Through this importance, the study will shape a cultural calendar by applying local cultures from various ethnic groups in Malaysia. The study also assesses the usability of the cultural calendar in teaching the subject of Moral Education. A qualitative approach with the Design and Development Research (DDR) design was used in this study. The selection of study subjects was conducted through sampling, with the aim of involving 6 trainee teachers majoring in Moral Education who had undergone Teaching Practice. Interview protocol was used as research instrument to collect data. The data was analyzed by adapting three phases in the Design and Development Research (DDR) Model, with the first phase being Needs Analysis, the second phase being Design and Development, and the third phase being Evaluation. The results of the study showed that the respondents had a high awareness of the importance of applying local cultures in teaching and learning process. In terms of the design of the calendar, the findings showed that the majority of respondents wanted the calendar to focus on exposing the cultures of minority ethnic groups without neglecting the cultures of the other main ethnic groups in the country. The findings also showed that the cultural calendar produced was attractive, relevant. The study's conclusion demonstrated that the production of this cultural calendar has provided comprehensive training to teachers on how to practice culturally responsive pedagogy in Moral Education classes, resulting in a direct impact on students. As a result, students have become more confident and prouder of their identities, motivating themselves to learn more.","PeriodicalId":233488,"journal":{"name":"Muallim Journal of Social Science and Humanities","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131187222","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of binge-watching behavior among adolescents during the Covid-19 lockdown and to explore its association with perceived stress. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 239 adolescents aged between 15 and 19 years in a selected region using a self-administered online questionnaire. The results revealed that binge-watching behavior was prevalent among adolescents, with nearly 70% of the participants reporting that they had engaged in binge-watching during the lockdown period. The findings also showed a significant positive association between binge-watching behavior and perceived stress among the adolescents. Moreover, the study found that the duration of binge-watching, the frequency of binge-watching, and the types of programs watched during binge-watching were significantly associated with perceived stress. These findings highlight the need for appropriate interventions to address the negative impact of binge-watching on the mental health of adolescents during the Covid-19 lockdown.","PeriodicalId":233488,"journal":{"name":"Muallim Journal of Social Science and Humanities","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114700373","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

People want to live calm lifestyles by practising proper mindfulness. People who practise certain religions employ a variety of peaceful living techniques to keep the proper mindfulness.The major world religions—Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, and Hinduism—provided a variety of instructions on how to practise mindfulness appropriately depending on the times and circumstances. In order to improve interreligious understanding between Buddhists and Muslims, it is worthwhile to analyse and compare the concept of right mindfulness through the lenses of Buddhism and Islam. This study is qualitative and uses descriptive and comparative analysis based on primary and secondary sources. Through this study, it is highlighted that the right mindfulness can be developed through religious’ practices, (Sammasati of Buddhism and Tarkis Kamil of Islam). Although Buddhism and Islam are two different religions, there are theoretical commonalities that can be used for interreligious initiatives between Buddhists and Muslims. Therefore, the researchers believe that by identifying commonalities between ideas like right mindfulness, the study will open the door to interreligious understanding.","PeriodicalId":233488,"journal":{"name":"Muallim Journal of Social Science and Humanities","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122723511","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It was legally recognized in the world with its legal provisions. Muslims have also adopted children in contrast to Islamic guidelines and regulations suggesting alternatives. This research article examines the child-adopting practice among Muslim families in the Ampara district of Eastern Sri Lanka. This study was based on data analysis obtained through interviews with 50 such families and ten scholars and activists of this region. In the interview, certain aspects are covered and it takes about 15 minutes for each interview. The findings demonstrate that infertility and its consequence of social and psychological problems reflected in domestic violence are the prime contexts for child adoption. Furthermore, social and cultural patterns of this region have given female children more preference in child adaptation. This study provides awareness to concerned parties and decision-makers.","PeriodicalId":233488,"journal":{"name":"Muallim Journal of Social Science and Humanities","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129344694","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study uses the translation archeology method by D'hulst to obtain information about (i) translated literary works, (ii) parties involved, (iii) translation funding, (iv) method of translation and (v) function of translated literary works for the audience. The results show that the publication of Malay literary works into foreign languages only started in 2006. The publication of Malay Literature in foreign languages is divided into two categories – National Literature and Children's Literature. Within 25 years, 263 titles have been published in 12 foreign languages. The highest publication titles were translated from Malay into English, with 167 titles. There were 120 translators involved in this publication; 41 were native speakers (L1), while 79 were non-native speakers (L2). The most translated work by a Malaysian writer into foreign languages is A. Samad Said for the National Literature category, while Rahimidin Zahari's work is the most translated for Children's Literature. The publication of Malay literary works into foreign languages was funded by ten international publishers using a cost-sharing strategy that included Germany, Japan, and Taiwan. This study implies that the documentation using this archaeological translation method can provide a complete picture of Malaysia's history, development, and translation activity.","PeriodicalId":233488,"journal":{"name":"Muallim Journal of Social Science and Humanities","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127784556","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The researchers analysed the novel Anak dan Kemenakan [Children and Nephews], that was written by Marah Rusli. The main objectives were to find out what kind of anthropological knowledge it contains and whether it can be an anthropological source. It was detected that it gives a good impression of the Minangkabau kinship system. Furthermore, the novel also includes anthropological knowledge that describes part of the Minangkabau culture in West Sumatra, like the culture-specific terminology or the importance of discussing in order to achieve a consensus. The researchers concluded that the book Anak dan Kemenakan describes the cultural situation of West Sumatra at the beginning of the 20th century. Furthermore, Marah Rusli used the perspective of the upper class during that time.","PeriodicalId":233488,"journal":{"name":"Muallim Journal of Social Science and Humanities","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132810706","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The archaeological excavations at Bujang Valley, located near present day Merbok in Kedah, have revealed a wealth of relics and ruins, including Hindu icons, stone caskets, and tablets that may date back to more than 2,535 years ago. This is a proof that Tamil is rooted in Malaysia since very long time ago. Malaysian Indians are merely proud about the history but most of them are less bothered about issues revolving around Tamil Education. This is 21st century, but until now Tamil students from vernacular schools is facing various issues when he/she is showing interest to take Tamil as one of the major examination subjects in secondary school. Through a review of the literature, this paper seeks to understand how the study of history can enhance critical thinking, problem solving, and other cognitive skills. The paper begins by exploring the definition and importance of thinking skills, highlighting their role in education and daily life. It then discusses the various ways in which history education can foster the development of these skills, including through the analysis of primary sources, the construction of historical narratives, and the consideration of multiple perspectives. Additionally, the paper considers the potential challenges and limitations of using history as a means of improving thinking skills, including the risk of bias and the need for contextualization. It concludes by summarizing the key findings and suggesting directions for future research in this area.","PeriodicalId":233488,"journal":{"name":"Muallim Journal of Social Science and Humanities","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122860359","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aims at identifying the level of teacher support for student learning and differences in teacher support for student learning based on Gender among secondary school children in Sri Lanka. A survey research design was used for this study, and a questionnaire with a Likert scale was provided among secondary school children to collect data. Descriptive analysis such as mean, standard deviation and MANOVA was used for data analysis. In order to select 1350 secondary school children, a stratified random sampling technique was used. The results of the study revealed teacher support for student learning with a mean score of 4.325 and a standard deviation of 0.695, while the interpretation is high. The analysis of MANOVA revealed that significant gender-wise difference in teacher support for student learning as the teacher support for girls' children's learning is significantly higher than male children. The results of the study suggested that teachers can increase their educational support and teaching styles for boys, such as practical sessions. It was recommended that teachers can design their teaching–learning processes based on student-centred methods in line with the challenges of the 21st century, where students can interact with teachers and peers and enhance their soft, hard, generic and life skills. Teachers should create a digital environment where the teaching-learning process can be delivered.","PeriodicalId":233488,"journal":{"name":"Muallim Journal of Social Science and Humanities","volume":"280 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121045383","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We frame our discussion in the context of the country's secondary and higher secondary level educational institutions. The education policy in Bangladeshi schools and colleges is biased toward educational administration. As such, a top-down hierarchical administration has developed that has invariably tended to focus on educational administration and management, not on any educational leadership, let alone consider teachers' job satisfaction. Servant leadership theory has been used as the underpinning theoretical framework to establish the relationship between principal leadership and teachers' job satisfaction. This paper contributes to the literature by extending servant leadership theory concerning teachers' job satisfaction, particularly in contexts where Islam is predominant. Religious values, particularly, Islamic values in Bangladeshi society are pervasive in effect. So, in the existing top-down bureaucratic educational administration which is a collocation of power distance, principal’s religious values would steer the relationship of principal's servant leadership and teachers' job satisfaction to a positive end.","PeriodicalId":233488,"journal":{"name":"Muallim Journal of Social Science and Humanities","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129597814","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
