The conventional treatment choice for breast abscess is incisive drainage that is reportedly associated with few limitations. Ayurveda offers a multidimensional approach in the treatment of Vidradhi, which resembles abscess on clinical correlation. A case of a 25 year old multiparous woman, eight months postpartum with Stana vidradhi (~lactational breast abscess) in Pachyamanavastha (~transforming stage of disease) presented to the outpatient department. She was treated with Apatarpana (~depleting therapy), internal Ayurveda medicines, and in-situ non-invasive procedures for seven days. This intervention protocol resulted in a marked resolution of complaints along with a completely healed wound without a scar on the follow-up visit after one week. The present case offers a promising alternative for lactational breast abscess with the use of multidimensional noninvasive therapy resulting in shorter healing time and satisfactory cosmetic outcome.","PeriodicalId":239185,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Ayurveda Case Reports","volume":"44 1","pages":"108 - 112"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139365729","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The bite of certain insects if left untreated or if treated partially will lead to the manifestation of complications in later stages. The etiological factors including changes in lifestyle, food habits, and climatic changes further point on to the possibility of involvement of Dhooshivisha (~weak poison) which in turn leads to a relapsing tendency. The long-term management of Dhooshivisha demands grass-root level intervention. If there is an involvement of Dhooshivisha, the treatment should be adopted focusing on its management. Here is a case of a 62-year-old female with a history of Keeta damsha (~insect bite) which was left untreated giving complications in a span of every six months duration. In this case, an attempt was made to find out the involvement of Dhooshivisha, and treatment was given considering the principles of Dhooshivisha chikitsa. Two sittings of Siravyadha (~venepuncture) along with internal medicines including Patolakaturohinyadi kashayam and Dhooshivishahari agada were given for a span of 21 days. The treatment provided interesting results; however, further studies can be conducted in this area for a better line of intervention.","PeriodicalId":239185,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Ayurveda Case Reports","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126190825","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Muscular dystrophies are characterized by weakness and degeneration of various voluntary muscles of the body. The severity, specific symptoms, and progression of these disorders vary greatly. A six and half-year-old female child was brought by her parents to the outpatient department (OPD) of Kaumarabhritya department, with the chief complaints of toe walking, unable to balance her body, tremors while standing, unable to stand from a sitting position without support, and unable to lift up both legs from the supine position. The patient visited the OPD with a diagnosis as CMD. After examination, internal medications: Bilwadi gutika, Ashwagandha churna, Pippali churna, Pravala bhasma, and Shirisharishta were prescribed along with Panchakarma procedures (~five therapeutic procedures) including Udwartana (~therapeutic massage using powders), Sarvanga abhyanga (~whole body oil massage), Swedana (~sudation therapy), Niruha basti (~therapeutic decoction enema), and Anuvasana basti (~therapeutic unctuous enema). After treatment, improvement in muscle power was seen. The total score of the Barthel index before the study was 70 and after the study was 95, which shows improvement in activity of daily life. Serum creatine phosphokinase and serum creatine kinase-MB values were insignificantly improved before and after treatment. Liver function test, kidney function test, and electrocardiogram before and after treatment were within normal limits, this shows the safety of the internal medication and Ayurvedic Panchakarma procedures. Improvement in the activity of daily life and muscle power seen in the present case gives hope, where there are still no satisfactory management options for patients with CMD are available.","PeriodicalId":239185,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Ayurveda Case Reports","volume":"241 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122113599","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Levetiracetam is an antiepileptic drug indicated in the management of partial-onset, tonic myoclonic, and tonic-clonic seizures. However, it is associated with severe adverse drug reactions such as psychosis, anxiety, suicide, and allergic reactions. The presenting symptoms of anxiety disorder can be identified as Chittodwega (~anxiety), which is a Manasa vikara (~psychological disorder) in the context of Ayurveda. This case report shows the effect of the Ayurvedic drug Gorakhmundi in relieving the symptoms of anxiety in Levetiracetam-induced anxiety. A 50-year-old female patient who is a known case of seizures presented to the outpatient department with symptoms of anxiety. The patient was diagnosed with levetiracetam-induced anxiety and was suffering from heaviness in the head, palpitation, irritability, tingling sensation in extremities, irrational fear, diminished sleep, and intermittent gastrointestinal disturbances. The patient assessment was done on the basis of the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A) and Manasa bhava parikshana (~assessment of psychological parameters) according to the principles of Ayurveda. The patient was treated with Gorakhmundi ghana vati (500 mg) twice a day for two months. The patient showed complete remission of symptoms after two months of treatment. A significant change was observed in pre- and post therapy assessment through the HAM-A and Manasa bhava parikshana. The case report highlights the effective use of Ayurveda treatment for the management of drug-induced anxiety disorder in an epileptic patient.","PeriodicalId":239185,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Ayurveda Case Reports","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130114331","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nerve impingement due to cervical disc herniation causes symptoms that correlate with Sarvanga roga (~quadriparesis). The present case is of a 44-year-old male who reported neck pain, stiffness, and reduced power in bilateral upper and lower limbs, due to which he was unable to walk on his own and unable to perform daily living activities. Ayurveda holds bountiful resources for the management of Vata (~Dosha responsible for movement and cognition) disorders. This patient was treated with oral medicines along with Panchakarma therapy on the line of treatment of Vatavyadhi (~disorders due to Vata). The result was assessed using the Modified Ashworth scale for muscle tone, Medical Research Council scale for muscle power, National Institute for Neurological Disorders and Stroke grading for deep tendon reflex, and Katz Index of Independence in Activities of Daily Living. The result obtained after 45 days of treatment helped the patient to walk and perform activities of daily living independently. Treatment provided relief by reducing pain, stiffness, and cervical cord edema and providing strength to local muscles, bones, tendons, and ligaments. This case provided positive hope for serious cases like this, where patients are left with the only option of surgery.","PeriodicalId":239185,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Ayurveda Case Reports","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125792837","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In established conventional medicine, the treatment includes urethral dilation, urethrotomy, and urethroplasty having varied prognoses. As per the Ayurvedic perspective, the condition can be correlated with Mutrapraseka sankocha (~urethral stricture). Uttarabasti (~intra urethral douche) is one of the effective procedures for urethral stricture. A single case study of 24-year-old male patient suffering from urethral stricture for four years has been illustrated here. The patient had complaints of straining during micturition, burning and dribbling micturition, and unsatisfactory urination along with the increased frequency of micturition. The patient has taken conventional treatment without significant improvement and approached for Ayurvedic treatment. After taking a detailed history and thorough examination, it was planned to administer Uttarabasti using the combination of Tila taila (10 ml), Saindhavadi taila (3 ml), Yavakshara taila (2 ml) for eight days along with Gokshuradi guggulu (500 mg) twice a day with lukewarm water, and Varunadi kwatha (30 ml) twice a day with an equal amount of water internally for 30 days. The patient showed remarkable improvement after the treatment. This therapeutic interventional case study revealed that Uttarabasti for eight sittings along with internal drugs provides significant relief in symptoms of urethral stricture.","PeriodicalId":239185,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Ayurveda Case Reports","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116652926","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It can be understood as Nasanaha (~nasal obstruction) in Ayurveda. Even though there are many conditions of the nose causing nasal blockage; inferior turbinate hypertrophy which is a cardinal feature in hypertrophic rhinitis is one of the most common causes of anatomical nasal obstruction, the others being internal nasal valve stenosis and septal deviation. The turbinate hypertrophy in this condition can be managed medically using nasal decongestants and corticosteroids and it can be also managed surgically. Continuous use of nasal decongestants can cause rebound congestion. Surgical management also has limitations such as synechiae formation and postoperative bleeding. Kshara pratisarana (~external application of alkali), which is one among the types of parasurgical procedures explained in Ayurveda, can be used effectively in this condition. Moreover, nasal obstruction is one of the most common symptoms presented to an otorhinolaryngologist and it badly affects the quality of life of the patient. The present case report is a case of a 24-year-old female who was unable to sleep properly due to severe nasal obstruction and chronic rhinitis along with hypertrophy of both inferior turbinates. This also affected her studies badly. She also complains of thick nasal discharge along with obstruction. The patient had the complaints for two years but the symptoms became more severe during the past six months. On anterior rhinoscopic examination using Thudicum's nasal speculum, the presence of bilateral inferior turbinate hypertrophy was observed. The patient was treated with Pratisarana of Kadali kshara (~alkali of Musa paradisiaca Linn.) along with Sigrusimhyadi taila nasya. The treatment was effective in the present case with no recurrence during a follow-up period of 30 days. This case report revealed that nasal obstruction, which is a common problem seen nowadays can be managed effectively using Ayurvedic intervention.","PeriodicalId":239185,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Ayurveda Case Reports","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116910507","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
