A set of mental strategies called \"heuristics\" – logical shortcuts that we use to make decisions under uncertainty – has become the subject of a growing number of studies. However, the process of heuristic reasoning about uncertain geospatial data remains relatively under-researched. With this study, we explored the relation between heuristics-driven decision-making and the visualization of geospatial data in states of uncertainty, with a specific focus on the visualization of borders, here termed \"borderization\". Therefore, we tested a set of cartographic techniques to visualize the boundaries of two types of natural hazards across a series of maps through a user survey. Respondents were asked to assess the safety and desirability of several housing locations potentially affected by air pollution or avalanches. Maps in the survey varied by \"borderization\" method, background color and type of information about uncertain data (e.g., extrinsic vs. intrinsic). {"title":"Across Edges: Art to Cartography; One Landscape to the Next","authors":"D. Maps have the empowering effect of placing the “world at your fingertips,” compressing portions of it into a more “knowable” form. I find that some places have this map-like character even in real life—natural environments that are sliced by sharp, unexpected edges and contrasts into more accessible and digestible fragments. Over the years I have explored creating maps that heighten these places’ compressed quality but also preserve their immersive aspect.This search led me first to the field of landscape architecture, and then into two dimensions after I realized that creating these idealized places out in real world was mostly a fantasy. I began piecing together travel photographs into abstract photomontages, later reinterpreted in oil paints, that sharpen natural edges and contrasts to depict imaginary places. I then transitioned to watercolors, and toward depicting places not quite as imaginary, using the same fractured style to combine travel-inspired landscapes with bird’s-eye views.Finding the task of painting the individual fragments less engaging than the process of shaping them into compositions, I came to think of these works as maps in terms of both theory and process—in emphasizing the spatial relationships between scenes rather than the individual scenes themselves. Safety of navigation is essential for the global economy as maritime trade accounts for more than 80% of international trade. Carrying goods by ship is economically and environmentally efficient, however, a maritime accident can cause harm to the environment and local economies. To ensure safe passage, mariners tend to use already familiar routes as a best practice; most groundings occur when a vessel travels in unfamiliar territories or suddenly changes its route, e.g., due to extreme weather. In highly trafficked areas, the highest risk for ships is that of collision with other vessels in the area. In these situations, a network of previously traversed routes could help mariners make informed decisions for finding safe alternative routes to the destination, whereas a system that can predict the routes of nearby vessels would ease the burden for the mariner and alleviate the risk of collision. The goal of this project is to utilize Automatic Identification System data to create a network of “roads” to promote a route planning and prediction system for ships that makes finding optimal routes easier and allows mariners on the bridge and Autonomous Surface Vehicles to predict movement of ships to avoid collisions. As a result of the Perczel Project outlined by Mátyás Márton in 2007 at the Department of Cartography and Geoinformatics of Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), the complete digital restoration and then reconstruction of the 127.5 cm diameter manuscript globe was completed in 2019. The final cartographic completion of the ongoing task at the department by 2013 – led by Mátyás Márton, the project manager, who carried out this work with the help of Judit Paksi –, which included the work of many lecturers and students, aimed at saving the globe.Using this augmented digital processing, it was also possible to create three artistic copies of Perczel’s globe, which was originally made in 1862. This unique work of art, which has suffered irreparable damage due to the ordeals of the 20th century, is of great cultural value and also very important for our cartographic heritage, has been reborn.Following the digital reconstruction, there was a good opportunity to revive another related project. The website, “The interactive gazetteer of Perczel’s globe”, which was born as a result of the work of Zsuzsanna Ungvári and Tibor Tokai earlier, was also created with a new, expanded content. In this paper we combined layers created from several terrain rendering techniques, namely a shaded relief rendered in the free and open-source 3D computer graphics software Blender, a hillshade created in the free and opensource Geographic Information System (GIS) software QGIS, a hypsometric coloured Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and a draped digital orthophoto. Following a recent trend in the cartographic community towards using Blender, we tried to improve the standard relief visualization in common GIS software by blending it with a shaded relief rendered in Blender. Using different QGIS blending modes and opacity values we achieved different graphic visualizations. To compare and evaluate the suitability of different rendering techniques we chose national park Risnjak located in Croatia because of its specific and diverse terrain landforms. After comparing different input layers and parameter sets, we selected the blending combination which is best suited for visualizing terrain characteristics of all Croatian national parks. Landslides are geological phenomena that are spread on Bulgarian territory mainly along the northern Black Sea coast and on the right banks of the Danube in the western part of the country. Mitigation of the negative effects of these destructive geological phenomena is the compilation of inventory maps of their distribution and registers with the main characteristics of the individual landslides. Conventional methods for making such maps are time-consuming and resource-intensive. Modern satellite, air and ground-based remote sensing technologies facilitate the production of landslide maps, reducing the time and resources required to compile and systematically update them. In this paper, we demonstrate the applicability of Differential Sentinel-1A satellite SAR interferometry (DInSAR) to assess the movement activity and use the information for further updating the national landslide inventories in Bulgaria. We perform several analyses based on multi-temporal InSAR techniques of Sentinel-1A data over selected areas prone to landslides. Spatiotemporal distribution of the epidemic data plays an important role in its understanding and prediction. In order to understand the transmission patterns of infectious diseases in a more intuitive way, many works applied various visualizations to show the epidemic datasets. However, most of them focus on visualizing the epidemic information at the overall level such as the confirmed counts each country, while spending less effort on powering user to effectively understand and reason the very large and complex epidemic datasets through flexible interactions. In this paper, the authors proposed a novel map-based dashboard for visualizing and analyzing spatiotemporal clustering patterns and transmission chains of epidemic data. We used 102 confirmed cases officially reported by the Ministry of Health in Singapore as the test dataset. The Regional Topographic Geodatabase (DBTR) was officially defined in 2005 as the multi-scale (1:1,000 – 1:2,000 – 1:5,000 – 1:10,000) cartographic reference for urban and regional planning in Lombardy Region. The DBTR had been previously introduced at national level to take over traditional numerical topographic maps adopted for urban planning, with the aim to provide a base map to be implemented either at regional level (Regional Geoportal) and by local administrations. The DBTR is structured by following some national guidelines that define either the content and the topological structure, that makes simple its implementation in GIS environment. The construction of the entire DBTR has historically gone through different phases, with the consistent support of the regional subsidiary policy. But when the effects of the world economic crisis in 2008 became tangible in the budget of public administrations, the growth of the project faced an important break. In 2017 the administration of Lombardy Region has promoted and financed a new project finalized to the completion of the DBTR. A temporary association of mapping companies won the tender and completed the project by summer 2020, despite of the difficulties related to the COVID-19 pandemic. A team led by Politecnico di Milano was appointed for the quality assessment. Many U.S. cities have experienced rising crime rates in recent years. Crime has inherent geographic quality and tend to concentrate in certain places within the city. To prioritize public safety and crime prevention strategies, it is important to identify where crime is occurring and with what severity. Using spatial statistics including the average nearest neighbour index, Moran’s I, Getis-Ord Gi* statistic, and Anselin Cluster and Outlier Analysis, this study investigates robbery locations within the city of Detroit over 5-year period, 2016 to 2020 to identify hot spots, cold spots and spatial patterns across two different spatial scale – block group and census tracts. The study seeks to understand the effect of data aggregation on each spatial scale on the outcome of the analysis to determine the most optimum spatial scale to study robbery rates. The study concludes that, spatial analysis at small scale like block group level is most informative. In addition to and parallel to the SERVUS project, the requirements for a new, agile, urban cargo bicycle with electric drive are identified through a targeted, scientific application potential analysis in the project \"E-Cargo Bike - Accompanying Research\" described here. These findings are then implemented in the SERVUS project in an agile development and production process. Several prototypes are built in the process. The new e-cargo bicycles should be able to be used both privately and commercially. They will be presented to users for the first time at events (IAA 2021) and rated by them. In addition, the longer-term allocation of the bikes to selected users enables a cross-comparison with existing e-cargo bicycle models. Finally, the substitution potential of journeys in motorized individual transport is estimated and projected using the example of Munich. A key for gathering further information on the abilities of specific electric cargo bike types is tracking experiments with various sensor setups of which the first attempts are presented in this research. Additionally, and by enabling a certain spatial accuracy of gathered GNSS data, we are able to match selected maneuvers of these vehicle types to selected types of the Munich transportation infrastructure. Besides trajectory shapes of maneuvers, we are able to incorporate travel time and delay variations depending on investigation areas and times of the day at selected urban locations for every inspected maneuver (at for examples differing intersection geometries with and without traffic light signals).
