The resources spent in such tests can be reduced with the use of accurate planning and designing tools. In this paper, we describe and validate an LTE/LTE-A downlink simulator that is capable of accurately modeling the main performance metrics collected during walk tests. We evaluated the accuracy of the simulator to model and capture the characteristic behavior of the quality and strength of the received signal as users are handed over between cells. Furthermore, we evaluated the capability of the walk test simulator to accurately predict the user experience at the handover region in terms of the downlink data rate under different network loading conditions. Two traffic models were tested: a Quality of Service (QoS) based model and the typical Full Buffer model. Our validation was carried out based on experimental walk test data collected from a live LTE network. Our results indicated a significant reduction of the estimation error of the data rate of up to 86% with the QoS-aware traffic model.","PeriodicalId":239896,"journal":{"name":"2016 17th International Telecommunications Network Strategy and Planning Symposium (Networks)","volume":"213 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115454705","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, SDN is not immune to security vulnerabilities which currently exist in the legacy systems or which may newly arise due to change in the network design. Since the beginning of SDN development, primary focus of research was on separation of control plane from data plane by keeping performance and operational flexibility unchanged. In the due course of achieving this, security aspects of an SDN have taken a back seat. Even though separation of control plane from a data plane is a great step towards simplification of network management, it subjects the network into a potential two way target for intruders to gain control. Due to the centralized design of SDN, compromising security of a controller will be as good as compromising the security of a whole network. Enterprises which are moving towards adapting SDN are concerned about security issues and the resulting problems. In this paper, we analyze the security issues of few of the widely used controllers. We found that the OpenDaylight controller is the most secure one compared to the other controllers. In addition, this paper also provides a snapshot of current development in security aspect of SDN controllers such that it may help SDN controller developers to identify the issues and rectify the same in future releases.","PeriodicalId":239896,"journal":{"name":"2016 17th International Telecommunications Network Strategy and Planning Symposium (Networks)","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126306356","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is essential to guarantee quality of services (QoS) by automatically selecting appropriate network and computer resources to virtual networks (consisting of edge, core networks and data-centers) requiring high level of QoS when the surrounding network environments are rapidly-varying. In this paper, we propose to apply a classification method of supervised learning to determining a policy of virtualized resource selection for virtual networks (VNs). When a new VN is constructed, virtualized resources are selected according to the resource selection policy decided by the learning method which derives a classification boundary by means of past records on combinations of service requirements, time-varying network environments and actually-allocated virtualized resources. Then, our proposed scheme automatically and adaptively updates the resource selection policy by autonomously executing relearning on the basis of urgent contingencies, performances of VNs, and so on. Our proposed scheme will make it easier to exclusively occupy virtualized resources guaranteeing QoS especially for VNs requiring high level of QoS by reducing the blocking probability in resources request for the construction of the VNs.","PeriodicalId":239896,"journal":{"name":"2016 17th International Telecommunications Network Strategy and Planning Symposium (Networks)","volume":"319 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122815976","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A jitter buffer is used to control the packet rate and to compensate for the delay variation, commonly called jitter, by the tradeoff between delay and loss. In this paper, we present simulation results for the relation between the over- and underflow probabilities and the jitter. We then show how we can control a jitter buffer based on an estimation of the variance of the arrival process and a fast computation model for the jitter in this buffer.","PeriodicalId":239896,"journal":{"name":"2016 17th International Telecommunications Network Strategy and Planning Symposium (Networks)","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126256037","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We assume that each VNF is composed of sub-functions to be executed on general purpose hardware, each sub-function requiring a random amount of processing time. Because of limited processing capacity, we investigate the relevance of resource pooling where available cores in a data center are shared by active VNFs. We study by simulation various algorithms for scheduling sub-functions composing active VNFs (namely Greedy, Round Robin and Dedicated Core algorithms). We additionally introduce an execution deadline criterion, which means that VNFs can renege if their sojourn time in the system exceeds by a certain factor their service time. This feature is especially relevant when considering the processing of real-time VNF. Simulations show that sub-functions chaining is critical with regard to performance. When sub-functions have to be executed in series, the simple Dedicated Core algorithm is the most efficient. When sub-functions can be executed in parallel, Greedy or Round Robin algorithms offer similar performance and outperform the Dedicated Core algorithm. Enabling as much as possible parallelism and avoiding chaining when designing a VNF are fundamental principles to gain from the available computing resources.","PeriodicalId":239896,"journal":{"name":"2016 17th International Telecommunications Network Strategy and Planning Symposium (Networks)","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133798811","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

According to the recent Visual Networking Index report published by Cisco, the IP traffic will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 22 percent from 2015 to 2020. Space division multiplexing (SDM) in optical networks seems to be a promising solution with the scaling potential to overcome the possible capacity crunch problem in backbone networks. The key idea behind SDM is to exploit the spatial dimension to provide a significant increase in the transmission system capacity. The simplest version of SDM assumes the use of fiber-bundles composed of physically-independent, single-mode fibers. More advanced SDM deployments are based on multicore fibers (MCF) or multimode fibers (MMF). The main goal of this paper is to present integer linear programming (ILP) optimization models for flexgrid SDM optical networks. The proposed models reflect different ways of realizing SDM transmission, each characterized by different flexibility in the use of spatial and spectral resources. Since detailed ILP models precisely describing technological aspects of SDM may be difficult to solve due to their complexity, we provide an analysis of these issues. Eventually, we complement our study with a brief description of optimization algorithms that might be suitable for SDM optical networks.","PeriodicalId":239896,"journal":{"name":"2016 17th International Telecommunications Network Strategy and Planning Symposium (Networks)","volume":"151 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131927722","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Particularly, the utility of users, which is a quality metric of user experience in the service, decreases when a lot of mobile traffic concentrates at a wireless access network at a specific time. Therefore, in this study, we instruct users to delay their traffic to move a part of traffic in the peak time to the off-peak time and to smooth traffic temporally. However, since users do not always follow the instructing message from the communication system, we consider the response of users according to their utility in this study. We also consider two types of user models: learning and non-learning. The former considers past experienced utility, while the latter only considers the current utility without considering their past experience. In this paper, we assume both models and will verify our system works well.","PeriodicalId":239896,"journal":{"name":"2016 17th International Telecommunications Network Strategy and Planning Symposium (Networks)","volume":"70 4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128179308","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These adaptive controllers can tune their own configurations in real-time in order to enhance the performance of the applications running on top of them. We expect that the use of such controllers could alleviate some of the emerging challenges in SDN that could have an impact on the performance, security, or scalability of the network. Further, we propose extending the SDN controller architecture to support adaptive consistency based on tunable consistency models. Finally, we compare the performance of a proof-of-concept distributed load-balancing application when it runs on-top of: (1) an adaptive and (2) a non-adaptive controller. Our results indicate that adaptive controllers were more resilient to sudden changes in the network conditions than the non-adaptive ones.","PeriodicalId":239896,"journal":{"name":"2016 17th International Telecommunications Network Strategy and Planning Symposium (Networks)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115002686","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
