{"title":"Resurrection of the snailfish genus Allinectes (Teleostei: Cottiformes: Liparidae) for seven North Pacific species, including descriptions of three new species from Alaska.","authors":"James Wilder Orr","doi":"10.11646/zootaxa.5609.3.1","DOIUrl":"10.11646/zootaxa.5609.3.1","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>The subgenus Allinectes was established by Jordan & Evermann (1898) for the single species Careproctus ectenes. I elevate Allinectes to genus, based on the elongate anterior dorsal-fin rays followed by a distinct notch found in both sexes of all its members. With A. ectenes, I allocate six additional species to Allinectes: A. curilanus, A. attenuatus, A. pycnosoma, and three new species, described herein. The three new species, A. istiophorus, A. busbyi, and A. nanstanorum, are described on the basis of individuals collected in the Aleutian Islands and Bering Sea during fisheries resource assessment surveys conducted by the U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service. Each is most similar to A. ectenes from which they are distinguished by a dark peritoneum, lower counts of vertebrae and dorsal- and anal-fin rays, and several morphometric characters, including longer gill slits, a larger pelvic disk, and typically shorter distances from disk to anus. Allinectes istiophorus is distinguished from Allinectes nanstanorum by having a paler body, pale stomach, deeper and more robust body, and longer first dorsal-fin ray. Allinectes busbyi differs from both A. nanstanorum and A. istiophorus by its strongly protruding snout and robust body. Described from 88 specimens, Allinectes istiophorus is found widely within the Aleutian Islands, from west of Attu Island in the west to north of Akutan Island in the east, and in the Bering Sea west and south of the Pribilof Islands at depths of 117 to 762 m. The deeper dwelling Allinectes nanstanorum is described from two specimens found in the Bering Sea on the upper continental slope near the Pribilof Islands at depths of 866 and 1172 m. Allinectes busbyi is described from a single specimen collected in the central Aleutian Islands in Seguam Pass at 458 m depth. Allinectes curilanus is redescribed from the types collected from the Kuril Islands and 30 additional specimens, all taken in the Aleutian Islands from west of Attu Island to the Islands of Four Mountains in the east at depths of 240 to 471 m. The first species, S. gimlii sp. nov., is distinguished by its dorsally setose body with short and relatively thick setae, presence of a subminor cheliped, the morphology of its major and subminor chelipeds, and a small rostrum and orbital teeth. The Vietnamese species, S. secundus sp. nov., is characterized by the specific armature of its major and subminor chelipeds. The latter species also exhibits a unique asymmetry in the sixth pleuron, with one side possessing a complete articulated flap and the other an incomplete one. However, recent integrative taxonomic studies on the species have revealed its underestimated diversity and new species previously masquerading under this nomen in mainland Southeast Asia. This prompted the re-examination of a specimen identified as S. stellatus from Borneo, and morphological analyses revealed that it is not conspecific with topotypic specimens of the species from Peninsular Malaysia or other congeners of the complex, and is therefore described herein as new. Sphenomorphus striatafaucium sp. nov. can be differentiated from its congeners by a combination of known adult SVL of 57.4 mm; frontal scale undivided; prefrontals in broad contact; four supraoculars; two loreals; eight superciliaries; no enlarged, clear, central window in lower eyelid; seven or eight supralabials; six infralabials; three pairs of chinshields; 24 midbody scale rows; 62 paravertebrals, not wider than other dorsals; 66 ventrals; two enlarged precloacals; 19 subdigital lamellae on fourth toe; and bold and distinct striped pattern on the chin and throat. The discovery of S. striatafaucium sp. nov. increases the number of endemic Sphenomorphus skinks in Borneo to 13 species. The discovery underscores the underestimated diversity of reptile and amphibian species in Borneo, and the need for more concerted efforts to conduct fieldwork and systematic studies to not only improve the understanding of their relationships and ecologies, but also better protect their habitats that are increasingly threatened by anthropogenic pressures. The new species is very similar to its related species, especially D. tianlongi Wang & Zhou, 2019 and D. liyingbingi Huang & Chen, 2013, in external characters, but can be clearly distinguished by male genital features. The new species is differentiated from other known species of the subgenus Euthraulus Barnard, 1932 by the following combination of characters: posterior margin of abdominal terga I-VII with a dark brown band; tergalius I absent; dorsal lamella of tergalius VII with two terminal processes; costal projection of hind wing acute; segment I of gonostylus slender without inner-apical angle; penis slender, elongated, little longer than ½ of gonostylus length. Comparison of larvae and male imaginal characters of known species of Indian Choroterpes (Euthraulus) are provided. The novel taxon differs from other species in the genus in colouration and form of its male genitalia, especially the shape of the anal tube and the number and shape of the spinal processes of the phallotheca. The records from Curaçao, a record from Panama, and iNaturalist records from Costa Rica comprise the southernmost records of the genus, which was hitherto not formally recorded south of Guatemala and Puerto Rico.
