Thus, the present research has proposed to investigate one of these systems in order to determine a maximum radius along which the microstructure and hardness are homogeneous after performing a quenching heat treatment. Cylindrical samples with diameters equal to 12.7, 14.0, 15.0, 16.0, 16.5, 17.0, 18.0 and 19.0 mm of ABNT 1045 steel were produced with ratios of 20:1 between the length and radius. Afterwards, they were heated in a kiln to 845°C, where they remained between 30 minutes (smaller diameter) and 45 minutes (larger diameter), for complete austenitization. Thereafter, they were rapidly cooled in water to room temperature. With the samples already sectioned, the hardness values were measured and the microstructures along the radius were verified by metallography. The results indicated that for the samples of 12.7, 14.0 and 15.0 mm, the hardness measurements were the same in the center, in the middle of the radius and near the surface, characterizing martensitic microstructures that were corroborated by the metallographies. For the samples of 16.0, 16.5, 17.0, 18.0 and 19.0 mm, the results were not homogeneous along the radius. In this way, it has been found that the maximum diameter at which ABNT 1045 steel cylindrical bars behave as lumped thermal systems is 15.0 mm.","PeriodicalId":23734,"journal":{"name":"World Academy of Science, Engineering and Technology, International Journal of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering","volume":"122 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79061312","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The manufacturing process involved a combination of extrusion and compression molding techniques. The mechanical behavior of Kevlar fiber reinforced HDPE with and without palm wood filler additions are compared. The effect of the weight fraction of the added palm wood micro-fillers is also determined. The Young modulus was found to increase as the weight fraction of organic micro-particles increased. However, the flexural strength decreased with increasing weight fraction of added micro-fillers. The interfacial interactions between the components were investigated using scanning electron microscopy. The influence of the size, random alignment and distribution of the natural micro-particles was evaluated. Ballistic impact and dynamic shock loading tests were performed to determine the optimum proportion of Kevlar short fibers and organic micro-fillers needed to improve impact strength of the HDPE. These results indicate a positive hybridization by deposition of organic micro-fillers on the surface of short Kevlar fibers used in reinforcing the thermoplastic matrix leading to enhancement of the mechanical strength and dynamic impact behavior of these materials. Therefore, these hybrid bio-composites can be promising materials for different applications against high velocity impacts.","PeriodicalId":23734,"journal":{"name":"World Academy of Science, Engineering and Technology, International Journal of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering","volume":"77 1","pages":"359-369"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90507591","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The influence of the SiC on the microstructure, mechanical properties and wear behavior of the composites were investigated. Microstructure analysis shows that the microstructures of as-cast Zn-Al alloys are refined by the addition of SiC. However, with the increase of SiC content, a number of shrinkage porosity occur. The hardness of the composites increases with the increase content of SiC. The tensile strength of the composites declines significantly with the increase content of SiC. The most effective strengthening achieves in Zn-40Al/0.5wt.% SiC, with a maximum increment of 20% in tensile strength compared to non-SiC addition alloy. The overall results reveal that the composites possess similar friction coefficients but the abrasion loss is reduced to less than a tenth after adding 0.5% SiC.","PeriodicalId":23734,"journal":{"name":"World Academy of Science, Engineering and Technology, International Journal of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering","volume":"13 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75231993","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
