The objective function is a linear combination of mainline and on-ramp flows, termed the generalized total travel time. The underlying freeway model - the asymmetric cell transmission model (ACTM) - is similar to the original cell transmission model (CTM), except that the merge law of the CTM has been replaced with additional terms weighted by the influence parameters. It is shown that an appropriate selection of the model parameters and boundary conditions guarantees a physically reasonable evolution of the ACTM. It is also shown that the resulting nonlinear optimization problem can be solved globally, by solving an equivalent linear program, whenever the cost weights are generated by a proposed numerical algorithm.","PeriodicalId":239269,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. There are at least three reasons for the blooming research in this field: first, the startling losses both in human lives and finance caused by vehicle accidents; second, the availability of feasible technologies accumulated within the last 30 years of computer vision research; and third, the exponential growth of processor speed has paved the way for running computation-intensive video-processing algorithms even on a low-end PC in realtime. This paper provides a critical survey of recent vision-based on-road vehicle detection systems appeared in the literature (i.e., the cameras are mounted on the vehicle rather than being static such as in traffic/driveway monitoring systems).","PeriodicalId":239269,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. {"title":"Integration of dynamic vehicle routing and microscopic traffic simulation","authors":"Qiang Li","doi":"10.1109/ITSC.2004.1399047","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/ITSC.2004.1399047","url":null,"abstract":"Dynamic vehicle routing (DVR) systems are the key component of ATIS. DVR systems are designed to provide route recommendations based on actual or predicted traffic conditions. DVR is concerned with design of the best vehicle routes on which the drivers are serviced during their allowable or requested time of periods. DVR is highly sensitive to the time at which the trip starts at certain time and en-route time encounters different delay since travel time varies considerably with the departing time. Travel times are also very important for routing decision since they impact the decision of whether a driver could be assigned to a specific route. Microscopic traffic simulation is frequently used to study the effect of various factors on traffic parameters such as link travel times. The author proposed a new approach, which integrates and incorporate the traffic simulation modeling and dynamic routing capabilities into a dynamic vehicle routing system. This approach uses simulation models to mimic actual traffic conditions as functions of times along the potential routes to provide optimal routes.","PeriodicalId":239269,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. COTS wireless is an economical, scalable alternative to traditional fiber optics and telephony communications solutions. A virtual Ethernet network is created along a highway right-of-way (ROW) by installing wireless point-to-point links in a serial fashion that can extend upwards of 30 miles per section from a base node. This local area network (LAN) becomes a seamless extension of the DOT's communications for field devices such as cameras, RWIS, traffic sensors, and field personnel. This paper discusses the design and architecture issues of serial wireless LANs used in a transportation setting based on real world deployments and outdoor testing on Virginia's Smart Road Transportation test bed. Digital video applications along wireless networks are specifically addressed.","PeriodicalId":239269,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. It proposes a comparison of calculating safest distance traveled by a vehicle by evaluating vehicle health monitoring using open loop Mamdani, open loop Sugeno, hybrid fuzzy, closed loop genetic fuzzy and adaptive neuro fuzzy controller, making use of knowledge based system and fuzzy control. The proposed system alerts driver about possibility of completing journey successfully, considering number of the factors like journey condition, journey classification, vehicle condition, optimum distance to be traveled and status of the driver. We propose three-phase development framework. In first phase, fuzzy logic controllers with Mamdani and Sugeno model are employed. Since both have some restrictions, an attempt has been made in this paper to make best of both the world by merging special membership function shapes of the both the models. This helps in both regulatory control as well as tracking control. Nearly 5-8% improvement in the results is obtained if we incorporate hybrid fuzzy (Mamdani Sugeno) model in the system. In second phase, a genetic fuzzy system is proposed to promote the learning performance of logic rules. The resultant hybrid system seems to be highly adaptive and trained through a proper performance, hence is much more sophisticated and has a higher degree of adaptive parameters. In third phase, adaptive fuzzy neural network is proposed to tune membership functions through proper training.","PeriodicalId":239269,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. It is critical to be able to distinguish between long-term gradual changes in the background and short-term rapid changes resulting from moving objects in the scene. We propose an efficient background updating scheme for real-time traffic monitoring. In particular, we address the sleeping person problem, which arises frequently in the context of real-time traffic monitoring. The proposed scheme combines two levels of reasoning: low-level reasoning based on pixel status analysis and high-level reasoning based on moving object correspondence analysis. The proposed scheme is robust and fast enough to satisfy the real-time constraints of traffic monitoring.","PeriodicalId":239269,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. A true single viewpoint multi-resolution elliptical cone catadioptric system with 180 degree horizontal field of view is suggested in order to provide higher resolution in lookahead direction and less in lateral direction. An elliptical cone is used as catoptric element and conventional perspective camera is used as dioptric element. The single viewpoint of the catadioptric system is proved and its vertical and horizontal resolution, and vertical field of view are calculated by pinhole imaging model and geometric optics image formation model. Experimental results verify the ability of multi-resolution of the system.","PeriodicalId":239269,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. In this paper, gap time is identified as a primary random variable in congested traffic and the wave speed is determined according to the relative difference between gap time and driver's reaction time. The growth or decay of perturbations are explained in accordance with the random transition of observation points in the fundamental diagram.","PeriodicalId":239269,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings.
