De geschatte leeftijd van de betrokken dieren varieerde van minder dan een jaar tot meer dan drie jaar oud. In zeven van de tien gevallen waren laterale deviaties aanwezig op beide voorbenen. Omdat erfelijke factoren aan de basis kunnen liggen van deze afwijkingen, betekent hun voorkomen een mogelijke bedreiging voor een gezonde verdere ontwikkeling van de populatie. Daarom worden deze gevallen hier gerapporteerd en wordt in de discussie ingegaan op hun mogelijke impact op het dierenwelzijn en op beheersmaatregelen die aanbevolen worden om eventuele uitbreiding van die problematiek te voorkomen.","PeriodicalId":23487,"journal":{"name":"Vlaams Diergeneeskundig Tijdschrift","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83983632","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Het doel van deze studie was om meer informatie te verkrijgen over de invloed van HD op het al dan niet ontwikkelen van een ruptuur van de craniale kruisband. Tussen 2016 en 2020 werden op de dienst Orthopedie van de Faculteit Diergeneeskunde (UGent) te Merelbeke 465 honden aangeboden met een ruptuur van de craniale kruisband (12,36%). Hiervan vertoonde 17% concomitante HD. Bij de honden met HD trad de ruptuur van de craniale kruisband in de eerste knie gemiddeld op jongere leeftijd op dan bij honden met gezonde heupen. Daarnaast ontwikkelde zich vaker een bilaterale ruptuur van de craniale kruisband bij de honden met HD en liepen ze bij unilaterale heupklachten een groter risico op de ontwikkeling van een ruptuur aan de contralaterale knie. De resultaten benadrukken het belang om honden met HD mankvrij te houden, om zo een overbelasting van de knieën te voorkomen.","PeriodicalId":23487,"journal":{"name":"Vlaams Diergeneeskundig Tijdschrift","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89104842","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Clinical and blood examinations revealed no significant abnormalities, except for a considerably reduced serum copper measurement. This has been described in dogs and cattle as achromotrichiosis due to hypocupremia. Interference of intestinal copper absorption due to an increased lead concentration in the drinking water was assumed to be the cause. The dog’s haircoat became brown again after serving tap water as drinking water and adding a copper supplement.","PeriodicalId":23487,"journal":{"name":"Vlaams Diergeneeskundig Tijdschrift","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89363137","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

De Smet","doi":"10.21825/vdt.87488","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.21825/vdt.87488","url":null,"abstract":"Nadat Robert Koch in 1882 stevige bewijzen geleverd had voor de associatie van Mycobacterium tuberculosis met de gevreesde endemische tuberculose (tering, TBC) bij mensen, volgden al snel beschrijvingen van analoge infecties bij allerhande diersoorten. Van meet af aan was het duidelijk dat vooral runderen endemisch geïnfecteerd waren met pathogene mycobacteriën. Koch stelde in zijn eerste beschrijving zelfs dat de verwekker van de typische runder-TBC identisch was aan deze van de meest verspreide mensen-TBC: de longtering. Maar later toonde hij zelf aan dat deze stelling onjuist was: kalveren bleken ongevoelig voor M. tuberculosis, de verwekker van humane TBC. Het door Koch zelf geschapen misverstand bleef echter hardnekkig voortbestaan doordat twee erg gelijkende soorten Mycobacterium tuberculose verwekken bij mensen. Naast de aërogeen van mens tot mens overgedragen M. tuberculosis, verwekker van de typische longtuberculose, bleek immers ook Mycobacterium bovis een rol te spelen. Deze destijds bij runderen zeer algemene oorzaak van tuberculose kan vlot verschillende andere diersoorten infecteren, waaronder de mens. Alles samen genomen werd tot halverwege vorige eeuw besmet rundvee verantwoordelijk bevonden voor circa tien procent van de humane gevallen, wat toch een aanzienlijk aantal slachtoffers vertegenwoordigt. Een grootscheepse en langdurige campagne werd opgezet om runderen te identificeren en verplicht jaarlijks te laten controleren met de zeer betrouwbare tuberculinetest, gebaseerd op een allergische reactie. Tegen vergoeding werden positief bevonden dieren geëlimineerd. Behalve tijdens en kort na WO II namen de percentages positieven gestadig af, zodat bij de Belgische rundveestapel eind jaren zeventig van de vorige eeuw nagenoeg geen TBC meer vastgesteld werd. Sinds 2003 is het land officieel boviene tuberculose-vrij, wat niet belet dat er af toe nog een geval kan voorkomen. Aan het einde van dit artikel wordt kort beschreven hoe de aanpak van rundertuberculose aan de basis lag van de hele latere georganiseerde dierziektebestrijding. Achteraf gezien was het enigszins paradoxaal dat deze ziekte, verantwoordelijk voor slechts een minderheid van de humane infecties, vooral uitgeroeid werd uit vrees voor verspreiding van de ziekte bij mensen.","PeriodicalId":23487,"journal":{"name":"Vlaams Diergeneeskundig Tijdschrift","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75217887","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Treatment was implemented according to the ACVIM guidelines (Swann et al., 2019). As no response was seen eleven days later despite two immunosuppressive drugs, intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIG, 1 g/kg) were administered. Three days later, septic shock and diffuse intravascular coagulation (DIC) developed. Echocardiography revealed pericardial effusion with cardiac tamponade and thrombus in the right atrium. Fluid analysis confirmed septic pericarditis. A pericardial drain was placed following immediate reoccurrence of the pericardial effusion. Despite a stable hematocrit for several days following IVIG administration, a decrease in hematocrit was subsequently noted and splenectomy was performed. In total, six blood transfusions were given. Two years after presentation and intensive follow-up, immunosuppressive therapy was tapered, and the dog had excellent quality of life.","PeriodicalId":23487,"journal":{"name":"Vlaams Diergeneeskundig Tijdschrift","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78216790","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The owners’ perception and quality of life are essential, as any negative impact could lead to cessation of medical care or decision of euthanasia. The present survey aimed at collecting the perception of Flemish and Dutch owners of dogs affected by Cushing’s syndrome on medical, practical, financial and emotional aspects. In total, the questionnaires of 218 respondents were available for analysis, highlighting owners’ expectations, quality of life, understanding of the disease and encountered difficulties, and identifying weak and strong points regarding ownerveterinary interactions, together with providing several demographic data related to canine Cushing’s syndrome in Flanders and the Netherlands.","PeriodicalId":23487,"journal":{"name":"Vlaams Diergeneeskundig Tijdschrift","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-04-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73619045","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Both technical and patient-related confounding factors are known to influence the reliability and reproducibility of elastographic methods. Therefore, the study was designed to assess liver stiffness in a diverse population of client-owned healthy dogs, evaluate the effect of patient characteristics on the elastography measurements and to assess intraobserver reliability. A total of forty dogs underwent two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D SWE) twice, performed by the same operator, one to six days apart. The average, median and maximum 2D SWE velocities for the linear probe were 2.50 +/- 0.067 m/s; 2.46 +/- 0.067 m/s; 3.58 +/- 0.13 m/s, respectively, and for the convex probe 0.99 +/- 0.11 m/s; 0.98 +/- 0.12 m/s and 1.34 +/- 0.21 m/s, respectively. No statistically significant effect (P> 0.05) on the 2D SWVs was seen of the dog-related characteristics sex, age, body weight and body condition score. The intraobserver agreement of 2D SWE was moderate with the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) for the average, median and maximum 2D SWE being 0.69; 0.71 and 0.74, respectively. The moderate ICC and discrepant results obtained with different probes mandates standardization of patient-related and technical factors to overcome excessive variability in measurements in order to implement this technique in clinical practice.","PeriodicalId":23487,"journal":{"name":"Vlaams Diergeneeskundig Tijdschrift","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-04-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87892848","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The traditional treatment approach is the removal of the entire tumor, typically with 2 to 3 cm lateral margins and one deep facial plane. However, due to several factors, including anatomic location, condition of the patient, and potential involvement of vital tissues, it is not always feasible to take adequate lateral or deep margins, which increases the risk of local tumor recurrence. In cases where the traditional approach cannot be used, the use of tigilanol tiglate (Stelfonta®) as local therapy may offer a potential alternative treatment. Tigilanol tiglate has recently been registered as an intratumoral medicine for non-resectable, non-metastatic mast cell tumors. The aim of this narrative review is to provide a practical overview on the use of tigilanol tiglate in canine mast cell tumors. According to the available literature, tigilanol tiglate is a valuable alternative approach when surgical excision with complete margins is not feasible or desirable. Its application is described as easy-to-administer, and therefore this therapy can be applied by general practitioners as well as in specialized veterinary practices.","PeriodicalId":23487,"journal":{"name":"Vlaams Diergeneeskundig Tijdschrift","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-04-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84463324","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
