In dit onderzoek wordt het voorkomen van de ziekte beschreven met klemtoon op de predisponerende factoren. Aan Vlaamse en Nederlandse schapenhouders werd in een enquête gevraagd of predisponerende factoren al dan niet aanwezig zijn op hun bedrijf, alsook werd hun kennis van mastitis en de bijhorende factoren in kaart gebracht. De aanwezigheid van predisponerende factoren op de bedrijven varieerde sterk. Risicofactoren, zoals gebrekkige mestverwijdering (aanwezig op 90% van de bedrijven), overbevolking in de stallen (26%), gebrek aan ontworming (58%), een groot aandeel oudere ooien in de veestapel (30%) en melken zonder handschoenen (50%) waren prominent aanwezig. Andere factoren, zoals buiten lammeren (5%), een gebrek aan stalventilatie (15%), het niet-voederen van krachtvoer (5%) en de aanwezigheid van stress (4%) werden door de schapenhouders wel goed vermeden. Tot slot werd op basis van tien kennisvragen aan elke schapenhouder een score toegekend. De gemiddelde score bedroeg 4,1/10. Uit dit onderzoek blijkt dat er ruimte is voor verbetering van de kennis van schapenhouders wat betreft de factoren die mastitis kunnen veroorzaken bij de ooi.","PeriodicalId":23487,"journal":{"name":"Vlaams Diergeneeskundig Tijdschrift","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90743936","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A congenital nasal pyriform aperture stenosis with closure of both nasal cavities was diagnosed. The aperture was surgically opened through a midline approach, and a covered metallic stent (CMS) was inserted in each nasal cavity to prevent the newly constructed airway from obstructing. Seven weeks after implantation, the left nasal cavity was obstructed by granulation tissue. Further diagnostics revealed that the left stent had migrated caudally. The aperture had to be reopened and a new stent was placed. The right stent was removed endoscopically at that time, the left stent was removed six weeks after implantation. Four weeks after the removal of the left stent, the dog had normal airflow through both nares with very mild serous nasal discharge.","PeriodicalId":23487,"journal":{"name":"Vlaams Diergeneeskundig Tijdschrift","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75633973","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pardon","doi":"10.21825/vdt.85202","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.21825/vdt.85202","url":null,"abstract":"Neonatal calf diarrhea (NCD) is the leading health concern in calves during the first weeks of their lives. In this narrative review, the potential for pathogen-oriented approaches for NCD is discussed. The literature on NCD clearly shows substantial differences in spread and characteristics between the major NCD pathogens, making pathogen-oriented approaches possible, justifying the use of etiological diagnostics. For enterotoxic Escherichia coli, colostrum delivery and dam vaccination, biosecurity around calving and antimicrobial therapy are key. Both for bovine coronavirus (BCV) and bovine rotavirus (BRV), biosecurity and disinfection, dam vaccination in combination with adequate and prolonged colostrum delivery are the essentials. However, a different focus concerning biosecurity is necessary given the airborne spread of BCV and higher environmental persistence of BRV. For an effective Cryptosporidium spp. control, the use of disinfectants that kill oocysts is crucial. Evidence supporting the prophylactic use of halofuginone lactate to reduce shedding and diarrhea, is available, but in terms of biosecurity, attention should be placed on the proper use of this product. In case of a Salmonella enterica outbreak, antimicrobial use remains important, and biosecurity wise, attention should be paid to shedding of periparturient cows in the calving pen and administration of infected colostrum. Both for S. enterica and cryptosporidiosis, farm staff should be informed on how to protect themselves against these zoonotic infections. Nutritional factors play an additional role within NCD. Improper nutrition management can induce diarrhea or can further enhance infectious NCD through osmosis or dysbiosis. In conclusion, the suggested pathogen-oriented approaches can aid to economize labor and financial investments, limit the environmental impact of NCD control and prevention and valorize tailor-made farm advisory work.","PeriodicalId":23487,"journal":{"name":"Vlaams Diergeneeskundig Tijdschrift","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87366364","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, more people may prefer to keep pets (such as aquatic animals) during stressful events, like the COVID-19 pandemic. In this study, an international survey of aquarium keepers was conducted to assess their attitudes toward home aquariums during the COVID-19 pandemic. Over 80% of the respondents, irrespective of gender, age, employment status, number of owned aquariums, or aquarium maintenance experience, confirmed that aquariums have produced stress-relieving benefits during the COVID-19 pandemic. Approximately, one-quarter of home aquarium owners claimed to have bought more than 15 fish and 15 aquatic invertebrates since the beginning of the stay-at-home restrictions. The majority of the respondents confirmed that their aquarium(s) was/were properly maintained during these regulations, particularly compared to the years prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. To some extent, a shortage of supply of live foods affected the maintenance performance of home aquariums.","PeriodicalId":23487,"journal":{"name":"Vlaams Diergeneeskundig Tijdschrift","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73500719","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ethylene glycol intoxication has been described in the past. However, the evolution of ultrasound devices, and in particular the use of linear probes, allow a more precise evaluation of changes in the echostructure of the kidneys. In this study, the renal ultrasonographic findings were evaluated in six dogs and one cat with ethylene glycol intoxication; particularly, echogenicity changes within the medulla, and the radiographic features of the kidneys in two dogs are described. Severe cortical hyperechogenicity was present in all dogs and was associated with acoustic shadowing in one dog. Different forms of medullary echogenicity were identified with the medullary rim sign being the most common finding. In two dogs, abdominal radiographs showed a diffuse homogeneous increased opacity of both kidneys. However, none of these changes are pathognomonic for ethylene glycol poisoning. In the cat, cortical echogenicity was normal upon admission and evolved into mild hyperechogenicity. The cat did not present medullary rim sign but showed an association of severe hyperechoic outer medulla and moderate medullary band sign.","PeriodicalId":23487,"journal":{"name":"Vlaams Diergeneeskundig Tijdschrift","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74008458","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

De klassieke technieken voor visuele inspectie, palpatie en de bepaling van intraoperatieve tumormarges zijn weinig nauwkeurig. Fluorescentie-geleide chirurgie kan een belangrijke rol spelen in de oncologische chirurgie. Tumor-specifieke liganden, gekoppeld aan een fluorescente stof, kunnen tumorcellen op een accurate manier aankleuren door te binden aan hun doelwitproteïne, en daardoor de kans op volledige chirurgische verwijdering van de tumor verhogen. In deze literatuurstudie werd een vergelijking gemaakt tussen twee potentieel interes sante doelwitproteïnen voor gebruik bij fluorescentie-geleide oncologische chirurgie in de dierge neeskunde, zijnde cycline D1 en “epidermal growth factor receptor” (EGFR). Het voornaamste evaluatiecriterium is tumorspecificiteit, waarbij er hoge expressie is in het tumorweefsel en wei nig tot geen expressie in het omliggende, gezonde weefsel. Ook de bereikbaarheid van het pro teïne voor de ligand, waarbij expressie op de celmembraan de voorkeur geniet ten opzichte van intracellullaire expressie, is een evaluatiecriterium. Door zijn betere beschikbaarheid en betere specificiteit lijkt EGFR meer aangewezen voor fluorescentie-geleide oncologische chirurgie bij honden dan cycline D1. Door de grote diversiteit in eiwitexpressie tussen verschillende tumoren is het echter belangrijk om resultaten inzake toepasbaarheid niet te veralgemenen voor andere types tumoren. Hoewel studies en toepassingen uit de humane geneeskunde richtinggevend kun nen zijn voor toepassingen in de diergeneeskunde, mogen onderzoeksresultaten niet rechtstreeks vertaald worden naar andere species.","PeriodicalId":23487,"journal":{"name":"Vlaams Diergeneeskundig Tijdschrift","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77736167","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
