At the heart of this interaction are two opposed human impulses: we wish to acquire and retain wealth so that we can live in comfort yet, as participants in a society, we feel that all its members should receive life’s necessities and we agree to give up some of our wealth to discharge that social obligation. On one hand, we can establish public bodies to discharge that obligation and delegate citizens to oversee them, yet then be reluctant to fund them adequately or to call corrupt","PeriodicalId":236677,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal for the History of Engineering & Technology","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131653996","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Competition replaced cooperation after the War as both countries began to develop armoured frigates and build ironclad navies. This period of rapid development in naval technology saw major national efforts to develop effective armour plates and manufacture them to the quality and quality required. In Britain the ‘Special Committee on Iron’ was set up to lead research into this new field and identify the best materials and methods of manufacture. Over the period 1856 to 1863 the quality and thickness of plates improved and this article looks at the relative merits of hammered and rolled plates over this period and the eventual adoption of rolled plates in 1863.","PeriodicalId":236677,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal for the History of Engineering & Technology","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123567282","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The pipes date from approximately AD 80. One length of pipe contained a sleeve joint. The pipes were linked to a pump system using 3 D-printed connectors, and the hydraulic head loss along the pipe was measured. The pipe without a joint was used to determine a value for the wall roughness height, fitting the results to the Darcy-Weisbach equation. The wall roughness height obtained was assumed to apply to the pipe with the joint, and the additional head loss observed was then assumed to be due to the joint, allowing determination of a local loss coefficient. The pipes have a sinter encrustation, indicating that they had typically flowed partially full. Using this as an indication of water depth and deriving topographical information from the excavation report, the likely flow the pipes carried during their operational life was estimated. It was concluded that the pipe wall roughness coefficient ks was 0.9 mm, the joint local loss coefficient was 1.159, and that during operation the pipe probably carried around 17 litres/minute.","PeriodicalId":236677,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal for the History of Engineering & Technology","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125006596","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An upgrade proved inaccurate when the programmers were found to have ‘truncated’ rather than ‘rounded’ results of calculations – an elementary error. The author is most comfortable with technical detail. The political background to the missile’s development, adoption and modernisation is listed without further comment. The sheer volume of material means it is hard to get a clear overview of the missile’s development at first reading. The author seldom reveals the personalities behind each breakthrough. But these are minor blemishes in a remarkable account of the evolution of one highly successful, but fortunately unused weapon system. Despite its heavy technical content, there are clear signs of literary style in the writing. Overall, a fascinating book which documents a triumph of technology and engineering. History owes a debt to the author for taking such care to document the whole project. We can only hope that anyone bent on total world domination is unable to replicate these achievements!","PeriodicalId":236677,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal for the History of Engineering & Technology","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114945398","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
