Control authority in the factory is typically allocated to three levels: the machine, cell, and system. The machine controllers must be reconfigurable to process different parts, the cell controllers must be reconfigurable to adapt to different part flows, and the system level controller must be reconfigurable to adapt to new parts in the system. In this paper, we describe the reconfigurable control infrastructure that we have developed at the University of Michigan's reconfigurable factory testbed. We then show through example how this infrastructure enables the real-time reconfiguration of the controllers at the machine and cell levels to adapt to quality problems and unexpected faults","PeriodicalId":241388,"journal":{"name":"2005 IEEE Conference on Emerging Technologies and Factory Automation","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115138588","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Each neural observer is tuned to a particular fault and predicts, using its embedded model, the expected values for the sensor readings. The residuals, the difference between the sensor readings and the predicted readings, are used as fault indicators. Each neural observer is based on a multi-layer perceptron feed-forward neural network with external feedback connections, and an adjustable gain. The focus of this work is on diagnosis of parametric faults on process components, by means of analyzing the residuals. The proposed FDI technique has been implemented on a simulation model of a DC motor under closed-loop control. In this context, this paper describes and evaluates two design patterns, developed by the authors for distributed real-time Java software, that are able to overcome the limitations imposed by RTSJ. The first pattern, RTJ-leader-follower; is a RTSJ-compliant version of the well-known leader/follower pattern. The second pattern, called scoped tunnels, provides a new communication mechanism for RTSJ threads executing in different and incompatible memory areas, thus making possible the realization of the standard pattern half-sync/half-async for efficient network I/O handling. The paper presents both a qualitative and quantitative evaluation of these patterns, showing, above all, that they are able to provide a safe execution environment","PeriodicalId":241388,"journal":{"name":"2005 IEEE Conference on Emerging Technologies and Factory Automation","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121037955","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Starting from an analysis of industrial communication requirements and an overview of the principles of IEEE 1394, it will be shown that also other advantages make IEEE 1394 a promising network for industrial use. The following sections describe the 1394AP protocol in detail and explain how to implement the necessary hardware and software based on general purpose architecture of an IEEE 1394 embedded node.
