Among the diagnostic tools, Upashaya-Anupashaya (~understanding of aggravating and relieving factors) is useful during unclear pathology and symptomatology. Upashaya is the betterment, and Anupashaya is the aggravation of disease by medication, diet, and lifestyle. The case presented here is of a 60-year-old male with sudden weakness of the left upper and lower extremities, with no other symptoms and significant previous medical history. The provisional diagnosis was Pakshavadha (~hemiplegia) and treated through Brimhana (~nourishing therapy), which led to the aggravation of the disease condition. Anupashaya by Brimhana treatment confirmed the diagnosis to Kaphavrita Vata (~occlusion of Vata by Kapha dosha) and was treated with Rukshana (~dryness inducing therapies), Pachana (~enhancing digestion) with significant relief in symptoms within four days, with no recurrence. The significance of Upashaya-Anupashaya in the confirmation of disease and treatment is highlighted in this case.","PeriodicalId":239185,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Ayurveda Case Reports","volume":"1 1","pages":"98 - 102"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139365401","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In classical literature, spider envenomation is coined as Luta visha (~spider bite poisoning). A 20-year-old male patient approached to outpatient department with the chief complaint of a wound over the calf muscle region of the right lower limb associated with watery discharge, itching, pain, and burning sensation for the past six months. There was a mild rise in temperature. On evaluation, the symptoms were identified to be spider-bite poisoning. The patient was given classical Ayurveda therapeutic measures, which include Virechana (~therapeutic purgation), followed by Lekhana karma (~therapeutic scrapping) over the site of the bite and Jalaukavacharana (~bloodletting using leech) for five days. At the time of discharge, Bilvadi gutika (860 mg) twice daily for one month was advised. A remarkable improvement was observed in the condition of the patient within 14 days of treatment. The treatment approach, including Virechana, Lekhana karma, and Raktamokshana, gave significant results with complete healing of Luta vishajanya vrana (~spider poison-induced ulcer) within the span of six months. After treatment, no recurrence of symptoms was observed when followed the patient up to two months.","PeriodicalId":239185,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Ayurveda Case Reports","volume":"9 1","pages":"113 - 118"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139364695","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Chemotherapy is the largely accepted treatment protocol for cancer, but it comes with an increased risk of infections and side effects. Ayurveda can be a promising adjunct therapy to minimize the adverse effects of chemoradiotherapy. A 65-year-old female who was a known case of double-vessel block suddenly developed severe abdominal pain and was treated symptomatically by a general physician. Her weight loss was consistent with multiple episodes of abdominal pain for a year after which she was diagnosed to have moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma of the cecum. The patient was managed with exploratory laparotomy (with right hemicolectomy with ileal transverse colon end-to-end anastomosis). The histopathology study reported it as a Modified Astler–Coller stage C2. Consequently, six cycles of Folfox (chemotherapy) were advised by the oncologist. Before starting the chemotherapy, Ayurveda treatment was started to combat the expected side effects of chemotherapy. The treatment protocol included Dhanyaka phanta, Suvarnamalini vasanta, Madiphala rasayana, and Guduchyadi ksheerapaka. The patient had no additional complaints during the chemotherapy and all the hematological parameters were within normal limits. The patient reported weight gain after completion of the chemotherapy. Expected side effects (hair loss, mouth sores, anorexia, diarrhea, and vomiting) were not reported during the treatment. Known side effects of chemotherapy like infection, easy bruising, bleeding, or fatigue were also not reported; therefore, the present study concludes that the side effects of chemotherapy may be controlled by Ayurveda adjunct therapy.","PeriodicalId":239185,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Ayurveda Case Reports","volume":"58 1","pages":"103 - 107"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139364730","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Diffuse cutaneous scleroderma and Limited Cutaneous Systemic Sclerosis (LcSSC) are the two major classifications of it. LcSSc usually affects the skin and further spreads to muscles and joints, but in about 10% cases, involvement of internal organs like gastrointestinal tract and manifestations like pulmonary hypertension is seen even after 10–15 years. The prevalence of the disease is 17.6/100,000 population. As far as the management of LcSSC in conventional medicine is concerned, other than symptomatic relief; immunosuppressive drugs are given, but long-term use of such medicines suppresses the immunity of the patient and hence the patient may get affected with opportunistic infections and causes severe complications. Hence, some alternatives in this direction are being explored from other systems of medicines for the betterment of patients. The direct description of the disease scleroderma is not available in Ayurvedic literature, but based on its presentation, it can be correlated with different stages of Vatarakta (~rheumatism due to blood tissue). A 20-year-old young male patient with presentation of limited scleroderma managed with Ayurveda therapy by Virechana (~therapeutic purgation) followed by Shamana (~palliative) therapy for one and half months and obtained encouraging results, inferring that Ayurveda therapeutic protocols can be successfully adopted in cases like LcSSC.","PeriodicalId":239185,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Ayurveda Case Reports","volume":"6 1","pages":"125 - 130"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139365551","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are 18 types of Kushta described in Ayurveda. Out of which, Vipadika (~cracks in palms and soles) is one. It can be correlated with palmoplantar psoriasis. According to ancient seers of Ayurveda, Pani pada sphutana (~cracks in palms and soles), Tivra vedana (~severe pain), Manda kandu (~mild itching), and Saraga pidika (~redness associated with eruptions) are the symptoms of Vipadika. In the present case report, a 62-year-old male patient complained of dryness and cracking of the left sole with roughness associated with itching on the plantar aspect of the left foot and severe pain during walking for two years. He was taking allopathic treatment for two years but had limited relief. The patient has difficulty in mobility and daily activities. A combination of Shuddha gandhaka, Rasamanikya, and Chopachini churna along with Kaishore guggulu, Raktaprasadaka hima, Panchatikta ghrita, Panchasakara churna, Arogyavardhini vati, and Sarivadyasava as internal medicines and Haridra, Rasamanikya along with Yashtimadhu was prescribed as a local application. The patient was advised to follow Pathya and Apathya (~wholesome and unwholesome diet) during the treatment. Within three months of the treatment, the psoriatic lesions and associated signs and symptoms were healed effectively.","PeriodicalId":239185,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Ayurveda Case Reports","volume":"105 1","pages":"131 - 136"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139365711","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The six most common sites are breast, lung, mouth, cervix, uterus, and tongue. Among these, lung cancers are reported to have the greatest fatality rate. In the present case, a 49-year-old male patient suffering from adenocarcinoma in the upper lobe of the left lung was managed with herbo-mineral Ayurvedic combinations along with conventional treatment. He had a history of right-sided chest pain after facing a fall from stairs. The chest X-ray showed a right-sided rib fracture. However, as an additional accidental finding, a 3-cm mass on the upper lobe of the left lung was also visible, which was found malignant after the detailed investigations. The patient was initially treated with conventional treatment and surgery, followed by chemotherapy. During chemotherapy, he had complaints of pain, numbness of hands and legs, nausea, anorexia, and severe weakness. Hence, concurrent Ayurvedic treatment was also started after the second cycle of chemotherapy (January 27, 2019), and after completing the modern treatment, Ayurveda treatment was continued till May 27, 2023, accounting for five years approximately. The combination therapy module provided complete symptom alleviation and marked improvement in the positron emission tomography scan that showed marked improvement and did not show any new abnormality in subsequent follow-ups. No recurrences were noticed for the last more than four years. The fact that all of the symptoms have alleviated and investigations show no abnormality is suggestive that the add-on Ayurveda treatment in this case of adenocarcinoma has aided the patient with a more than four year disease-free survival along with the good quality of life as determined by Karnofsky score (90/100).","PeriodicalId":239185,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Ayurveda Case Reports","volume":"100 1","pages":"92 - 97"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139364447","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This manifestation is comparable to Amavata in Ayurveda. A 26-year-old female diagnosed with RA was treated with Ayurveda modalities including Valuka swedana (~sudation therapy using sand), Virechana (~therapeutic purgation), Basti (~therapeutic enema), and Samshamana snehapana (~type of internal oleation for palliative purpose). The patient was assessed both subjectively and objectively before and after completion of the treatment. Before treatment, the values of rheumatoid factor, C-reactive protein, and erythrocyte sedimentation rate were 358.4, 13.7, and 80, respectively, which were reduced to 153.1, 2.74, and 17, respectively, after one month of treatment. In addition, marked improvement in clinical signs and symptoms such as pain, stiffness, and swelling in joints was also observed. Even though the illness was first identified several decades ago, the etiology and therapy appear to remain understudied. In Ayurveda, many herbs have proved efficacy in the treatment of psoriasis, but the disease's complex etiology requires a multimodal therapeutic strategy. A 22-year-old male patient with persistent plaque psoriasis in the last three years presented with erythematous plaques over the back, chest, neck, legs, abdomen, scalp, and forehands. The Auspitz sign, Candle grease sign, and Koebner phenomenon were positive. The treatment plan was based on the Ayurvedic Samprapti (~pathophysiology) of Ekakushta (~plaque psoriasis). Virechana (~therapeutic purgation) along with Ayurvedic oral medicines and a wholesome dietary regimen were given. Within eight months of the treatment, the psoriatic lesions and associated signs and symptoms were healed effectively. No adverse events were reported during the course of therapy and no recurrence was noticed as of reporting the present case report. Altogether, multimodal Ayurveda treatment can be an effective and safe solution for plaque psoriasis.","PeriodicalId":239185,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Ayurveda Case Reports","volume":"1 1","pages":"137 - 142"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139365477","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
