policy driven binding protocols are the major means in the MULTE framework to support these requirements. Our experience with flexible protocol configuration has shown that the above requirements cannot be solved only by dynamic (re-)configuration of communication protocols. Additionally, flexibility in establishing and managing bindings is necessary. We have implemented a toolkit that allows configurable signalling, including tasks such as QoS negotiation, resource reservation, connection management, monitoring, etc. The toolkit is used in the MULTE-ORB to support various functional and non-functional application requirements.","PeriodicalId":243728,"journal":{"name":"2001 IEEE Open Architectures and Network Programming Proceedings. As a result, many important network functions cannot be optimized due to lack of sufficient support from the network. The growing need for quality guaranteed services brought on suggestions to add more computational power to the network elements. This paper studies the algorithmic power of networks whose routers are capable of performing complex tasks. It presents a new model that captures the hop-by-hop datagram forwarding mechanism deployed in today's IP networks, as well as the ability to perform complex computations in network elements as proposed in the active networks paradigm. Using our framework, we present and analyze distributed algorithms for basic problems that arise in the control and management of IP networks. These problems include: route discovery, message dissemination, topology discovery, and bottleneck detection. Our results prove that, although adding computation power to the routers increases the message delay, it shortens the completion time for many tasks. The suggested model can be used to evaluate the contribution of added features to a router, and allows the formal comparison of different proposed architectures.","PeriodicalId":243728,"journal":{"name":"2001 IEEE Open Architectures and Network Programming Proceedings. In our approach, senders and receivers use ephemeral state probes to determine where to inject functionality. A special function that duplicates packets matching a particular pattern and forwards them to a specific destination is then instantiated at the desired network location. Our approach eliminates the need for sophisticated multicast routing protocols and gives the end-systems control over the multicast service, allowing the application to tailor the service to its needs. At the same time, our approach creates efficient forwarding paths by using ephemeral state probes to determine (only) the relevant aspects of the network and group topology. We present two multicast implementations: one builds a multicast tree with centralized control, another provides the traditional IP multicast abstraction. Both implementations can be done in a simple and scalable manner with minimal added functionality in the routers beyond unicast forwarding.","PeriodicalId":243728,"journal":{"name":"2001 IEEE Open Architectures and Network Programming Proceedings. The consequence of these two trends is that it is becoming increasingly difficult to map the services onto the underlying hardware. Our response to this situation is to define a virtual router architecture, called VERA, that hides the hardware details from the forwarding functions.
