{"title":"[Two semantic brain systems for rapid and slow differentiation of the abstract and concrete words].","authors":"I R Il'iuchenok, O V Sysoeva, A M Ivanitskiĭ","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

In the previous studies, semantic processing was repeatedly found to be reflected in the late (300-800 ms) components of event-related potentials (ERP). However, a human may catch the meaning of the words much earlier. In this work we investigated brain mechanisms of semantic analysis of abstract and concrete written words in four experimental conditions: (1) simple reading (a subjects had to read words to him/herself); (2) simple classification (a subjects had to classify presented words into abstract and concrete categories); (3) cued and (4) uncued selective classification conditions (a subject had to classify only the words typed in a particular color). In the simple reading condition, early (40-100 ms) differences between the ERPs to concrete and abstract words were found mostly in the right frontal areas. During simple classification, the early differences between the ERPs were observed in more dorsal areas. Differences in the late ERP components (450-700 ms) in the left frontal area were characteristic of all cases of explicitly classified words. The findings suggest the existence of two semantic systems: a rapid implicit system which involves the right frontal cortex and can be suppressed by task demands, and a slow explicit system of word classification involving, predominantly, the left frontal area.
","PeriodicalId":24031,"journal":{"name":"Zhurnal vyssheĭ nervnoĭ deiatelnosti imeni I P Pavlova","volume":" ","pages":"566-75"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2007-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"40835000","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In recent years, there has been increasing evidence that the transformation of normal pattern of neuronal activity to paroxysmal one is associated with the increased production of these cytokines in the brain. However, the present results indicate that expressions of IL-1, TNF-alpha and IL-10 in the brain are associated with cell injury rather than with seizures per se. These findings suggest that, in response to seizures, these cytokines cause both neuroprotective or neurodegenerative effects and, as a consequence of these effects, the further facilitation or depression of seizure activity.
","PeriodicalId":24031,"journal":{"name":"Zhurnal vyssheĭ nervnoĭ deiatelnosti imeni I P Pavlova","volume":" ","pages":"541-52"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2007-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41059550","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It was found out that neurons displayed the early and late phasic responses (within 50-90 and 120-300 ms respectively, after the replacement) and long-term tonic response component, which depended on stimuli intensity. Analysis of phasic component revealed three neuronal groups. The first group (n=25, 30%) selected on the basis of the earliest component, was specialized to differentiate stimuli only by intensities. The perceptual spaces of these neurons reconstructed on the basis of spike discharge in the earliest response were two-dimensional. The second group of neurons (n=16, 19%) selected on the basis of the late phasic component demonstrated four-dimensional structure of perceptual space. Neurons of the third group (n=4, 5%) possessed a two-dimensional structure of perceptual space reconstructed by the analysis of the early component, whereas analysis of the late response revealed a four-dimensional structure. We suggest that information about differences between stimuli in color and intensity coming from cortical neurons is necessary for the reconstruction of four-dimensional space. The structure of perceptual spaces reconstructed on the basis of phasic responses of neurons in the colliculus superior was similar to the spaces of neurons in the primary visual cortex and lateral geniculate nucleus. The structure of perceptual space reconstructed on the basis of neuronal spikes was also similar to the space calculated from the N85 component of the visual evoked potential recorded under similar conditions. This finding confirms the general principle of vector coding in the visual system.
","PeriodicalId":24031,"journal":{"name":"Zhurnal vyssheĭ nervnoĭ deiatelnosti imeni I P Pavlova","volume":" ","pages":"576-90"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2007-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"40835001","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The article dedicated to the centenary of academician Mikhail Nikolaevich Livanov briefly outlines the history of development of his original concept of the functional significance of the brain potential's spatial synchronization phenomenon as a possible way of studying systemic organization of the brain electrical activity. The new parameter of \"space\" introduced into neurophysiology by M. N. Livanov made it possible to research the earlier unknown aspect of the brain activity. Livanov's ideas have been developed in many studies of the late decades of the XX century. In the review, much attention is given to specific functional significance of this phenomenon in a broad frequency band 1-250 Hz, especially, during instrumental learning. Energy (power spectra) and coherent-phase characteristics of cortical potentials in traditional (1-30 Hz), gamma-(30-80 Hz) and high-frequency (80-250 Hz) bands are compared. The problem of linear and nonlinear processes in the organization of the brain potentials is mentioned.
","PeriodicalId":24031,"journal":{"name":"Zhurnal vyssheĭ nervnoĭ deiatelnosti imeni I P Pavlova","volume":" ","pages":"520-32"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2007-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41059549","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is shown in this work that the late negativity typical of the semantic mismatch develops even in the context of non-symbolic and nonverbal, for example, four-point stimulus compositions which differ only in typology or angular size. Attention distraction from trial stimuli completely eliminates the effect of the late negativity. It is suggested that the brain finds semantic and formal (physical) descriptions for any stimulus composition. In the epileptic brain, twofold increase of general level of activity was observed comparative to control one, owing to augmentation of frequency of discharges in non-regular and regular non-bursting neurons. Sharp increase (three times as much) of number of cells with rhythmic burst discharges and changing of parameters of burst activity were discovered, the letter both in the neurons with endogenous (pacemaker) pattern and in the cells secondary involved in the rhythmic activity. Possible mechanisms of these alterations are discussed.
