Reptiles together with migratory birds and migrating mammals, are the groups of vertebrates that transfer unknown tick species to the territory of Poland. The majority of exotic reptiles brought to Poland for breading and commercial purpose are infested by ticks. Therefore the systematic list of ticks as well as their geographical distribution in the world, tick-host specificity, characteristic and morphological description of genera/species are presented. The described species are as follow: Amblyomma exornatum, Amblyomma flavomaculatum, Amblyomma latum, Amblyomma nuttalli, Amblyomma quadricavum, Amblyomma sphenodonti, Amblyomma transversale, Amblyomma varanense, Hyalomma aegyptium. It is important to monitor occurrence of unknown tick species on hosts in Poland. Stage II larvae hatched from egg shells were placed in tap water as well as in 1% and 3% solutions of NaCl. Part of the culture was run on Petri dishes and aerated each day. The second part was transferred into high beakers and left non-aerated. All cultures were run in three replications at temperatures of 4, 10, 20 and 30 degrees C. Microscopic observations of the survivability and activity of the larvae were conducted every day in all samples. The larvae incubated for 30 days at a temperature of 4 degrees C were viable and non-motile. The longest life span was noted in the case of the larvae incubated in the aerated 1% solution of NaCl at a temperature of 10 degrees C, which also recorded the lowest mobility. The shortest life span was reported for the larvae incubated in the non-aerated 3% solution of NaCl at a temperature of 30 degrees C. One of the reasons behind it is the globalization and increased number of people travelling to endemic areas of parasitic diseases. Consequently, we need to treat increasing number of patients showing symptoms of such diseases. Unfortunately, the array of available and efficient antiparasitic drugs has been shrinking. Their efficacy decreases and quite often the side effects are serious. Humans become infected by ingestion of infective eggs either from soil, dirty hands, raw fruits and vegetables or larvae from undercooked meat of paratenic hosts. The aim of the study was to evaluate the level of contamination of soil samples from households of children with diagnosed toxocariasis in rural and urban areas of Łódź voivodeship. In the years 2004-2007 toxocariasis was confirmed in 178 patients of the Polish Memorial Hospital in Łódź. The soil samples were collected from 53 courtyards of patients' domiciles. Toxocara spp. eggs were isolated from the samples using flotation technique (Dada 1979). The examinations revealed the high prevalence of ground contamination with Toxocara eggs in both, rural (30.4%) and urban areas (23.3%). Trichodina acuta Lom, 1961 is found for the first time in Bangladesh. Trichodina shitalakshyae sp. n. is characterized by having an undivided clear central area in the adhesive disc with a rounded or slightly undulated perimeter containing a few dark granules which form patches; elongated and rectangular blade with large interblade space and blunt tangent point; indistinct anterior blade apophysis and a shallow apex at the base of blade that never extends beyond the Y+1 axis; moderately wide and triangular central part with blunt point; and space between tip of ray and central clear area forms a wide impregnated ring. Saprotrophic fungi in the biological control of phytopathogenic geohelminths].","authors":"Kinga Mazurkiewicz-Zapałowicz,&nbsp;Lidia Kołodziejczyk","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>The state of knowledge on the possible antagonism between soil saprotrophic fungi and phytopathogenic nematodes of the genera Meloidogyne, Heterodera, and Globodera is reviewed basing on the literature and our own research. Mycelial colonisation of various developmental stages of these geohelminths is the most common factor thought to reduce their populations in nature. The following parasitic fungi can be found on the cysts, eggs, as well as the larvae of the nematodes: Paecilomyces lilacinus, Verticillium chlamydosporium, Cylindrocarpon destructans, Pochonia chlamydosporia, Fusarium spp., and Penicillium spp. The fungi invade the nematodes, such as Heterodera, Globodera, or Meloidogyne, \"passively\" penetrating through the natural orifices of the cysts, eggs, and larvae of the host. Equally frequent, however, is a biochemical action of the fungi prior to colonisation, which is linked with production of mycotoxirls or hydrolytic enzymes. Such an active way of fungal penetration of various stages of the phytopathogenic nematodes has been observed in Pochonia chlamydosporia, Penicillium verrucosum var. cyclopium, P. frequentans, Sclerotinia rolfsii, Rhizoctonia solani, and Fusarium spp. Triacylglycerols (TAG), phenols, as well as trichothecene, T-2, have been found in the metabolites extracted from mycelia of these species. Predation by fungi is also a factor that may reduce a population of phytopathogenic nematodes. This form of antagonism is characteristic for nematicidal fungi of the genera Arthrobotrys and Dactylella. These fungi form shrinking rings and hooks in their mycelia by which the fungus entangles and paralyses a migrating form of nematode. Despite the fact that the antagonism between fungi and nematodes is a commonly occurring phenomenon observed in the soil, the nematicidal and nematotoxic properties of fungi have not a wide application in biological plant protection. One of the often forgotten and neglected diseases has been visceral leishmaniasis (VL or kala-azar). The disease is endemic to 62 countries, with India and Sudan accounting for the majority of the cases. It is typically fatal if left untreated. Each year about 500 000 new cases are reported worldwide, and 50 000 die as a result of the disease. Kala-azar is present in the Mediterranean Europe and 70% of cases are imported to non-endemic countries of European Union from that area. Immunocompromised status of patients, like HIV carriers are the principal prospective target for kala-azar. HIV/VL-coinfected patients have significantly higher relapse rates and decreased life expectancy. There is no formal system of reporting imported cases in Europe, except from Germany. In non-endemic countries, including Poland, there is usually the substantial delay between the onset of symptoms and the final diagnosis, with an average exceeding 3 months. This fact suggests that physicians are not familiar with leishmania infections. Despite progress in vaccine development, the only way to prevent the infection is avoiding sandfly bites. Mosquito nets, wearing appropriate clothes and repellents containing DEET (diethyl toluamide) can reduce number of bites and protect also from the other vector-borne diseases like malaria or dengue.
