Meliopoulos","doi":"10.1109/APT.1993.686906","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/APT.1993.686906","url":null,"abstract":"This paper describes the hardware, software, and testing procedures using the smart ground meter, developed under EPRI sponsorship. The functions of the meter are discussed and examples of recent nieasurements are presented using a prototype unit. The instrument injects a transient electric current between the ground under measurement and an auxiliary ground, and it measures ground pokntial differences (GPDs) around the ground under measurement. 'I'he GI'D measurements are processed with software which rejects external noise using correlation methods. Subsequently, estimation methods are used to extract thc ground potential rise and ground impedance. 'I'he final result is the ground inipedance versus frequency in a user selected frequency range. The data collected with the smart ground meter can be utilized for a number of applications, such as estimation of maximum ground potential rise, touch and step voltage measurements, soil resistivity evaluation, etc.","PeriodicalId":241767,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The comparison focuses on: initiation requirements, flexibility to increase the load, load modelling, reactive power generation limits, speed, accuracy and convergence robustness. The sclienac consists of a series capacitor conncctcd in parallcl with a thyristor-controlled rcaclor. Tlic cquations reveal tlie changes in the overall series cornpcnsalion by varying the thyristor firing angle. Additionally, the equations allow a means of calculating tlie cxpected compensation level for a given system. The eKccts of changes in the circuit parameters using the equations is also iwcsligaled, along with tlic harnionics gcncratcd by the cllyristor-controlled reactor. The steady state and transient characteristics of the advanced scrics cornpensation tecliriiquc wcre further studicd on a circuit model. The cquations developed rcveal that tlicre is a gradual approach in excess of 10 cycles toward a steady state condition for higher levels of series compensation.
