This paper describes an efficient algorithm for designing these decimators and interpolators for both the single-stage and multistage implementations in such a way that the resulting filters become multiplierless with short coefficient wordlength. For single-stage filters, the coefficient optimization is performed in two steps. First, a nonlinear optimization algorithm is used for determining a parameter space of the infinite-precision coefficients including the feasible space, where the filter meets the given criteria. The second step involves finding the filter parameters in this space so that the resulting filter meets the given criteria with the simplest coefficient representation forms. For multistage decimators and interpolators, these two steps are performed independently for each filter stage by properly sharing their attenuation responsibilities. This considerably reduces the overall optimization time. An example is included in order to illustrate the benefits of the proposed synthesis scheme.","PeriodicalId":238993,"journal":{"name":"ISPA 2005. In this paper we consider a simple-to-implement particle filter, called 'LIS-based particle filter', whose aim is to overcome the above mentioned weakness. LIS-based particle filters sample the particles in a two-stage process that uses information of the most recent observation, too. Experiments with the standard bearings-only tracking problem indicate that the proposed new particle filter method is indeed a viable alternative to other methods.","PeriodicalId":238993,"journal":{"name":"ISPA 2005. The method first segments the heart region. In the obtained volume candidate objects are extracted by thresholding. They include coronary calcification, calcium located elsewhere in the heart, for example, in the valves or the myocardium, and other high density structures mostly representing noise and bone. A set of 57 features is calculated for each candidate object. In the feature space objects are classified with a k-NN classifier and feature selection in three consecutive stages. The method is tested on 51 scans of the heart. They contain 320 calcification in the coronary arteries, 291 in the aorta and 62 calcifications in the heart. The system correctly detected 177 calcifications in the coronaries at the expense of 56 false positive objects. On average the method makes 3.8 errors per scan.","PeriodicalId":238993,"journal":{"name":"ISPA 2005. Consequently, it is submitted to subjective considerations such as the aptitude and the experiment of the interpreter, in addition of the poor quality of radiographic images, due essentially to the exposure conditions. These considerations make the weld quality interpretation inconsistent, labor intensive and sometimes biased. It is thus desirable to develop computer-aided techniques to assist the interpreter in evaluating the quality of the welded joints. For the characterization of the weld defect region, looking for features which are invariant regarding the usual geometric transformations proves to be necessary because the same defect can be seen from several angles according to the orientation and the distance from the welded framework to the radiation source. Thus, a set of invariant geometrical attributes which characterize the defect shape is proposed. The principal component analysis technique is used in order to reduce the number of attribute variables in the aim to give better performance for defect classification. Thereafter, an artificial neural network for weld defect classification was used. The proposed classification consists in assigning the principal types of weld defects to four categories according to the morphological characteristics of the defects usually met in practice.","PeriodicalId":238993,"journal":{"name":"ISPA 2005. The technique is based on aligning edge elements from the two input images, since they often originate from physical discontinuities which are likely to be detected by both sensors. The design has been specifically adapted for robust operation on images of regular objects with few distinct structural axes, in the context of automated inspection. The hypotheses are formed by speculating a correspondence between the pairs of parallelograms from the two input images, and evaluated according to the quality of the match of a transformed edge image. The best hypothesis is finally refined by a nonlinear optimization algorithm. The technique has been tested on 42 pairs of 14 infrared and 3 RGB images of an unevenly heated metal prism, and the obtained results are reported.","PeriodicalId":238993,"journal":{"name":"ISPA 2005. It is known that detecting small targets in remotely sensed image is difficult and challenging work. The goal is to identify target areas with small number of false alarms in a thermal infrared scene of battlefield. The proposed method consists of following three stages. First, center-surround difference with local adaptive threshold is proposed in order to find salient areas in an input image. Second, local thresholding is proposed to the local region of interest (ROf) based on the result of first step. The second step is needed to segment target silhouettes precisely. Third, the extracted binary target silhouettes are compared with target template using size and affinity to remove clutters. In the experiments, many natural infrared images with high variability are used to prove performance the proposed method. It is compared with a morphological method using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and execution time. The result shows that our method is superior to the morphological method and it can be applied to automatic target recognition (ATR) system.","PeriodicalId":238993,"journal":{"name":"ISPA 2005. Approximate filters (such as the extended Kalman filter or particle filters) are known to converge to the optimal filter when the local error (committed at each step of time) vanishes. But this convergence is in general not uniform in time. Error bounds obtained in the general case suggest that the approximation error could grow exponentially with time. This divergent phenomena is actually observed in some simulations. To avoid that divergence of approximate filters with the number of observations, an idea is to reduce the number of observations without losing too much information. This paper proposes an optimal approach to reduce the number of observations for filtering. This new approach is applied to particle filtering and tested in the case of the bearing only tracking problem.","PeriodicalId":238993,"journal":{"name":"ISPA 2005. Black-and-white aerial photographs with an approximate scale M /spl ap/ 1:20,000 and 60% overlap, obtained during cyclical survey of the Republic of Croatia, were used for this purpose. According to research results, there are three basic forms of histograms which may be associated with the corresponding density categories. They may also purposefully be used to estimate the density and condition of a stand. Furthermore, the form of histograms of stand scenes corresponds to stand descriptions. Stands with normal and poor density may be defined with digital value classes, while stands with density between 0.50 and 0.80 cannot be specified accurately. Ocular assessment of density based on stand canopy was also made, and firm correlation with concrete density was established, i.e. it was found that canopy may be used as a measure of density.","PeriodicalId":238993,"journal":{"name":"ISPA 2005. We present in this paper a color based probabilistic tracker that is suitable for tracking players on the playground during a sport game. Since the players are being tracked in their natural environment and this environment is subjected to certain rules of the game, we use the concept of closed worlds, to model the scene context and thus improve the reliability of tracking.","PeriodicalId":238993,"journal":{"name":"ISPA 2005.
