A negative Spearman correlation between the testosterone blood concentration and the level of anxiety was observed in intact rats: the minimum hormonal concentrations (lower than 5 nmol/l) were found in rats with high anxiety, whereas the maximum concentrations (up to 16 nmol/l) corresponded to the higher anxiety level (prevalence of passive defense reactions during testing). After a sort-term exposure to life-threatening situation (viewing of a boa's attacking and devouring two victim rats from the test group), the correlation was deranged because of appearance of a scatter in testosterone blood concentration (from 3 to 21 nmol/l) in rats with low anxiety. Neurotization with inescapable pain stimulation also deranged the initial anxiety-testosterone correlation, but, as distinct from the exposure to life-threatening situation, eliminated individual differences in testosterone concentration at its low level. This study aimed to investigate whether such asymmetry existed in rats. The paw preference was defined by reaching into a small horizontal tube for a food pellet. Tissue concentration of DA was measured by high-performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection. It was shown that the DA concentration in the left NAcb was significantly higher in \"left-handed\" rats than in \"right-handed\" animals. Within the group of \"right-handers\", the DA concentration was significantly higher in the right NAcb than in the left NAcb. The righthanded university students (27 males and 26 females) participated in the experiments. An instruction \"to create the most original solution\" as compared to condition with an instruction \"to create any solution\" induced an increase in the baseline power of the alpha 1 and alpha 2 rhythms most pronounced in the posterior cortex. Task-related desynchronization of the alpha rhythms was higher but the beta-2 synchronization was lower after the former than after the latter instruction. Differences in the asymmetry of the alpha 1 and alpha 2 rhythms in the parietal and temporal regions of hemispheres suggested the right hemisphere dominance in intrinsic alertness and evoked activation related to divergent thinking. In different brain structures, there is a considerable degree of correlation between neuronal activities and slow potential oscillations. In the state of rest or deep extinction, the synchronization of brain neurons increases by the inhibitory type. In the active state of the brain, the degree of neuronal synchronization increases by the activation type. Both processes are determined by the involvement of the whole brain inhibitory or activation systems, respectively. A relative augmentation of inhibitory processes results in a restriction of information transmission in the cortex and prevents its fixation in memory of the system. A decrease in inhibition facilitates the excitation thransmission in the interconnected brain structures. The social rank of the partners was detected by asymmetry in aggressive behaviour. Using the experimental condition, when the both partners have no preferences for exclusive use of area we demonstrated that there were no rank differences in the number of mounts and testicular testosterone content. Nevertheless a rank asymmetry in the male sniffing behaviour towards a receptive female, weights of the testes, seminal vesicles, epididymes and the number of epididymal sperm was kept up in a stable social group. Social dominance was found to affect negatively on testicular testosterone increase in response to introduction of a receptive female and sexual attractiveness of male to a receptive female in both dominant and subordinate males. {"title":"[Effect of the motor cortex on heterogeneous afferent flows in the mediodorsal nucleus of the thalamus].","authors":"A G Poliakova","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>In experiments carried out on cats anaesthetized with Nembutal evoked potentials were recorded in the thalamic mediodorsal (MD) nucleus and in the projection and motor cortical areas with local cooling of the latter and the use of either single or paired stimuli of the same or different modalities. Visual and somatic excitatory inflows to the MD have been established, involving signals of specific and reticular genesis. Coming by separate ways they form isolated populations of neurones in the MD. A facilitating modulating influence of MD has been defined on the realization of afferent bursts produced in the motor cortex by visual and, particularly, somatic stimuli. It was found that in spite of its polyfunctionality, the motor cortex specifically influences heterogeneous inflows to the MD, exerting a more intensive and different action on the somatic afferentation as compared with the visual one.
