In order to protect orchards from frost, temperature sensor networks have gained popularity to judge when and where to turn on wind generators and sprinklers. Currently these sensor networks only give growers a real-time alert, however such sensor networks would be more effective if they were integrated in a computation loop that uses past and current temperature data for predicting every overnight transition of orchard air temperature. Although a couple of algorithms using artificial neural network and empirically-formulated polynomials are available to the public, they need to be parallelized for useful on-the-fly prediction. To utilize a cluster of multi-core computing nodes (available through cloud services), we are developing MASS, a library for multi-agent spatial simulation, and parallelizing temperature prediction programs with MASS. This paper demonstrates the MASS library's suitability to parallelization of temperature prediction programs for on-the-fly sensor-data analysis by (1) porting the programs to MASS, (2) running them in a multi-core system, (3) feeding real-time sensor data to them, and (4) measuring their analyzing performance.","PeriodicalId":236844,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2011 IEEE Pacific Rim Conference on Communications, Computers and Signal Processing","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128948730","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we propose modifications to the basic TCP congestion control algorithm so that its performance is enhanced in wireless networks. In particular, our algorithm refines the multiplicative decrease algorithm of TCP NewReno. We are using some statistical counters to track the frequencies of the occurrences of timeouts and 3-dupacks. Different ratios of these counter values are then used to differentiate a congestion event from a non-congestion event. We are also tracking the time difference between two consecutive timeouts to figure out whether timeouts are caused by network congestion or random bit errors. We tested our proposed algorithm using the Network Simulator version 2 (ns-2) and found that it shows better performance than any other TCP variants in the wireless networks. Moreover, our algorithm is end-to-end in nature and modifies only TCP sender's algorithm.","PeriodicalId":236844,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2011 IEEE Pacific Rim Conference on Communications, Computers and Signal Processing","volume":"43 5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130694090","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At the lowest level, the wide variety of architectures and platforms results in a widening spectrum of instruction sets and assembly languages. Slightly above this level, C-based systems targeting multiple architectures and platforms are riddled with compiler directives to accommodate the demands of configurable systems. This paper proposes a generalized and extensible framework for the purpose of program navigation and analysis, leveraging an intermediate representation of source code to separate low-level domain detail from tool support. A prototype of this framework is provided with two case studies evaluating its efficacy within multiple domains. This study demonstrates the feasibility of an extensible framework as a common core for low-level program comprehension tools.","PeriodicalId":236844,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2011 IEEE Pacific Rim Conference on Communications, Computers and Signal Processing","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120891246","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several inter-layer prediction mechanisms are introduced to improve coding efficiency of the proposed HEVC-based SVC. The proposed inter-layer predictions are developed on single-loop and multi-loop decoding structures. We found that the proposed SVC is able to decrease average bitrates of enhancement layers by about 10.2% for the all-intra case, and 7.4% for the random access case, compared with single layer coding with no inter-layer prediction in multi-loop decoding. In addition, the single-loop decoding with the proposed inter-layer predictions achieves coding gains of 10.2% for the all-intra case, and 2.6% for the random access case.","PeriodicalId":236844,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2011 IEEE Pacific Rim Conference on Communications, Computers and Signal Processing","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122698680","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many applications suffer from these problems. The underlying machine architecture and representation of floating point numbers play the major role in the level and value of errors in this type of calculations. A quantitative measure of a system error level is the machine epsilon. In the current representation of floating point numbers, the machine epsilon can be as small as 9.63E-35 in the 128 bit version of IEEE standard floating point representation system. In this work a novel solution that guarantees achieving the desired minimum error regardless of the machine architecture is presented. The proposed model can archive a machine epsilon of about 4.94E-324. A new representation model is given and a complete arithmetic system with basic operations is presented. The accuracy of the proposed method is verified by inverting a high order, Hilbert matrix, an ill-conditioned matrix that cannot be solved in the traditional floating point standard. Finally some comparisons are given.","PeriodicalId":236844,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2011 IEEE Pacific Rim Conference on Communications, Computers and Signal Processing","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132196823","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Different scheduling algorithms can be implemented to satisfy specific requirements. With respect to spectrum allocation, conventional algorithms often do not employ advanced forms of priority scheduling for the assignment of transmission channels, thus resulting in the inefficient utilization of wireless network resources. To improve the utilization in this situation, we investigate three control strategies: master-slave configuration, multi supervisor, and floating supervisor, which can coordinate specific spectrum allocation efficiently and exchange their priorities. The proposed strategies apply different algorithms in order to utilize transmit power for improving system error robustness, utilize data rate to increase transmission bandwidth and information throughput, and utilize frame size to control the amount of information transmitted per burst. The simulation results of these algorithms are compared against each other. It can be observed from our research results that structures that are more complex generally achieve higher efficiency at the cost of increased delay.","PeriodicalId":236844,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2011 IEEE Pacific Rim Conference on Communications, Computers and Signal Processing","volume":"43 6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134382026","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The BPL modem can attain speeds of up to 200 Mbps when used in the house. However, the BPL substantial data transmission rate varies depending on the power line wiring diagram and noise sources. In this paper, we propose a new simple estimation scheme named Branch Model Attenuation Estimation (BMAE) that can approximate the attenuation for all point-to-point connections including those in complex networking topologies. In addition, we verify its effectiveness on the basis of measurement results for the PLC House, which is a realistic house environment for experiments built by Panasonic. Furthermore, an approximation of the transmission rate is experimentally derived from the attenuation, and the relationship between a real power line wiring diagram and the PLC transmission rate is revealed. We demonstrate the usefulness of the modem relay network using the BMAE scheme.","PeriodicalId":236844,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2011 IEEE Pacific Rim Conference on Communications, Computers and Signal Processing","volume":"96 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133134729","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we focus on improving the character recognition accuracy in such videos using a combination of video and audio based text recognizers. We propose a two step assembly consisting of a video text recognizer (VTR) as the primary character recognizer and an audio text recognizer (ATR) for disambiguating, if needed, the output of the VTR. We propose techniques for (1) detecting ambiguity in the output of the VTR so that a combination with the ATR may be triggered only for ambiguous characters, (2) synchronizing the output of the two recognizers for enabling combination, and (3) combining the options generated by the two recognizers using measurement and rank based methods. We have implemented the system using an open source implementation of a character recognizer and a commercially available phonetic word-spotter. Through experiments conducted using video recorded in a classroom-like environment, we demonstrate the improvement in the character recognition accuracy that can be achieved using our approach.","PeriodicalId":236844,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2011 IEEE Pacific Rim Conference on Communications, Computers and Signal Processing","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130314239","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
