Sebald’s The Rings of Saturn a walk along the coast of East Anglia triggers numerous memories about catastrophic events, leading to a variety of stories about people living under conditions of transit, exile, homelessness, and precarious identity. It is no coincidence that all these people are connected with the coast, a paradigmatic motif for processes of erosion and extinction, exchange and amalgamation, border-crossing and hybridity. This article investigates the narrative construction of the coast as a place for transcultural memory and describes the different functions of this specific literary scene for structuring and making visible processes of identity negotiation in Sebald’s text. Furthermore, the article focuses on the coast’s potential to provoke reflection upon processes of imagination and multiperspectival writing. Gradinari","doi":"10.14361/zig-2020-110203","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.14361/zig-2020-110203","url":null,"abstract":"The sea, a special ecosystem with a special materiality, was long unable to become a medium for humankind’s cultural memories (at least under the prevailing confrontational national policies), and has long largely escaped political control and exploitation. Increasingly, however, Western literary and cinematic works have been linking the sea with memory, especially when themes of political transformation and the dissolution of borders are in the foreground. Current cultural interest in the sea can be traced to the transcultural phenomena that led to globalisation, expansion of communication channels, cross-border mobility, migration, refugeeism and the formation of the European Union. The sea offers a special space in which interdependencies and shifts, cultural de-differentiation and a fusion with the Other can be fostered, thus allowing for the creation of new genealogies and new paradigms in global (memory) politics. Not only does the sea make life possible – it also functions as a source and medium of new symbolic and epistemological frameworks.
