The launch of the Golden Visa in the UAE has marked a historic shift in the way the country approaches its non-national community. Building this research on the novel aspirations-capabilities nexus within the often-overlooked lifestyle migration theoretical corpus, I unpack the short-term impact of changing residency policies on the UAE’s Golden Visa recipients – medium- and high-skilled non-nationals from various backgrounds and industries. I employ semi-structured interviews with twenty-five recipients. My research inquiry finds that, while it does not provide a structural break in the whole-of-life approach to UAE’s non-residents, the Golden Visa does, indeed, act as an enabler of its recipients’ capabilities to fulfil their long-term aspirations and (re)construct their desired life(style) in the country. Hereby, this research dampens the paucity of inquiry on the backend processes before and after obtaining the Golden Visa through the lens of lifestyle migration, making a new mark on the GCC-focused literature as well.","PeriodicalId":239333,"journal":{"name":"Migration and Diversity","volume":"85 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130164517","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, the present work will focus on this relation by considering the factors which influence immigrants’contribution to destination countries’overall level of innovation, cultural diversity, demographic agglomeration forces and newcomers’educational background emerge as drivers of innovation which influence patenting activity. In a nation like India, where villages are frequently separated into caste-based parts, the caste system plays a very important role. Despite having achieved independence for such a long time, caste continues to play a significant role in shaping power dynamics, access to material resources, and even employment possibilities in rural India. Scholars have long been interested in the significance of caste in rural India, and numerous attempts have been made to comprehend the function of the caste system and its connections to migration. However, there hasn't been much research done in Uttar Pradesh, despite being the state with the highest male out-migration rate. Caste and male migration from rural Uttar Pradesh have received little research. In light of this context, the study will make an effort to comprehend the relationship between caste and migration in rural Uttar Pradesh. To meet the objective, a primary survey of 150 households in Azamgarh, the district with the highest male out-migration, was conducted. Data analysis and presentation have been done using simple statistical methods.\u0000Study found that male migrants from the village's higher castes tend to have advanced degrees and work mostly in skilled occupations. Caste affiliation frequently affects the availability of economic opportunities in rural Uttar Pradesh. More agricultural and non-farm possibilities must be created in the state's rural areas in order to close this gap. The MNREGA should be implemented well since it will be a significant step toward equal accessibility to all work possibilities. Giving the lower class of the village vocational and educational training needs to be prioritized more. Another intriguing finding of the study is that a considerable degree of educational attainment is supporting the reduction of  disparities among different castes.","PeriodicalId":239333,"journal":{"name":"Migration and Diversity","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114634808","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

He images the effects of globalization. Sami transitions his work to this “polyglot” culture in which his consciousness links the dissimilarities to synthesize the immigrant, the exile, the tourist, and the urban wanderer - the dominant figures of contemporary culture. He reflects on aspects such as “altermodernity,” constituting a “translation-oriented” modernity. His intervention, in kaleidoscopic styles and techniques, defines fragments of “medium-space-time.” He maps these as he wanders through continents and locations while he positions himself in translatable moving and affected environments. The global stage turns into a platform for an interchange of multitude portrayals of the world, in which Sami’s translation of ideas and imageries play a crucial role in dialogue that will give rise to a new shared intelligibility.","PeriodicalId":239333,"journal":{"name":"Migration and Diversity","volume":"191 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114421934","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to achieve sustainable mountain development, it is crucial to understand the various drivers and implications of out-migration in the mountains. Using both secondary and primary data on migration, this study examines different aspects of migration in the Garhwal Himalaya. Secondary data on migration were derived from a report published by the Rural Development and Migration Commission of Uttarakhand in 2018 that included migration statistics for the Garhwal region from 2011 to 2018. Primary data were collected through field surveys. Several types of migration were observed in the region, including semi-permanent migration, permanent migration, and in-migration. The study reveals that out-migration is a serious problem in the Garhwal Himalaya, as it has caused many socio-economic problems in the region. If these problems are not addressed immediately, the number of uninhabited/ghost villages in the region will increase rapidly, and the population of many villages will decline significantly. Finally, various policy measures were proposed to minimize the high rate of out-migration from the Garhwal Himalaya.","PeriodicalId":239333,"journal":{"name":"Migration and Diversity","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130856041","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nevertheless, the number of Syrian refugees is very high in the city and residents are distant to Syrians. Şanlıurfa case study aims to analyze the variation in social distance of residents toward Syrian refugees. This study argues that the number of migrants in a country (or in a neighborhood) is more important than cultural similarities when explaining social cohesion. In addition, based on multiple regression analysis, the study suggests that under such  circumstance, there are mainly three determinants to explain variation in social distance, which are related to the perception and/or beliefs of Şanlıurfa residents, such as perceived crime and social disorder; their beliefs about Syrian refugees’ personalities; and their linguistic (in)tolerance ( increase in criminality (perceived crime) and erosion in identity (and maybe norms, that is social disorder)).","PeriodicalId":239333,"journal":{"name":"Migration and Diversity","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122029480","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Paradoxically, it is also employed by the EU with regard to its external border security. Thus, the question arises of how the EU conceptualizes vulnerability in its external migration policies and who is perceived to be vulnerable – refugees and migrants, or external borders? Using a systematic lexical keyword search to identify relevant policy aims in the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum, the latest policy agenda on migration and asylum of the EU Commission published in September 2020, this paper highlights the mostly one-dimensional concept of vulnerability in external EU policies. In this article, it is argued that this entails significant gendered implications for asylum-seekers and migrants en route to Europe. It further reveals the detrimental effects for migrants and refugees caused by the EU’s focus and prioritization of its vulnerable borders. Ultimately, this paper by adopting a gendered lens calls into question whether the European Commission fully incorporates human rights commitments in its policy guidance on asylum and migration.","PeriodicalId":239333,"journal":{"name":"Migration and Diversity","volume":"93 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129083575","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The concerns of the migrant laborers were extensively covered in the media as an eye-opener. It presented the bitter truth of the poor versus rich class struggle intrinsic to the Indian Society. The paper inspects the situations of the migrant laborers in India during the first lockdown period of COVID-19 as depicted by 3 leading media units namely, Dainik Bhaskar, Times of India, and NDTV. These units were selected using purposive sampling, further the news reported specifically on migrant workers was selected for the time period of the first lockdown in India. NVivo 12 software was used to analyze the data. Sentiment analysis, word tree analysis, and word cloud analysis were performed to understand the issues faced by the migrant workers during the initial phase of lockdown. The findings are presented by means of diagrams and tables. It was found that lockdown had negative experiences for the migrant community.","PeriodicalId":239333,"journal":{"name":"Migration and Diversity","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127797702","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The immigrants (often bonafide asylum seekers and refugees) live in host countries without the necessary legal immigrant papers and therefore lack legal status. Illegality attaches to this status and creates economic demands satisfied by those who produce unauthorised (or authorised) immigrant papers. At times, government functionaries participate in these extralegal economies, adding to the robustness of the illicit economies and further harming this vulnerable population of immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers, and undocumented migrants. (For this paper, the term immigrants is an umbrella term for all the migrants.) The criminalisation of immigrants is rooted in the actions or inactions of government actors in the Global North and Global South who deny immigrants legal standing in the host country or in transit. These government functionaries and their smuggler counterparts, in turn, create an extralegal demand for papers and profit from restrictive immigration protocols.","PeriodicalId":239333,"journal":{"name":"Migration and Diversity","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125874546","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The inclusion of refugees in the formal labor market of host countries is one of the durable solutions promoted by the UNHCR and implemented in novel models in the countries’ domestic policies. The Introduction of the Medical Support Worker Scheme is the most recent support program aiming to improve refugee doctors’ economic integration during the unprecedented demand for medical workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. This article investigates the long-standing support program before the pandemic as well as the most recent policy initiatives for refugee doctors’ economic integration in the UK. The paper uses secondary data from literature and big datasets such as the Labour Data Survey and primary data from focus groups collected from the participants who are members of the Lincolnshire Refugee Doctors Project (LRDP). It performs a qualitative analysis of the perceptions of refugee doctors on their economic integration in the UK labor market. The analysis of the data shows mainly positive perceptions of the support program and the guidance and training offered by the organizations like LRDP. The findings also suggest that there are existing impediments to the economic integration of refugee doctors deriving from structural and procedural obstacles as well as from the global health crisis. The paper addresses this issue and makes recommendations for key policymakers in the UK to improve their integration process.","PeriodicalId":239333,"journal":{"name":"Migration and Diversity","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132855631","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
