This paper presents a theoretical approach based on Cramer-Rao Lower Bound allowing the designer to choose a configuration (i.e. modality, placement) of sensors, compare different approaches and validate the efficiency of the estimation algorithm to be used in estimating the pose of a subject. An adapted Cramer-Rao bound expression has been derived, and its computational algorithm is presented. The optimization of the design of a human machine interface system based on arm, forearm and hand pose capture using magnetic sensors is then presented as an example.","PeriodicalId":236844,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2011 IEEE Pacific Rim Conference on Communications, Computers and Signal Processing","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116303377","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a result, the amount of energy consumed by WLANs is increasing. To reduce this power consumption, we have proposed a Radio-On-Demand (ROD) WLAN that reduces energy consumption in the operation of WLANs. In this study, we propose a centralized association management scheme for a ROD WLAN. In this scheme, a wireless LAN controller assigns the association between access points and stations, a process that saves power in accordance with network utilization. Using simulation studies, we show that the proposed scheme is effective in saving energy.","PeriodicalId":236844,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2011 IEEE Pacific Rim Conference on Communications, Computers and Signal Processing","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127713722","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is important for students to operate network devices repeatedly to learn network skills. However, in practical learning with real network devices, students need a number of network devices. For this reason, it is not easy for students to prepare environment to be able to practice freely at any time. Therefore, we have developed a learning system to learn IP network skills on just one PC. Unlike existing network simulators, this system does not require students to learn scripting language to make scenarios. This system enables students to practice network skills freely and virtually on just one PC. We have implemented this system by applying the virtual Linux environment User Mode Linux. This system consists of virtual routers, virtual hosts, and operating functions. In this research, this system is primarily intended to practice operation of routing on virtual routers. To evaluate, this system was experimented. The results indicated that this system had sufficient performance for introductory network courses for undergraduate students.","PeriodicalId":236844,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2011 IEEE Pacific Rim Conference on Communications, Computers and Signal Processing","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132271550","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Delay and packet loss strongly affects the quality of service of realtime communication services, though, so analyzing these performance metrics is essential. Such analysis is difficult, however, because of (1) the convolution of multiple arriving flows, which means we cannot use the memory-less property, and (2) the finite buffer size in routers. Therefore, we cannot obtain exact formulas for these metrics. In this paper, we propose an approximation analysis of nD/D/1/K. With the recent advancements of Software Defined Radio (SDR) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) with clocks having timers of 10 second precision, a method to three-dimensionally and continuously measure the Earth Atmosphere's refractive indices has been devised. The method is based upon the synchronous measurement of the time taken for a radio wave to travel from the source via the ionosphere to arrive at receivers place at known positions from the radio wave source. This method will allow us to measure small phase shifts between the receivers providing information on the propagation of the radio wave through the Earth's atmosphere, which is a function of the refractive indices within its multiple layers. Testing will help determine the full extent of the device's applicability. Although this device will measure locally, its placement at numerous locations could be used to help monitor the Earth's atmosphere over a large region and possibly globally, connected using current radio technology, enhancing our understanding of the magnitude and patterns of Earth's climate change.","PeriodicalId":236844,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2011 IEEE Pacific Rim Conference on Communications, Computers and Signal Processing","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114690509","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, we study the impact of the channel estimation error on the performance of the multilevel quadrature amplitude modulation (M-QAM) based regenerate-and-forward CD systems. In addition, we investigate the effect of user mobility on channel estimation. After a pilot symbol assisted modulation is proposed for CD systems, the analytical BER performance of the proposed CD system is derived and results are verified via simulations. Numerical results demonstrate that estimation error degrades the performance of CD systems. Furthermore, the inter-user channel estimation error has greater impact on the performance of CD systems than that of the user-to-base station channel. Moreover, the choice of pilot symbol insertion period is crucial and it trades effective data rate for BER performance.","PeriodicalId":236844,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2011 IEEE Pacific Rim Conference on Communications, Computers and Signal Processing","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114924375","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed method has a capacity of adopting the appropriate error concealment mode to recover the loss frame according to its reference frames similarity level. There are three modes in the method. For a high similarity level, the mode using temporal related frame copy (FC) to recover the lost frame is employed. When the similarity level is low, the spatially related frame is copied. Adapting to the medium similarity condition, both the similar MBs in temporal frames and the matching MBs in spatial frames are used to reconstruct the loss frame. And block matching principle is employed for filling empty blocks. Experimental results have shown that the proposed multi-view video error concealment method can effectively reconstruct the lost frames and has more attractive performance than previous algorithms.","PeriodicalId":236844,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2011 IEEE Pacific Rim Conference on Communications, Computers and Signal Processing","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129469038","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, memory compression algorithm is proposed to solve the internal memory increment problem while maintaining the coding performance of IBDI. The memory compression methods have successively reduced the reference frame memory while preserving the coding efficiency by dividing a reference frame into the fixed size processing units and using additional information of each unit. However, additional information of each processing unit also has to be stored in internal frame memory; the amount of additional information could be a limitation of the effectiveness of memory compression scheme. Therefore, to relax this limitation of previous method, we propose a selective merging-based reference frame memory compression algorithm, dramatically reducing the amount of additional information. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm provides much smaller overhead than that of the previous algorithm while keeping the coding efficiency of IBDI.","PeriodicalId":236844,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 2011 IEEE Pacific Rim Conference on Communications, Computers and Signal Processing","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127523338","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
