Our novel optimization method optimizes the choice of clusters. We reduce the former energy consumption achieved by the state of the art. We manage to formulate this problem as an explicit linear optimization program. Thus, by decomposing the energy consumption into a constant and a variable part, we obtain an energy reduction of the variable part from 20% up to almost 50%, when compared with the best known method. We prove that we reach the best lower bound in term of energy consumption. Our method performs 10% to 90% of energy saving compared to an unclustered network.","PeriodicalId":239896,"journal":{"name":"2016 17th International Telecommunications Network Strategy and Planning Symposium (Networks)","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121361167","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, many applications demand results for systems with a transient behavior. In communication networks such transient phases arise from sleep scheduling or the slow-start phase of TCP. In both examples the service offered is separated into a transient and a steady-state phase. In a larger context also the arrivals to a queueing system can show transient behavior. The demand or availability of energy in smart grids, the pool of data generated after the map phase in big data applications, or the arrivals in public transportation networks are a few examples. Analyzing these kind of systems in a steady-state fashion (for example via queueing theory) ignores their behavior in the transient phases. On the other side the analysis of transient phases bears additional challenges. This paper uses stochastic network calculus to describe the non-stationary behavior of queueing systems. With the help of bivariate arrival- and service envelopes time-variant performance bounds are constructed. Two numerical examples exemplify the framework created by these envelopes and compare it to the time-invariant analysis.","PeriodicalId":239896,"journal":{"name":"2016 17th International Telecommunications Network Strategy and Planning Symposium (Networks)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131048496","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Global refers to the set of all queues in routers present in some network flow path. The main idea of the architecture is the detection of some anomaly somewhere downstream and the propagation of the local decision to a set of upstream routers or switches. The upstream devices are free to act as they wish. GQM is useful to boost some QoS configuration, save network resources, and to provide some mechanism to mitigate network attacks. It's also possible to integrate GQM with SDN, specially with OpenFlow that provides a Controller that can act upon anomaly detection.","PeriodicalId":239896,"journal":{"name":"2016 17th International Telecommunications Network Strategy and Planning Symposium (Networks)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122290156","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While an attractive approach to this problem is to use formal models of protocols in combination with mathematical optimization, such methods are often limited by either poor scalability or approximations of the models, leading to weak usability for realistic use-cases. In order to overcome those drawbacks, an emerging trend has been to use machine learning based techniques, which offer accurate predictions of the performance of network protocols. Our contribution in this paper is a general methodology which combines the statistical analysis of realistic data with an optimization algorithm in order to plan and optimize network topologies. One benefit of our approach is that it does not require prior knowledge on the studied topology and protocol. As an application example of our method, we address the challenge of placing virtual machines in a given topology with the general goal of optimizing the average bandwidth of TCP flows. In our numerical evaluation, our approach results in an overall average increase of the performance of TCP flows by more than 50%.","PeriodicalId":239896,"journal":{"name":"2016 17th International Telecommunications Network Strategy and Planning Symposium (Networks)","volume":"CE-23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126542928","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recently, there has been increasing interest from 3GPP operators to integrate multi-hop relaying functionalities into LTE-A standards. However, many issues remain to be resolved due to the complexity of the multi-hop relaying paradigm, specifically resource allocation and mobility management. In this work, we focus on the relay-selection problem, in which a user may have in his range several relay stations from which to choose. The conventional selection scheme is based on the channel condition between the relay and the user, such that the user will achieve a high level of throughput. Instead, we propose a novel relay selection strategy based on Markov Decision Process (MDP) for multi-hop relay networks. Our goal is to achieve significant performance improvement against legacy, centralized relay selection strategies such as the disjoint-path selection scheme. Simulation results show that our design has the advantage of reducing inter-cell handoff frequency and lowering handoff delay.","PeriodicalId":239896,"journal":{"name":"2016 17th International Telecommunications Network Strategy and Planning Symposium (Networks)","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126914163","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, two main leverages can be exploited to reduce brown energy consumption: a sleep mode on hosts in the DCs and geographical load balancing of the requests. In this paper, we propose a mixed integer linear programming formulation to compute the optimal requests assignment to data centers, with both a multi-period approach and a period-by-period assignment. We evaluate the impact of knowing future requests with respect to the optimal assignment. In addition, we provide an efficient on-line algorithm that could be implemented in an operational setting. The evaluation of the algorithm is based on real traffic traces, and shows a reduction up to 42% in the brown energy consumption.","PeriodicalId":239896,"journal":{"name":"2016 17th International Telecommunications Network Strategy and Planning Symposium (Networks)","volume":"140 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127512808","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Considerable latency is acceptable as a one-time situation. In scenarios where mobile devices need to re-authenticate, like during handoffs, re-authentication latency may turn out unacceptable in many services. In the paper we are evaluating improvements to Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP) introduced with the EAP Re-authentication Protocol (ERP), designed for use in the in the Authentication, Authorization and Accounting (AAA) system. The main conclusion is that the new protocol features, specifically the protocol extensions and the new key management framework indeed reduce signalling overhead, offload the server and improve security on the wireless link. They are collectively evaluated in the paper through numerical simulation and software-based emulation.","PeriodicalId":239896,"journal":{"name":"2016 17th International Telecommunications Network Strategy and Planning Symposium (Networks)","volume":"103 22","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131746435","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While the flat-rate and unlimited data plans are being replaced with this new criterion worldwide, anticipating the provider profit is highly vital in a competitive market. The user behavior acts like a foundation for any analytical structure and it is linked to many network and market parameters. In this paper, we define an analytical framework in a Stackelberg duopoly market in which each provider offers one data plan. Similar to general Stackelberg markets, one provider has better service quality in terms of coverage and offered data rate that puts it in the place to make the first move in service definition. Users are concerned about the quality of service while they have a limitation on their budget as well. We adopt the widely accepted utility theory to build our analysis. In this paper, the budget limits along with negative service quality due to existence of other users and offered data volume size are applied in the user utility and consequently provider profit to build our optimization framework.","PeriodicalId":239896,"journal":{"name":"2016 17th International Telecommunications Network Strategy and Planning Symposium (Networks)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133145496","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
