In this paper we describe the unique energy related challenges and tradeoffs we encountered while building this watch. We show that the usage duty factor for the device heavily dictates which of the powers, active power or sleep power, needs to be minimized more aggressively in order to achieve the longest perceived battery life. We also describe the energy issues that percolate through several layers of software all the way from device usage scenarios, applications, user interfaces, system level software to device drivers. All of these need to be systematically addressed to achieve the battery life dictated by the hardware components and the capacity of the battery in the device.","PeriodicalId":239921,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Fifth International Symposium on Wearable Computers","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-10-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115213768","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed method is based on the integration of incremental motions (e.g., walking) over time to determine location transitions. To handle uncertainty, a fuzzy reasoning method is introduced. The paper also describes a prototype location recognition system that uses a set of inexpensive and wearable sensors, a bi-axial accelerometer and a digital compass. The system uses a reliable motion recognition method featuring only two directional acceleration measurements. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by experiments at six locations in an indoor environment.","PeriodicalId":239921,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Fifth International Symposium on Wearable Computers","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-10-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115503655","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Wearable computers are intended for personal use and the test supervisor does not know exactly what the test subject is currently seeing in augmented reality through the head-worn display of the wearable computer. Due to this personal nature, the concepts of traditional usability testing need some rethinking. This paper presents a combination of techniques that connects the computers of the test subject and the supervisor. Both of the computers share the same view of augmented reality and the supervisor knows exactly what the user is doing and what state the computer is in. All actions and sensor data are also recorded for later analysis. Complete usability tests have been made with this system and the system fulfilled its goals.","PeriodicalId":239921,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Fifth International Symposium on Wearable Computers","volume":"90 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-10-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115788174","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With wireless videoconferencing equipment this information could also be transmitted while the users move. This is the most demanding scenario for network operators. If the network is dimensioned for this, all applications should work. Based on case studies in the offshore oil business and road construction industry, remote inspection situations were studied to answer the question: What are the real situations for such an application and the implications these situations have for the terminal and for the network? It was found that the situations with the highest perceived cost-benefit were,Decision support', 'Guidance and demonstration' and 'Work planning'. These situations gave requirements for the terminal that has now been built. The terminal should have access to a digital broadband network that is reachable everywhere and that has characteristics that support person-to-person communication in both two party and multiparty configurations.","PeriodicalId":239921,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Fifth International Symposium on Wearable Computers","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-10-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123722657","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In our previous work, we proposed the method of image registration with an affine transform. However, the affine transform is generally not capable of image registration between a frame and a panorama. We improved the previous method so that it can estimate projective transform parameters without severely increasing computational cost. We also improved the method to be robust with respect to lighting changes by using the weighted sum of absolute difference of both brightness and its gradient between images. We confirmed that this improved method could estimate image registration parameters under conditions that hindered the previous method. Its computational cost increased by only 10-20% and its software implementation was capable of real-time processing.","PeriodicalId":239921,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Fifth International Symposium on Wearable Computers","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-10-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133718135","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An iterative research approach on technology push and user pull is applied. The technology push strand uses a top down approach of designing a Personal Service Environment (PSE) for mobile services. The PSE is defined as an environment that assists a user in finding, adapting and using services that fulfil his needs, given his personal profile, his mobility and his context. The user-pull strand conducted user evaluations to gain insights into tailoring behaviour of end-users. In order to derive user-tailoring data for PSE design, a questionnaire on personalisation of cellular phones was conducted. When combining these two approaches, both useful and usable personalised mobile services can be developed.","PeriodicalId":239921,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Fifth International Symposium on Wearable Computers","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-10-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129729973","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Human tactile perception is robust. A variety of shrinking tactile stimulator (tactor) technologies are available. Tactile displays are uniquely appropriate for wearable applications because of their close proximity to our 20 square feet of touch receptors: our skin. Tactile displays can solve issues of intrusive computers and multiple demands on user visual and audio attention. They are discreet and seamlessly integrate with most human activity. Tactile displays will neither conflict with nor replace audio and visual display but rather support information on these other displays and fill in the gaps where necessary. This paper presents our work in optimizing the design of a tactile display and discusses some of the issues and opportunities surrounding tactile displays for wearable computers. Additionally, we hope to inspire more work in this area.","PeriodicalId":239921,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Fifth International Symposium on Wearable Computers","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-10-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126246644","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
