Mango (Mangifera indica L.) is an essential tree in the homegardens and is used for multiple purposes such as food, folk medicine, fuel, timber, and apiculture. The interaction between mango and weeds or crops has been evaluated in terms of allelopathy and the evidence of the allelopathy accumulated in the literature over two decades. The leaf extracts and leachate of mango inhibited the germination and growth of several other plants species. Soil collected from mango orchard shows growth inhibitory activity. Residues of mango leaves also suppressed the growth of other plant species. Phytotoxic substances such as coumaric, vanillic, caffeic, cinnamic, gallic and protocatechuic acids, and methyl gallate and quercetin‐3‐O‐α‐glucopyranosyl‐(1 → 2)‐β‐D‐glucopyranoside were identified in mango leaves. Those compounds may be released into the soil through the leaf leachate and the decomposition of plant residues and they can inhibit the germination and the growth of neighboring plants as allelopathic substances. Therefore, the allelopathy of mango is potentially useful for the weed management options in homegardens and other agriculture settings to reduce commercial herbicide dependency.","PeriodicalId":23536,"journal":{"name":"Weed Biology and Management","volume":"20 1","pages":"131-138"},"PeriodicalIF":1.4,"publicationDate":"2020-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1111/wbm.12212","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43324782","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A summer and winter pot study was conducted to evaluate the effect of different amounts of sorghum and wheat residue on the emergence and biomass of 12 summer and winter Australian weeds. The equivalent amount of sorghum residue to 0, 1, 2, 4 and 6 t/ha was used in the summer study and winter weed seeds were covered with wheat residue equivalent to the amount of 0, 1, 2, 4 and 8 t/ha in the winter study. The emergence and biomass of Amaranthus retroflexus and Echinochloa colona was not affected by sorghum residue treatment. For other summer weeds, the use of the 6 t/ha sorghum residue treatment resulted in 59–94% reductions in biomass compared to no-sorghum residue retention. Similarly, the application of 8 t/ha wheat residue in the winter study resulted in a reduced biomass of 15–100% compared to no-crop residue treatment. The results demonstrated the high potential of using crop residues in eco-friendly weed management strategies, such as harvest weed seed control tactics.","PeriodicalId":23536,"journal":{"name":"Weed Biology and Management","volume":"20 1","pages":"118-128"},"PeriodicalIF":1.4,"publicationDate":"2020-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1111/wbm.12208","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45465522","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hatcher","doi":"10.1111/wbm.12199","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1111/wbm.12199","url":null,"abstract":"Fresh root fragments of Rumex crispus and Rumex obtusifolius , which initially contain 65–70% moisture, progressively lose moisture when desiccated under conditions matching summer weather in southeast England. The likelihood of shoot emergence and the time it took in glasshouse conditions were both affected by desiccation, with R. crispus the most affected up to 48 hr and R. obtusifolius slower to emerge after 48 hr. These effects converged after longer desiccation periods, and R. crispus entirely failed to emerge after 120 hr. The dry weight of emerged shoots was not significantly different between the species until they were desiccated for 96 hr, after which R. obtusifolius dry weight was significantly reduced. In outdoor trials, desiccation for 24 or 48 hr had a lesser effect on emergence in either species when fragments were planted at the soil surface or at up to a depth of 10 cm, compared to deeper plantings, but emergence was significantly lower in plantings at 15 or 20 cm. Emergence delays were not significantly different between the species until they were planted at 15 or 20 cm, when R. obtusifolius was slower to emerge than R. crispus , an effect exacerbated by increasing desiccation. Similar interactions of increasing soil depth and desiccation were found in reductions in dry weight, number of tillers and leaf area, with R. obtusifolius generally, but not exclusively, better able to withstand more extreme trial conditions. Our findings suggest that control of these highly troublesome weeds can be assisted by appropriate agricultural practices, notably exposing cut fragments to drying conditions followed by deep burial.","PeriodicalId":23536,"journal":{"name":"Weed Biology and Management","volume":"20 1","pages":"47-60"},"PeriodicalIF":1.4,"publicationDate":"2020-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1111/wbm.12199","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41770144","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
