Although increasingly used in veterinary practice, there is a lack of computed tomography (CT) data on either the normal or abnormal appearance of these organs. In this prospective, descriptive and comparative study, CT images of the uterus and ovaries of 22 bitches with no clinical signs of reproductive organ disease were examined. CT was compared to ultrasonography and the level of agreement between both was analyzed. The results indicate that it is feasible to evaluate the entire uterus and ovaries using CT. In this study, a range of cervical, uterine horn and ovarian appearances are described and illustrated. Although native CT failed to detect uterine cystic lesions, other CT characteristics were linked to cystic endometrial hyperplasia, warranting ultrasonographic examination. In general, CT can be used to approximate ultrasonographic measurements.","PeriodicalId":23487,"journal":{"name":"Vlaams Diergeneeskundig Tijdschrift","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2021-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74920387","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Abdominal ultrasound was suggestive of the presence of gas within the small intestinal walls. Additional abdominal radiographs confirmed the ultrasonographic abnormalities, compatible with pneumatosis intestinalis. Explorative laparotomy revealed hemorrhagic lesions, thickened intestinal walls and serosal discoloration of the jejunum. Partial jejunectomy was performed and histopathology showed findings compatible with atypical bacterial enteritis. The dog recovered completely and did not show any clinical signs during a follow-up period of one year after surgery.","PeriodicalId":23487,"journal":{"name":"Vlaams Diergeneeskundig Tijdschrift","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2021-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77927377","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Full ne- cropsy with histopathology was performed. Gross examination revealed severe diffuse hemorr- hagic and emphysematous pneumonia with the presence of 6-10 cm-large nematodes. The nema- todes were found in the trachea, large bronchi, right heart and pulmonary arteries, and subsequently identified as Otostrongylus circumlitus. Histologic examination demonstrated severe eosinophilic to granulomatous bronchointerstitial pneumonia with intralesional nematodes. It was concluded that the seal died of severe verminous pneumonia. In this case report, the importance of lungworm infection, which is a common and critical disease in young seals, is highlighted.","PeriodicalId":23487,"journal":{"name":"Vlaams Diergeneeskundig Tijdschrift","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2021-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77846297","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The horse recovered completely from the clinical signs. Pathologies that cause asymmetrical forebrain signs in horses could be excluded. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a flow difference in the venous sinuses that was presumably caused by cerebral venous sinus thrombosis. The horse was treated with prednisolone, antibiotics, vitamin E and B1 and acetylsalicylic acid. He was represented one month after the initial clinical signs and was clinically and neurologically normal. The horse subsequently returned to his previous level of jumping.","PeriodicalId":23487,"journal":{"name":"Vlaams Diergeneeskundig Tijdschrift","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2021-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83106171","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Deze aandoening wordt verder onderverdeeld in lichte tot matige astma, beter bekend als “inflammatory airway disease” (IAD), en ernstige astma, beter bekend als “recurrent airway obstruction” (RAO). RAO veroorzaakt inflammatie en obstructie van de diepe luchtwegen, wat leidt tot chronische hoest, verhoogde ademhalingsinspanning in rust en inspanningsintolerantie, meestal bij paarden ouder dan zeven jaar. IAD daarentegen kan op elke leeftijd voorkomen en de klinische tekenen zijn vaak veel subtieler, namelijk verminderd presteren en occasioneel hoesten. Equine astma wordt voornamelijk getriggerd door een hoge concentratie aan stof en schimmelsporen in de stalomgeving of pollen tijdens de zomermaanden in het geval van “summer pasture associated” RAO (SPARAO). De gouden standaard om equine astma te diagnosticeren is het uitvoeren van een endoscopie, gevolgd door een broncho-alveolaire lavage (BAL). Het aanpassen van de omgeving is en blijft de belangrijkste behandelingsmethode, vaak in combinatie met het tijdelijk toedienen van corticosteroïden en bronchodilatatoren.","PeriodicalId":23487,"journal":{"name":"Vlaams Diergeneeskundig Tijdschrift","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2021-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85970798","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On radiographic examination, the blind-end of the rectum was determined to be >1 cm cranial from the anal dimple, classifying it as type III atresia ani. Atresia ani combined with a rectovaginal fistula is an uncommon congenital defect of the terminal rectum and anus that can occur in kittens. After supportive medical treatment for three days, the patient was strong enough for surgical correction. The distal rectal pouch was connected to the unperforated anus and the rectovaginal fistula was closed. The kitten recovered uneventfully and was able to defecate normally at 38 weeks follow-up. In this case report, the importance of early surgical correction to avoid potential life-threatening complications from this congenital abnormality is demonstrated.","PeriodicalId":23487,"journal":{"name":"Vlaams Diergeneeskundig Tijdschrift","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2021-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88052118","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In de middeleeuwen was de cavalerie belangrijk om de infanterie van de tegenstrever te verpletteren. Daar kwam verandering in toen de strijdende partijen op het slagveld vuurwapens gingen gebruiken, waartegen de paarden niet bestand waren. Rijpaarden waren nodig bij de cavalerie en de artillerie, trekpaarden bij de artillerie en de logistiek. De veldartillerie, heel belangrijk in een belegeringsoorlog, werd meer en meer vervangen door een rijdende artillerie, die beweeglijker was en de cavalerie beter kon volgen op het slagveld. In de oorlog werden paarden doorgaans beschouwd als transport- en gevechtsmachines waar niet naar omgekeken werd. Ondervoeding en slechte verzorging waren hun lot. De militaire verslaggeving is heel gedetailleerd, maar de paarden krijgen nauwelijks aandacht. Het oorlogsgeweld deed massa’s paarden sneuvelen, maar veel paarden kwijnden weg door onverzorgde drukletsels van slecht passend tuig, of ze gingen ten onder aan ziekten als schurft en kwade droes.","PeriodicalId":23487,"journal":{"name":"Vlaams Diergeneeskundig Tijdschrift","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2021-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82813668","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Naast kosten voor de eigenaar en mogelijke bijwerkingen voor het dier brengt dit het risico op de ontwikkeling van antibioticumresisentie bij dier en mens met zich mee. In 2019 zijn er nieuwe richtlijnen van de “International Society for Companion Animal Infectious Diseases” verschenen over de diagnose en behandeling van bacteriële urineweginfecties bij honden en katten. Het doel van dit artikel is om een overzicht te geven van de aangewezen behandeling (i. e. keuze van het antibioticum en duur van de therapie) bij de verschillende types bacteriële urine-weginfectie bij kleine huisdieren. Ook worden praktische tips meegegeven voor het definitief vaststellen van een urineweginfectie. Zo wordt in de eerste plaats zekerheid verkregen over de aanwezigheid van een bacteriële infectie als oorzaak van de aanwezige klachten en kan vervolgens ook een weloverwogen keuze worden gemaakt qua antibioticum, gebaseerd op het type urineweginfectie en het antibiogram. Ook de rol van niet-steroïdale ontstekingsremmers in de behandeling van lagere-urinewegklachten, in afwachting van het resultaat van een urinecultuur, wordt besproken. Tot slot is het belangrijk te beseffen dat niet elke positieve urinecultuur noodzakelijkerwijs een antibioticumtherapie inhoudt.","PeriodicalId":23487,"journal":{"name":"Vlaams Diergeneeskundig Tijdschrift","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2021-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91302986","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

During a six-month prospective cross-sectional study, 39 patients, which underwent cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), were recorded. This corresponds with an incidence of 1.8% of all hospitalized patients that underwent CPR during the same period. Of these cases, 32 were included in the statistics. Return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) was obtained in eleven patients (34.3%), but only one dog (3.1%) survived to discharge. In this study, an association between hemolymphatic disease as concomitant disease and not obtaining ROSC was shown. Subsequently, four cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training sessions were organized. The confidence of the participants was evaluated before and after these training sessions and showed a significant increase after the training session. With increased training of all personnel and students involved in CPR efforts, the aim of this study was to increase positive outcomes and to achieve a more standardized CPR protocol.","PeriodicalId":23487,"journal":{"name":"Vlaams Diergeneeskundig Tijdschrift","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2021-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78662837","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Radiography revealed a soft tissue opacity in the caudal coelomic cavity that ultrasonographically presented as a congested, invaginated tubular structure and was deemed to comprise the left oviduct. After repositioning the oviductal prolapse, coelioscopy confirmed that the invaginated structure consisted of the anterior part of the left oviduct and incorporated a part of the ipsilateral mesovarium and mesosalpinx. A transplastron osteotomy was carried out to perform unilateral salpingectomy and bilateral ovariectomy. A definitive diagnosis of an oviductal leiomyoma was made based on histopathological and immunohistochemical examination of the invaginated part of the oviduct. In the present case, the authors highlight that neoplastic disorders should be considered as a cause of oviductal invagination and prolapse in chelonians. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first report of the diagnosis and successful treatment of an oviductal leiomyoma in a Hermann’s tortoise.","PeriodicalId":23487,"journal":{"name":"Vlaams Diergeneeskundig Tijdschrift","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2021-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74113444","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
