In the paper, the comparison between two different multi-h CPM schemes is made for the land mobile satellite communication channel. The study is complemented with the use of post-detection diversity in the receiver (implemented by means of two Viterbi receivers) that allows an improved performance, in particular when the received signal is unshadowed. Results show that multi-h CPM can achieve good performances when using receiver diversity both in terms of bit error rate and occupied bandwidth. However, during shadowed time intervals it is necessary to use some form of error control coding, specially for data transmission.","PeriodicalId":236384,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Second Symposium on Communications and Vehicular Technology in the Benelux","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124159133","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the deterministic phase model (model I), phase is updated deterministically using several independent random scatterers for each multipath component. In the random phase model (model II), phase of each multipath updates with independent random increments. Statistical characteristics of phase increments of model I are studied, simulated and compared with model II. Major results of this investigation are: (i) phase increments of model I are normally distributed with non-zero mean; (ii) mean of phase increments of model I decreases with increasing excess delay, increases with increasing antenna separation, slightly increases with increasing the number of scatterers and is nearly independent of the profile number; (iii) standard deviation of phase increments of model I changes with position of portable and after a displacement of one wavelength is nearly independent of profile number, and slightly increases with the number of scatterers. Comparison of these two models from computational complexity is carried out. It is shown that with two scatterers of model I, both methods have the same performance, and with more scatterers the random phase increment model is more efficient than the deterministic phase increment model. The results of this investigation can be used in design and performance evaluation of indoor wireless communication systems.","PeriodicalId":236384,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Second Symposium on Communications and Vehicular Technology in the Benelux","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134600942","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The air interface is usually fixed and designed for the worst case. The paper proposes to dynamically select the air interface parameters from a set of predefined combinations known as transport modes. Modes are ordered according to their robustness towards channel errors. They correspond to the transmission of a variable net and/or gross bit rate leading to a possibly variable allocated resource. The proposed modes selection algorithm is based on the transmitter receiver distance separation. It results in a mode utilisation in concentric rings, a more robust mode being used at the cell border and a less robust mode at the cell center. The reasoning is that a mode should not be selected according to the channel quality experienced in the recent past due to the very rapid changing propagation and traffic load conditions particularly in a packet access system. The mode selection is performed with respect to the conditions that will be statistically encountered with a high probability, the statistics being gathered with respect to the mobile station -base station distance. The interworking of the algorithm with various power control strategies is studied. The adjustment of the rings' radii in order to achieve the best trade-off between the service quality, the cell capacity and the transmit power is addressed. Simulation results are finally presented.","PeriodicalId":236384,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Second Symposium on Communications and Vehicular Technology in the Benelux","volume":"84 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131883815","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

OFDM offers robustness against significant channel degradation by dispersion. For wireless LANs, the design of the transmitter power amplifier and the characteristics of the modulated signal are key factors deciding the coverage range performance and the product cost. The peak-envelope-power of the transmitter power amplifier is an important parameter in the design of small sized, low power wireless LAN devices. This paper describes an OFDM system with a data encoder/decoder that improves the peak-to-average power ratio of the transmitted signal. In this scheme, the data to be transmitted is converted into symbols for the individual subcarriers, such that the resultant of a pair of symmetrically positioned subcarriers is orthogonal to the resultant of another pair of subcarriers with the same center of symmetry. This conversion gives a reduced ratio between peak envelope-power and the mean (RMS) power, which reduces constraints on the power stage design. Further, the impact on the bit-error rate of clipping the signal in the transmitter before the output amplifier is discussed.","PeriodicalId":236384,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Second Symposium on Communications and Vehicular Technology in the Benelux","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129413265","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
