In September 2020, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) approved Order 2222 that opens wholesale electricity markets to small capacity DERs. The benefit from this new FERC Order 2222 is that DERs, such as rooftop solar panels and batteries, will be able to participate in regional electricity markets and provide grid services. Meanwhile, the planning and operation strategies of DERs are facing new challenges to account for the impact of the wholesale market with numerous uncertainty factors. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a new planning and retrofitting model for long-term commercial building that considers both DER investment and market participation. Specifically, we explore the capability of implementing DERs for grid services. The effectiveness of the proposed model is validated using real-world data. Simulation results also validate that participating in grid services can significantly increase revenues through appropriate building energy management and shorten the payback period of DER investments.","PeriodicalId":241987,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE/PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition (T&D)","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124888298","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As optimal network configuration depends on system operating states (e.g., loads at each node), existing analytical and population-based approaches need to repeat the entire analysis and computation to find the optimal network configuration with a change in system operating states. Contrary to this, if properly trained, deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based DNR can determine optimal or nearoptimal configuration quickly even with changes in system states. In this paper, a Deep Q Learning-based framework is proposed for the optimal DNR to improve reliability of the system. An optimization problem is formulated with an objective function that minimizes the average curtailed power. Constraints of the optimization problem are radial topology constraint and all nodes traversing constraint. The distribution network is modeled as a graph and the optimal network configuration is determined by searching for an optimal spanning tree. The optimal spanning tree is the spanning tree with the minimum value of the average curtailed power. The effectiveness of the proposed framework is demonstrated through several case studies on 33-node and 69node distribution test systems.","PeriodicalId":241987,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE/PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition (T&D)","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116819224","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These resources have been driving changes in industry paradigms, grid codes, standards, and recommended practices. One established utility system design is effective grounding for ground fault temporary overvoltages (GFTOV). This was derived entirely on the premise of a traditional grid, with utilities conforming their practices over the decades with the expectation of this topology to continue. As IBRs proliferate, traditional practices are becoming ineffective in depicting expected behavior. As a result, management of GFTOV becomes critically dependent on IBR control algorithms and on the negative sequence impedance of the aggregate load of a distribution feeder. This requires a shift in direction for transmission and distribution operators. This paper includes an electric utility's lessons learned in the interconnection of a range of large scale IBRs to its distribution grid. Two case studies are presented to illustrate the drawbacks of conventional practices. It also exemplifies how the utility manages the problem and presents a forward-looking perspective on the evolution of rules, standards, and practices.","PeriodicalId":241987,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE/PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition (T&D)","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121211508","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Real-time simulation of power networks is a mature industry, with big players dominating the market. However, the implementation is limited to dedicated high-end hardware and software. This effort benefits the researcher and small-scale user who may wish to explore real-time applications without making a large investment. The approach offers further insight into the workings of real-time computing, in particular parallel processing using methods similar to the published description of the SSN method developed by OPAL-RT. The implementation of the developed method on a PC with multiple cores requires very little resources besides MATLAB/Simulink and a C++ development environment. The method was tested on the IEEE 123 bus system and found to require only three processing cores, where previous attempts on dedicated real-time hardware required five cores.","PeriodicalId":241987,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE/PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition (T&D)","volume":"222 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126266074","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These situations, for example, are caused by weather instability, causing the electric grid to be affected by heavy rains, intense wind gusts, and lightning. In addition, traffic accidents, contact with objects on the network and irregular loads are unpredictable situations for the grid protection. Even though the robustness of the protection systems, many fault cases are still difficult to be detected. This is the case of a fault with a high contact impedance caused by a broken conductor. In this paper, it is proposed a solution to detect Broken Conductor (BC) fault considering the quantity of neutral current pick-ups during a High Impedance Fault (HIF). The methodology basically applies the SEF function monitoring in a time box window, where a pick-up counting is processed into that window. The results presented the analysis of 100 BC oscillographs cases, showing their applicability for HIF protection in the electrical power system.","PeriodicalId":241987,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE/PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition (T&D)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126457528","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper focuses on low voltage AC systems (LVAC) because they present various challenges: they have high upgrade costs and a very large number of nodes. To obtain the cost-optimal NWA portfolio (DER type, location and size) for LVAC upgrade deferral without increasing the computational burden, we introduce an incremental injection batch runs approach to calculate sensitivity-based values for each node. Ranking the nodes based on this value allows us to decrease the problem size by excluding bottom-ranked locations. Further, we use the sensitivities to form an optimal power flow whose output is the optimal DER portfolio and corresponding optimal sites and sizes. A case study based on an actual utility meshed distribution network has been presented to demonstrate the proposed framework.","PeriodicalId":241987,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE/PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition (T&D)","volume":"87 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131929553","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The inverter sets the magnitude and frequency by generating its own frequency reference. It controls the positive- and negative-sequence voltages separately to mitigate voltage unbalance at its terminals. The current limiter of the inverter operates in the abc-frame to regulate the unbalanced current effectively. The performance of the grid-forming inverter is evaluated by blackstarting the islanded microgrid with a motor load. The inverter aims to achieve the following objectives during a blackstart process: 1) control the grid voltage at the rated value, 2) limit the inverter current during motor starting, and 3) maintain balanced voltage. The microgrid and grid-forming inverter are modeled and simulated in the PSCAD/EMTDC environment. The simulation results show that the grid-forming inverter is able to blackstart an islanded microgrid and maintain balanced voltage while supplying unbalanced loads. It is also shown that the inverter could start a motor while limiting the associated inrush current.","PeriodicalId":241987,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE/PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition (T&D)","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131964733","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For those POD controls, model-based control design method has been widely implemented with wide-area feedback signals from phasor measurement units (PMU). However, the model accuracy of a large realistic power system can hardly be guaranteed, which will finally impact the POD damping performance. In this paper, a measurement-based method is proposed for POD design using High Voltage Direct Current links (HVDC) to realize the coordinated control of both LFO and SSO. For each type of oscillations, a band-pass filter is added to avoid the interactions between different modes. Case studies are carried out on the Great Britain 36-bus power system model with multiple HVDC links in DIgSILENT/PowerFactory. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed PODs are effective in damping inter-area LFO and SSO simultaneously.","PeriodicalId":241987,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE/PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition (T&D)","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131619406","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The flexibility offered by the heat pumps (HP) and increasing the renewable energy sources (RES) share can play a key role in providing cheap heat without affecting the customer comfort preferences. This paper proposed a genetic algorithm based optimal heat consumption of individual households as a pool for minimizing the energy cost. The smart models of heat pump (HP) and phase change material (PCM) based heat storage systems are developed. These models are simulated for a cluster of 20 households having solar installations with different heat consumption behaviors that are located in a selected rural area i.e., Skive municipality in North Jutland, Denmark. The thermal units are intelligently coordinated by utilizing the electricity during periods of low price and excess production from local renewable resources including solar-photovoltaic (PV), thereby estimating the optimal heat consumption profiles. A proper option to harness DER capabilities is their aggregation to offer ancillary service products (ASP) in the wholesale market. This option is backed by FERC Order 2222 requiring planning of the ISOs across the United States for participation of DER aggregators in the ASP markets. However, the DERs are spread across distribution grids which impedes tracking their ASP delivery. In this paper, we propose a blockchain-based framework to bring about the visibility of DERs to ISOs by secure recording and verification of the monetary, energy and ASP transactions made among the ISO, aggregator and DERs. Our major focus is on a type of DER named distributed prosumer (DP) which is comprised of rooftop solar generation, battery storage, electric vehicle charger and controllable electric loads. We conducted a case study where the simulation results demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the framework in making DERs visible and tractable to the ISO.","PeriodicalId":241987,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE/PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition (T&D)","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129364676","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
