In 2022 five additional species were described, all of them from the Espinhaço Mountain Range, in the states of Minas Gerais and Bahia, Brazil. During an aquatic insect survey in three states in the Northeast region of Brazil, we collected two new species of Ephydrolithus in the states of Bahia, Ceará and Pernambuco, one of the new species collected in the two latter states, represent the first record of this genus outside the Espinhaço Mountain Range, expanding its distribution to other Brazilian states. The objective of this study is to describe two new species of Ephydrolithus based on both male and female specimens. We also provide an updated identification key and distributional maps for the genus.","PeriodicalId":24072,"journal":{"name":"Zootaxa","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2024-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140682749","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The species is widely distributed in all natural zones of the country but occurs sporadically. Almost everywhere in Ukraine E. hirtus tends to decrease in abundance due to the reduction of pastures, a habitat to which this species is strictly specialized. Here we review all known records of E. hirtus in Ukraine summing up its distribution and bionomics in the country. We reflect on the possible causes of the population decline of this species and provide recommendations for its conservation in Ukraine and throughout its entire distribution range.","PeriodicalId":24072,"journal":{"name":"Zootaxa","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2024-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140685626","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Additionally, at least three undescribed species from the Southwest have been incorrectly identified as A. glauca. The holotype of A. glauca has not been located. Since A. glauca is presently used to refer to multiple species, a neotype is designated which places A. glauca into synonymy with Calyptoproctus marmoratus. We establish a new genus, Scaralina, into which it is placed, giving the new combination Scaralina marmorata (Spinola), along with three southwestern, one Texan, and ten Mesoamerican taxa, named here as new species: S. aethrinsula, S. chapina, S. cristata, S. durango, S. gigantea, S. hawksi, S. metcalfi, S. monzoni, S. obfusca, S. obrienae, S. orientalis, S. rileyi, S. sullivani, and S. veracruzensis. Additionally, one new species of Scaralis in a new subgenus, Scaralis (Alphinoides) inbio, is described from Costa Rica and Guatemala. The limited information available suggests these insects feed on oaks (Quercus). The single defining putative synapomorphy for the subtribe Calyptoproctina is the enlarged apical plate on the female abdomen, which is absent in at least two members of Scaralina, and is also present in some genera that belong outside of Poiocerinae, so we reject the recognition of this subtribe. We consider that Scaralina is probably more closely related to the genus Scaralis Stål than to Alphina Stål. Based on morphology, some species originally described in Scaralis appear to be more closely related to one another than to the type species of the genus, and are here placed in a new subgenus, Alphinoides; Scaralis fluvialis Lallemand and Scaralis nigronotata Stål, plus three species originally described in Poiocera; Scaralis quadricolor (Walker) (the type species of Alphinoides), Scaralis semilimpida (Walker), and Scaralis spectabilis (Walker). Diagnoses are given for separation of the genera Scaralis and Scaralina, as well as the subgenus Alphinoides, plus descriptions of and keys to all species of Scaralina north of Panama, as well as keys to the genera corresponding to the former subtribe “Calyptoproctina” occurring north of Panama.","PeriodicalId":24072,"journal":{"name":"Zootaxa","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2024-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140685766","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Kali Tiger Reserve is a protected area, which is situated in the Central Western Ghats. The new species superficially most resembles Ghatiana sanguinolenta Pati, Thackeray & Pawar, 2023, from Karnataka but can easily be distinguished mainly by its ultimate article of the male first gonopod, which is distally gently curved inwards against the gently outwardly curved distal portion of the ultimate article in the latter species. Ghatiana dvirupa sp. nov. is also compared with the remaining species of the genus from Karnataka and some morphologically related species from Maharashtra. The difference in colour in life has been noticed between males and females of G. dvirupa sp. nov.; as such the common name of the new species is proposed as “Mr. and Mrs. Ghat Crab”. Ghatiana Pati & Sharma, 2014, is now known for 13 species, all from the Western Ghats of India. Karnataka currently possesses six species of Ghatiana, and many new species are yet to be described.","PeriodicalId":24072,"journal":{"name":"Zootaxa","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2024-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140683904","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
