The plant has a wide therapeutic application and is often referred to as the miracle plant by the traditional herbalist. Folk medicine relies heavily on its leaves and fruits. Hence, this research was aimed at qualitatively and quantitatively estimating the phytoconstituents inherent in the plant as well as to evaluate its antimicrobial potentials. Qualitative analysis of the methanol crude extracts was carried out to identify the presence of the classes of secondary metabolites: The results of the phytochemical screening revealed the presence of alkaloids, saponins, tannins, flavonoids, steroids and Glycosides. Similarly, the quantitative estimation of these phytoconstituents revealed the following percentage of the metabolite; alkaloids (112.35 mg/100g Atropine sulfate eqv), saponins (96.84 mg/100g Gravimetric), Tannins (159.65 mg/100g Tannic acid eqv), Flavanoids (125.47 mg/100g Quarcetine eqv) Glycosides (397.53 mg/100g), Steroids (34.52 mg/100g Cholestrol), Total phenolics (228.24 mg/100 Gallic acid eqv). The paper disc diffusion method was used to determine the antimicrobial activity of the Crude methanol extract of Datarium microcarpum using standard procedures (Bauer et al 1996). The results of antimicrobial efficacies revealed that the crude methanol extract of stem bark Detarium microcarpum was effective in inhibiting the growth of the following microorganisms; Protius, Bacillus subtilis staphylococaccus aureus, Enterobacta, Eschericia coli Shigelia dysenteriae, Salmonella typhi, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Aspergillus nigger, Aspergillus flavus, Candida albican and Rhezome. The methanol crude extract showed a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) from 1.0×104 to 4.0×104 . The study revealed that water retting is the best way to extract fibers, however the gummy materials bending fibres together must be weakened by boiling the fibres rich material prior to retting where the fibres were able to be extracted at 14th day of retting. The fibers were treated using NaOH for scouring while bleaching was carried out using H2O2. The treatment of fibers was conducted to get rid of fat, wax and other impurities as well as undesired colors bonded to fibers that could not be removed through water retting. The best scouring concentration of NaOH was found to be 17.5 % while the best bleaching concentration of H2O2 was found to be 2 %. More so, FTIR was carried out for both treated and untreated fibers and it was shown that wax, fat and other impurities can be removed by fibres’ scouring and bleaching. This was further confirmed by the use of Soxhlet to extract ethanol-benzene extract from both treated and untreated fibres, where untreated fibres showed a considerable weight loss while the treated fibers did not show any weight loss. Thereafter, mercerization was carried out and it was found out that the best mercerization concentration of NaOH is 15%. Furthermore, the quantitative analysis of the banana pseudo-stem fibers revealed that the fibers have, ethanol-benzene extractives of 4.2 %, pectin content of 3.07%, Lignin content of 18%, cellulose content of 68.3% and ash content of 4.2 %. The fibers showed a water, oil and vapor absorption of 71%,59 % and 8% respectively. Also, the thermal analysis showed that the degradation temperature is 370 0C while the fibers started to display thermal instability at 290 0C. Moreover, SEM and XRD analysis showed that the treatment of fibres participated in removal of wax and oil as well as other gummy materials, which also is in line with FTIR results obtained. Revealing one's HIV-positive status to a family member or relative is crucial for adherence to effective antiretroviral therapy, which significantly enhances the survival and well-being of those living with HIV. To evaluate the hurdles faced by individuals with HIV at Kakomo HC IV in Kabale District regarding disclosure and to curtail new infections in this community, a descriptive crosssectional study was conducted. The study sampled individuals living with HIV at Kakomo HC IV randomly, utilizing a pretested questionnaire as the data collection instrument. The gathered data underwent coding, sorting, entry, and analysis through statistical software (SPSS), presented via tables and charts. Findings revealed that only 40 (50.6%) were adequately prepared before disclosing their status, while 30 (37.0%) neither prepared nor disclosed to anyone. 61 (63.5%) received education on the importance of disclosure during clinic visits, but 26 (46.4%) neither disclosed nor received such education. Barriers to disclosure primarily stemmed from anxiety about blame, stigma, fear of losing a partner, and violence among 18 (54.5%), 19 (52.8%), 30 (39.0%), and 2 (18.2%) individuals, respectively. Despite 62 (43.4%) intending to disclose to someone, 88 (98.9%) faced barriers to disclosing their status. Misconceptions in 51 (31.9%) communities and potential discrimination by families in the same proportion highlighted the challenges. Consequently, 123 (76.9%) still fear others spreading word of their HIV-positive status. Understanding disclosure motivations is crucial, requiring tailored strategies for decisionmaking based on the discloser's needs and their intended audience. Despite serving over 3 million individuals in Regional Referral Hospitals, a chronic scarcity of blood persists, impacting critical healthcare provisions, notably at Mulago, Uganda’s National Referral Hospital. This study conducted a meticulous assessment of the indications and influential factors shaping blood transfusion services at Kampala International University Teaching Hospital, Ishaka-Bushenyi, adopting a prospective descriptive cross-sectional design encompassing a 100% review of the target patient population receiving blood transfusions. Employing a pretested questionnaire as the data collection instrument, the gathered information underwent meticulous coding, sorting, entry, and analysis utilizing statistical software. Results were systematically presented through tables and charts. The findings revealed that a considerable proportion (42.3%) of transfused individuals fell within the age range of 20-39 years, with infants and young children (<5 years) comprising 22.4% of the recipients. Males accounted for 58.7% of the transfused population. Predominant indications for blood transfusions included anemia (30.4%), obstetric and gynecological conditions (23.4%), surgical operations (19.0%), infections (14.2%), and incidents involving road traffic accidents or assault (13.0%). The study identified the availability of a blood storage facility as a significant factor motivating the utilization of blood transfusion services, with an 87.4% availability rate reported. Notably, the demand for transfusions was notably high among females (56.1%) compared to males (43.9%), with anemia (53.3%) and blood group O (48.6%) constituting the majority of cases. Blood group distributions varied across different indications, with group O being predominant in most categories. Additionally, the Rh factor played a role, with Rh+ constituting 90.5% of cases and Rh- comprising 9.5%. Blood Group O had the highest occurrence of Rh+, while Blood Group A had the highest occurrence of Rh-. In summary, the study outlined several prominent factors influencing blood transfusion indications at KIUTH, notably anemia, obstetric and gynecological conditions such as postpartum hemorrhage and cesarean sections, surgical procedures (e.g., abdominal obstructions), infections (e.g., malaria), and incidents involving road traffic accidents or assault. These indicators are influenced by factors such as blood availability, age, gender, medical conditions, and blood type, with Blood Group O Rh+ being the most prevalent. Employing a quantitative descriptive research design, the study meticulously selected mothers seeking medical attention for their infants at HRRH, adhering to rigorous selection criteria. A sample size of 208 subjects participated, comprising lactating mothers with infants aged between 0-6 months, utilizing a self-administered structured questionnaire to gather comprehensive data on exclusive breastfeeding behaviors. The data collected underwent meticulous analysis utilizing Statistical Analysis Software (STATA) version 10. Results revealed that a majority of the participants were aged between 25-29 years (30.8%) and had attained secondary education (38.5%), with an employment status predominantly as employed individuals or peasants (38.5%). The study cohort primarily resided in urban areas. Among the 208 lactating mothers, a significant proportion (61.5%) initiated breastfeeding within the first hour after birth, with the mode of delivery significantly influencing this initiation, favoring normal deliveries. However, the practice of exclusive breastfeeding exhibited a decline over subsequent months. Assessment of knowledge demonstrated that over 80% of mothers possessed substantial knowledge regarding exclusive breastfeeding, with a small percentage (5%) exhibiting poor knowledge. In terms of attitude, 74.4% expressed comfort and acknowledged exclusive breastfeeding as superior to artificial feeding, yet 40.9% reported feelings of shyness while breastfeeding. Interestingly, a positive correlation between higher education levels and a favorable attitude toward exclusive breastfeeding was observed. Overall, the study revealed a generally commendable level of knowledge, attitude, and practice concerning exclusive breastfeeding among lactating mothers attending Hoima Regional Referral Hospital. This was a cross-sectional descriptive survey utilizing quantitative data from administered questionnaires and routine service data obtained from the mother’s HIV care card and the exposed infant clinical chart. Data analysis was performed using Epi Info version 7.2.4 for entry and Stata version 16 for analysis. Descriptive statistics characterized both infant and mother traits. Logistic regression was employed to determine the factors associated with HIV serostatus. Among the 102 mother–infant pairs recruited, most mothers were between 25–34 years old (53/102, 52.0%), married (67/102, 65.7%), had attained at least primary education (49/102, 48.1%), and were involved in farming for their livelihood (89/102, 87.3%). The HIV prevalence among the infants stood at 8.8%. In the bivariate analysis, factors such as place of delivery (OR = 4.6, 95% CI: 1.340-9.413, p = 0.003), normal delivery (OR = 4.7, 95% CI:0.682-5.522, p= <0.001), poor adherence to ART (OR=3.11, 95% CI: 0.983-8.344, p=0.026), and the mothers’ level of education (OR=6.2, 95% CI: 3.00-14.476, p= <0.001) were associated with HIV-positive outcomes in infants below two years old. This study underscores that 8.8% of children under 2 years attending Mityana General Hospital are HIV-infected due to exposure from their mothers. Factors contributing to this burden include maternal non-adherence to ART, delivery in facilities lacking PMTCT protocols, maternal education levels, and the absence of prophylaxis administration to exposed infants, collectively propagating HIV transmission among these infants. The prevalence was determined by comparing the actual ANC attendance (from mid-July 2022 to mid-August 2022) against the projected monthly ANC attendance (300). The resulting attendance rate of 66.67% was categorized as inadequate, falling below the globally recommended coverage of 80%. Demographic findings revealed that the majority (57.5%) were peasants, while 47.5% of their partners had primary education. Alarmingly, 62.5% lacked knowledge regarding the appropriate timing for seeking ANC. Key conclusions drawn were that the attendance rate for ANC was notably low, coupled with inadequate knowledge among pregnant women about ANC and a prevalence of low socioeconomic status. Recommendations included tailored education programs for expectant mothers on ANC services by healthcare personnel at Mutara Health Centre III, public awareness campaigns by the Mitooma district health officer emphasizing the benefits of ANC attendance, governmental strategies to improve the livelihoods of those served by the health center, and a proposed study to assess maternal mortality prevalence specifically at Mutara Health Centre III.
